A shadow-effect generator (SEG) can produce a small electrical output by exploiting the contrast between lit and shaded areas of a gold film on a silicon wafer. A 2020 report on National University of Singapore research describes a laboratory demonstration—not a practical way to charge a phone or power household appliances.
How can a device generate electricity from a shadow?
The reported SEG is built from a thin gold film deposited on a silicon wafer. The researchers arranged multiple cells on a flexible, transparent polyethylene terephthalate film. As light falls unevenly across the gold-coated silicon, the illuminated and shaded regions develop different electrical properties.

The team attributes the effect to illumination-dependent contrasts in work function on the metal film over silicon. In the researchers’ explanation, light generates electrons in the silicon, and electrons can flow from the lit region toward the dark region. When that flow passes through an external circuit, it can deliver electrical power.
Swee Ching Tan, a member of the National University of Singapore team, described the basic construction as “only needs a piece of silicon substrate coated with a thin piece of [gold] metal.” This is a research device that uses a shadow as part of its operating conditions; it does not extract useful energy from darkness alone.

What did the 2020 experiment produce?
As reported by Chemistry World in 2020, the device produced 0.14 μW/cm² at 50% shadow under indoor conditions described as 0.001 sun illumination. That is a very small power density. The report also says the output varied with electrode position relative to the shadow edge and with the transparency of the metal film.
The same report described the SEG’s output as twice that of a commercial silicon solar cell in that particular indoor comparison. That does not establish that the SEG is generally better than solar cells: the result applies to the reported illumination and shadow conditions, not to ordinary outdoor operation or appliance-scale power.

Does shadow power make the device efficient?
No. Photovoltaic expert Anita Ho-Baillie of the University of Sydney characterized the reported output at 0.001 sun as a 0.14% power-conversion efficiency. Tan also acknowledged that the current device’s efficiency was low. The twofold comparison with a commercial cell should therefore be understood alongside its specific test conditions and the tiny absolute output.

A result that compares favorably with a conventional cell in a dim, partially shaded indoor test is not evidence of comparable usefulness in normal solar-power applications.

Could it charge a phone or power a room?
The report does not describe a phone-charging demonstration, an appliance being powered, or a field deployment. Tan mentioned mobile-phone charging as an aspiration, not as a capability the experiment had shown. At the reported indoor output, the device should not be treated as a consumer charger or a replacement for solar panels.
The report suggests possible future relevance in persistently shaded indoor locations and at solar farms, where shadows are present. Those are proposed directions, not established applications. Whether the concept could serve a practical load would depend on demonstrated output under real operating conditions, efficiency, and the amount of usable power available from a larger device.

What is known about its research status?
Chemistry World’s report cites Q. Zhang and colleagues’ 2020 paper in Energy & Environmental Science (DOI: 10.1039/d0ee00825g). The reported device is a research concept; the report provides no commercial product, product model, or evidence of consumer availability. Its claims about mechanism and performance should be read as the summary reported by Chemistry World, rather than as an independent assessment of the paper.
