Solo validation gives the operator direct control and the greatest operational burden; pools delegate validator operations; liquid staking adds a receipt token that may trade but does not guarantee immediate redemption of the underlying asset. The trust’s governing documents, asset, custodian, listing venue, and jurisdiction determine which options are viable.
How the three staking methods differ
| Method | Who operates validators | What the trust can access | Main risks to assess |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo validation | The trust or its designated operator runs validator operations using its own resources. | Protocol-defined exits and withdrawals, managed by the operator. | Key and infrastructure security, missed validator duties, penalties or slashing where applicable, protocol changes, and operational concentration. |
| Pooled staking | A pool or its node operators aggregate stake and generally manage validator operations. | Redemption through the pool, subject to its available liquidity and the protocol’s exit process. | Operator and contract dependencies, fees, validator concentration, redemption queues, custody arrangements, and whether the pool’s controls meet trust requirements. |
| Liquid staking | A pool or provider operates validators and issues a receipt token under its product structure. | The trust may sell the token on a market or use the provider’s redemption route; neither necessarily gives immediate access to the underlying asset at its expected redemption value. | Provider and smart-contract risk, market depth, token discounts or depegs, redemption terms, governance, custody, and any additional uses or encumbrances of the token. |
These are broad models, not standardized products. Terms such as “pool” and “liquid staking” do not by themselves specify who holds keys, who controls withdrawal credentials, how fees are charged, or how the trust recovers assets. Review the actual arrangement.

What each model means for trust operations
Solo validation: direct control, direct responsibility
Solo validation is the clearest fit when a trust’s operator can securely run validators and manage the full operational lifecycle. That includes protecting signing keys and withdrawal credentials, monitoring validator duties, responding to outages, and managing protocol exits. The trust should confirm who performs each task and how the arrangement handles failures, penalties, and protocol changes.

Direct validator control does not remove custody or governance questions. The trust still needs to establish who holds the assets, who can authorize transactions, and whether its documents and controls permit the proposed staking activity.

Pooled staking: delegated operations and added dependencies
A pool lets a trust participate without operating every validator itself. In exchange, the trust depends on the pool’s operators, contracts, fee schedule, validator selection, and withdrawal process. Assess how the pool allocates stake across operators, how changes are monitored, and whether the trust can obtain the records and controls its trustee, custodian, and governing documents require.
For Ethereum specifically, pooled users typically do not use the protocol withdrawal mechanism directly; pool contracts and node operators manage validators, and withdrawal credentials commonly point to pool contracts. Pool exits can depend on available liquidity and the consensus-layer exit queue. Ethereum.org describes these mechanics at Liquid & pooled staking and Staking withdrawals. Other proof-of-stake networks may work differently.

Liquid staking: transferable receipt, not guaranteed instant redemption
A liquid-staking provider issues a token representing a claim or redemption route defined by its product. The token may be transferable or tradable while the underlying asset remains staked. A market sale can provide an exit route, but market price can diverge from redemption value; the market may lack sufficient depth, and provider redemption can depend on liquidity or protocol exit queues.
Before treating a receipt token as a liquidity solution, establish exactly what legal or contractual claim it represents, how and when it can be redeemed, whether the trust may hold or transfer it, and whether it creates extra exposures through smart contracts, bridges, lending, or other uses. Ethereum.org’s explanation of liquid and pooled staking is specific to Ethereum and should not be assumed to describe another network or provider.

Apply the trust’s liquidity and custody requirements first
A trust’s redemption schedule can rule out an otherwise workable staking method. Map the timing and amount of expected redemptions against each method’s protocol exit process, provider redemption terms, and any secondary-market depth. Decide how much must remain unstaked and readily available under the trust’s written liquidity policy and applicable listing requirements.
For a narrow category of qualifying US exchange-listed trusts, IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-48 describes exchange liquidity standards under which a trust with less than 85 percent of its assets readily available daily must have and disclose written liquidity-risk policies. In this procedure’s context, an asset is not readily available if it is restricted from liquidation, sale, transfer, or assignment within one business day. This is not a universal threshold for every trust or jurisdiction. See the Internal Revenue Bulletin 2025-48.

Keep custody, key control, validator control, and ownership as separate diligence questions. A custodian may hold the trust’s assets while a pool or operator manages validator infrastructure or withdrawal credentials. Under the conditions of Revenue Procedure 2025-48, the IRS states: “For Federal income tax purposes, the trust retains ownership of the digital assets at all times, including while those assets are staked.” That statement applies within the procedure’s scope and conditions; it does not establish that every trust or staking product qualifies.

Revenue Procedure 2025-48 provides a conditional safe harbor for specified trusts under state law that meet its investment-trust and grantor-trust conditions, including qualifying existing trusts that satisfy the procedure. Among the conditions it describes are exchange listing, compliance with applicable SEC rules, SEC-reviewed staking disclosure, written liquidity-risk policies, holding only cash and a single permitted proof-of-stake digital asset, custodian control of relevant addresses, continued trust ownership, and staking designed to protect and conserve trust property. It also addresses liquidity reserves in specified circumstances. A trust must evaluate all applicable conditions; the procedure is not a general approval of staking or of a particular provider.

A practical selection process
- Confirm authority and scope. Identify the jurisdiction, trust classification, governing documents, listing venue, and whether those documents authorize the proposed asset and staking arrangement.
- Map the asset’s protocol rules. Establish the network’s validator activation, exit, withdrawal, reward, and penalty mechanics. Do not use Ethereum assumptions for another network.
- Trace control and custody. Document who holds the assets, controls signing keys and withdrawal credentials, operates validators, controls staking contracts, and can initiate exits or transfers.
- Model redemption under stress. Test whether obligations can be met if assets are queued for protocol exit, pool liquidity is constrained, a receipt token trades at a discount, or a provider is unavailable.
- Set reserves and reporting. Determine the unstaked reserve required by the trust’s liquidity policy and applicable listing rules, then define how rewards, fees, penalties, slashing, downtime, and provider failures are disclosed and allocated.
- Review dependencies and limits. For a pool, assess validator-set concentration and operator changes. For liquid staking, identify any smart-contract, bridge, rehypothecation, DeFi, or secondary-market exposure beyond protocol staking.
- Obtain trust-specific approval. Have the trustee, sponsor, custodian, and counsel review current provider terms and controls before implementation.
How to make the choice
Choose solo validation only when the trust can sustain direct operational responsibility and its controls support that model. Choose pooled staking when delegated validator operation is acceptable and the pool’s custody, operator, and redemption arrangements meet the trust’s requirements. Consider liquid staking only when the trust is permitted to hold the receipt token and can tolerate its redemption dependencies and potential market-price divergence. If none can meet redemption, custody, and governing-document requirements, staking may not be suitable for that trust.
