How 3D Spatial Interfaces Help Designers Inspect Website Layouts

Preview a website in visionOS Safari using the Mac simulator or Apple Vision Pro, and learn what spatial inspection can—and cannot—tell you about a layout.

You can preview a website in visionOS Safari and inspect it with Safari Web Inspector, either in the visionOS Simulator on a Mac or on Apple Vision Pro. A spatial view can help you assess scale, depth, placement and visual prominence, but it does not automatically validate responsive breakpoints or every browser behavior. The simulator is a practical first step; a headset is only needed to evaluate the page in actual headset use.

What a spatial preview can reveal

A conventional browser view presents a page inside a two-dimensional viewport. In visionOS, Safari windows sit within a spatial environment; visionOS also supports 3D volumes and immersive scenes. These presentation modes can make it easier to judge how a page or its elements feel in relation to surrounding space, including their apparent scale, depth, placement and prominence. Apple describes the platform and its presentation modes in its visionOS overview.

Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines point to distance, occlusion and shadow as cues that help people perceive depth. They also recommend keeping important content centered within the field of view. These are useful considerations when reviewing a spatial interface, not a replacement for checking whether a conventional website works at different viewport widths. See Apple’s spatial layout guidance.

For ordinary web content, there is no separate spatial rendering engine to target: WebKit authors Ada Rose Cannon, Jon Davis and Jen Simmons wrote, “For the most part, there’s nothing special you need to do for the spatial web. It’s truly Safari, with the same WebKit engine and its extensive support for web standards.” Their June 12, 2024 guide explains the preview and inspection workflows below.

Preview a website without a headset

For an initial spatial check, use the visionOS Simulator on a Mac. It lets you open the page in its visionOS Safari environment and connect Mac Safari Web Inspector. This route is useful for checking how a page appears in a simulated spatial setting without first obtaining Apple Vision Pro hardware.

  1. On your Mac, open the visionOS Simulator and start a simulated visionOS environment.
  2. Open Safari in the simulated environment and navigate to the website you want to review.
  3. In Safari on the Mac, use the Develop menu to select the simulator’s page and open Web Inspector. WebKit’s guide describes the simulator preview and inspection workflow; exact labels can vary with software versions.
  4. Review the page’s spatial appearance, then use Web Inspector to investigate implementation or browser issues visible in the preview.

Inspect a page in Apple Vision Pro

A simulator cannot reproduce the experience of viewing the page through an actual headset. For an in-headset evaluation, WebKit documents pairing Apple Vision Pro with Mac Safari Web Inspector:

  1. Open the target website in Safari on Apple Vision Pro.
  2. Enable Web Inspector in the headset’s settings.
  3. Pair the headset with your Mac.
  4. In Safari on the Mac, open the Develop menu and select the page running in visionOS Safari.
  5. Inspect or debug the page from the Mac. Changes made in Web Inspector appear in Safari on the headset.

WebKit’s setup guide was published June 12, 2024 and describes software from the visionOS 1.2/2 era. The workflow is documented there, but settings and menu labels may differ in later releases; check the current software if a step does not match your device.

What to assess—and what to test separately

Use the spatial view to assess composition rather than treating it as an all-purpose layout test. Note whether key content is easy to locate and comfortably visible, whether the overall scale feels appropriate, and how depth and placement affect visual hierarchy. For ideas about depth cues and positioning, refer to Apple’s spatial layout recommendations.

3Dconnexion SpaceMouse Pro Wireless BT
  • Six-Degrees-of-Freedom (6DoF) sensor
  • Rechargeable Li-poly battery with 1100 mAh
  • Wireless and USB-C connectivity
  • Bluetooth Low Energy
  • Spatial composition: scale, depth, placement, visual prominence and whether important information stays comfortably in view.
  • Responsive behavior: narrow and wide viewport layouts, breakpoints and reflow. Test these at the relevant viewport sizes in ordinary browsers.
  • Implementation and compatibility: DOM behavior, interactions and browser-specific issues. Use Web Inspector and appropriate browser testing; a spatial preview alone does not establish that these are correct across devices.

A spatial review can complement a responsive-testing routine: it answers questions about how a page presents in space, while conventional browser checks address viewport-specific behavior and implementation details.

Website preview is different from 3D design review

Spatial software can also be used to review 3D product designs, but that is a different task from inspecting a live website. For example, Onshape Vision describes inspecting full-scale product models and collaborating on design changes in Vision Pro. That is model review, not a Safari workflow for testing a website. WebKit’s documented path is to view a live page in Safari and use Web Inspector for browser inspection.

What spatial preview does not prove

A page appearing in a spatial environment does not show that a headset improves design outcomes, nor does the preview automatically analyze every layout state. A separate 2020 study by the authors of Scout reported that its layout-exploration system helped designers create more spatially diverse alternatives at similar quality to a baseline and supported early ideation. That finding concerns Scout, not headset-based website testing; see the CHI 2020 paper.

Apple’s April 9, 2024 business announcement describes company and partner uses of Apple Vision Pro, and gives a device display specification. Those details do not establish that spatial preview makes website design more effective; see the announcement.
