In common charge-trap designs, electrons held in an insulating layer alter a cell’s electrical behavior; the chip reads data by sensing that state. Layer count and bits per cell both affect storage density, but neither alone tells you how fast or durable a complete SSD will be.
How does 3D NAND work?
Planar NAND arranges memory cells side by side. Three-dimensional NAND adds vertical layers of cells, increasing the number that can fit within a chip’s footprint. “3D” refers to this stacked structure; it does not mean that data itself is stored in three dimensions.

One common way to make a 3D NAND stack is to build repeated oxide and nitride films, etch a deep channel hole through them, and form memory-cell structures along the channel. SK hynix describes a version using a polysilicon channel and charge stored in silicon nitride. Manufacturers have their own structures and names, so this is an example of a common approach, not a universal recipe. SK hynix’s overview of NAND’s evolution and Samsung Semiconductor’s explanation of 3D V-NAND describe the vertical architecture.

In a common charge-trap cell, electrons are held in an insulating nitride storage layer. Their presence changes the transistor’s behavior, including the threshold voltage at which it conducts. To read the cell, the memory system senses its electrical state and interprets it as data. Samsung’s historical description of V-NAND also identifies charge-trap cells connected through channel holes. Samsung’s 2015 announcement is a dated example, not a description of every current NAND design.

How one cell represents bits
A cell can store more than one bit by distinguishing among multiple electrical states. The conventional labels indicate the number of bits represented per cell:
| Cell type | Bits per cell | What the label means |
|---|---|---|
| SLC | 1 | Single-level cell |
| MLC | 2 | Multi-level cell |
| TLC | 3 | Triple-level cell |
| QLC | 4 | Quad-level cell |
More bits per cell mean more states must be distinguished. That increases density but makes sensing and reliability more demanding. Kingston’s Flash Memory Guide explains the use of multiple voltage levels to encode bits.

What is the difference between 3D NAND and regular NAND?
“Regular NAND” often means planar NAND, whose cells are arranged horizontally across the chip. 3D NAND stacks cells vertically, which can raise storage density without relying only on shrinking the footprint of each cell. The distinction is about physical arrangement.
Layer count and bits per cell are separate ways of increasing density: layers add cells vertically, while TLC or QLC allows each cell to represent more bits. A chip can use both approaches. Neither label, by itself, specifies the performance or endurance of an SSD built with that chip.

Why don’t more layers automatically make NAND better?
Adding layers can increase density, but building taller stacks and fitting tiers more closely introduces manufacturing complexity and concerns such as cell-to-cell interference. The behavior of real devices also depends on variation between layers and on how stored charge changes over time.
A 2018 study by University of Virginia and Carnegie Mellon University researchers identified layer-to-layer process variation, early retention loss, and retention interference in the 3D NAND chips they experimentally characterized. Those findings help explain why controllers and error-management techniques matter; they are results for the devices studied, not ratings for NAND products today. The paper’s abstract and publication details describe the work.

In a July 2026 article, SK hynix reported that its charge-trap isolation (CTI) work had been implemented in a production-scale 176-layer NAND device. Compared with the conventional structure described by the company, SK hynix reported more than 30% lower cell-to-cell interference, more than 45% improved charge retention, and the ability to reduce individual cell size by more than 10%. These are company-reported results for that CTI structure, not universal performance gains for 3D NAND. SK hynix’s July 22, 2026 article on CTI provides the context.
What is TLC vs QLC?
TLC stores three bits per cell; QLC stores four. QLC therefore offers higher cell-level density than TLC, while requiring the cell to distinguish more states. Sandisk describes the traditional tradeoff as higher density alongside performance and endurance considerations. The actual effect depends on the NAND and the SSD’s design; a QLC label does not provide a universal speed or endurance figure. Sandisk’s QLC overview discusses the distinction.
Best Value
- 3D NAND smart upgrade option for gaming
- Enhanced performance for seamless cutscenes
- Shock-resistant, vibration-resistant, and reduced noise interference
- International products have separate terms, are sold from abroad and may differ from local products, including fit, age ratings, and language of product, labeling or instructions.
When comparing TLC and QLC SSDs, use the specifications for the exact models and consider:
- Capacity and price per gigabyte.
- The manufacturer’s rated endurance and warranty.
- Sustained-write behavior for the workload you expect, rather than only a peak speed figure.
- Interface, form factor, and compatibility with your computer or other host.
- Whether the vendor discloses the NAND type and other relevant model details.
Does 3D NAND matter when buying an SSD?
It can help explain how an SSD achieves its capacity, but the phrase “3D NAND” alone is not a buying verdict. A NAND chip is only one part of an SSD: its controller, firmware, interface, caching, capacity, and product rating also influence how the drive behaves. A newer chip or a higher layer count is not automatically the better drive for a particular workload.
Check the exact model’s rated endurance, warranty, interface, sustained-write specifications, and compatibility. If you are choosing between TLC and QLC drives, weigh their price and capacity against the way you will use the drive; the cell type alone cannot establish which is better value or performance for you.
What the historical layer-count figures show—and what they don’t
In 2015, Samsung described a V-NAND chip with 48 layers, 256 gigabits of capacity, and more than 85.3 billion three-bit cells. Those figures illustrate an earlier generation of the technology; they are not current industry limits or specifications for today’s drives. Samsung’s announcement of that chip gives the date and details.
There is no single layer count, speed, endurance-cycle figure, or price that applies to all 3D NAND. For a meaningful number, look for a current source tied to a particular chip or SSD, with its test conditions and comparison made clear.
