Some models rotate a lens; others use several cameras pointed in different directions. To judge actual coverage, check the named model’s camera layout, recording behavior, image detail, parking setup, and installation.
How 360-degree dash cams create their view
The term describes a coverage approach, not one standard camera design. Two common approaches illustrate why the exact model matters.

A rotating lens
70mai describes its Omni as a rotating dash cam with 340 degrees of rotation and a lens field of view of 140 degrees. Those are specifications for the Omni, not a promise that one lens captures a full circle simultaneously. Several cameras in one system
CARMATE describes its d’Action 360 DC4000R as a three-camera system with front, rear, and all-around cameras. Its all-around camera is intended to record the sides and cabin as well. A separate example is Kenwood’s vehicle surround-view system: four cameras mounted at the front, rear, and side mirrors combine their images into a bird’s-eye view. A dash cam that records around a vehicle and a built-in parking-assist camera are related ideas, but they are not interchangeable systems or guarantees of the same coverage. What the 360-degree label does not promise
Continuous, simultaneous capture in every direction
A rotating camera’s range of motion and its lens’s field of view are different specifications. The 70mai Omni’s stated 340-degree rotation and 140-degree field of view do not establish that it records every direction at once. Readable license plates or equal detail in every direction
Wide coverage and fine detail are separate goals: a broad view spreads image detail over more of the scene. CARMATE says that enlarging part of its 360-degree footage to identify a plate reduces resolution compared with a traditional full-HD dash cam, and that plate identification is not guaranteed in every circumstance. If identifying forward-facing details is important, check whether a dedicated forward camera records separately from the around-view camera. Zero blind spots or a seamless stitched image
Combining camera views can leave blind areas and uneven detail. Kenwood’s manual says blind spots remain around the vehicle and warns that clarity may be lower at the borders where views are stitched together. It also cautions that displayed distances may differ from actual distances. These are warnings about Kenwood’s surround-view system, not specifications for every dash cam, but they show why a composite view should not be treated as a perfect representation of the scene. Monitoring while parked
Recording while driving and monitoring a parked car are separate features. CARMATE says parked-car surveillance for the product discussed on its drive-mode page requires a separate add-on. Check the exact model’s power requirements and accessories before assuming recording continues after the engine is off. CARMATE drive-mode information

A substitute for mirrors or looking around
Ford’s owner manual frames its surround-view camera as an aid, not a replacement for direct observation. It warns that objects close to bumper corners or underneath a bumper may not appear. How to compare coverage on a specific model
Use the product manual and installation instructions for the exact model and configuration. Compare these points rather than relying on “360-degree” in the product name:

- Camera arrangement: Is it one rotating lens, a panoramic lens, or a set of separate front, rear, side, or cabin cameras?
- What records at once: Find out which directions are visible simultaneously, whether the lens moves, and whether every channel records at the same time.
- Forward-facing detail: Check whether there is a dedicated forward camera in addition to an all-around view, and how the manufacturer describes the detail available from each.

- Parking mode and power: Check whether parked monitoring is included, requires a hardwire kit or another accessory, and what the manufacturer says about its operation after the engine is off. Requirements depend on the model. CARMATE drive-mode information
- Blind areas and stitching: Look for a coverage diagram, cautions about seams between camera views, and areas the manufacturer says may not be shown. Kenwood 360° Camera Operations Manual
- Mounting and obstructions: Check where each lens sits and whether the windshield, vehicle body, or an object inside the car could block it. Ford warns that a door left ajar can move a camera out of position and make the displayed image incorrect—a vehicle-specific example of why installation and camera position matter. Use the view as a record, not as the whole picture
Camera placement, lens direction, obstructions, and the selected recording mode determine what footage contains. Even a system designed to show more of the car’s surroundings can omit close areas or provide too little detail for identification. Ford’s manual advises using its surround-view system together with direct observation and mirrors; the same cautious approach makes sense when interpreting dash-cam footage.
