YouTube treats that incoming feed and the viewer-facing live broadcast as separate things, so one feed can support a continuous broadcast and, in some setups, a separate event. YouTube documents this use case, but does not promise that a stream can run indefinitely without interruption. The practical limits involve eligibility, concurrent streams, archiving, encoder and network reliability, and your recovery plan.
How a 24/7 YouTube livestream works
The encoder takes video and audio from a source—such as a file playlist, camera, or other input—and sends an encoded stream to YouTube’s ingest server. For an encoder setup, you enable live streaming, copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder, send a preview, then start the broadcast through Live Control Room. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the process.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a liveStream, which describes the incoming transmission, from a liveBroadcast, which is the public-facing video or event. Google’s example shows a continuous 24/7 broadcast and a separate interview broadcast sharing the same incoming stream; ending the interview does not require stopping the continuous feed. This is a model of how the API can be used, not a guarantee that every channel or encoder will stay connected. Google’s API guide to broadcasts and streams explains the distinction.
Can you livestream on YouTube 24 hours a day?
YouTube’s documentation recognizes continuous streaming as a use case, and the reviewed guidance does not establish a universal maximum duration for a live broadcast. That does not mean a single feed is guaranteed to remain online forever: encoder failures, connection problems, YouTube-side interruptions, or policy issues can end or disrupt it. Plan for monitoring and recovery rather than treating “24/7” as an uptime promise.

What happens after 12 hours?
The 12-hour threshold is about archiving, not a stated universal cap on a live broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If the replay matters, keep a local recording and verify that the file is being written and remains playable. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Eligibility and simultaneous-stream limits
- Channel eligibility: YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Current guidance also requires streamers to be at least 16. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance for current requirements.
- Concurrency: YouTube states a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply at the same time. These are simultaneous-stream limits, not duration limits. The same eligibility and getting-started guidance describes the limits.
Encoder settings and connection planning
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current table rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream. Also make sure the sustained upload capacity can support the selected bitrate with headroom for normal network variation. YouTube transcodes live video into multiple output formats for viewers. Choose an encoder that supports your source, desired resolution and frame rate, and YouTube ingest protocol. YouTube supports both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders; neither is universally required. A 24/7 setup also needs a plan for local recording and recovery if the primary encoder or connection fails.

Monitoring and recovery
Test the complete setup before relying on it. While live, use Live Control Room to watch stream health and real-time metrics such as concurrent viewers, duration, and chat rate. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and messages; if you use a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will work. YouTube’s streaming tips discuss testing and monitoring, while its live metrics guide describes the available measurements.
For API-based monitoring, LiveStreams health and status fields include states such as active, inactive, ready, and error. These help indicate whether YouTube is receiving data and whether a problem is reported; they do not by themselves guarantee that viewers can access every moment of a broadcast. Common problems and fixes
- You cannot start your first stream: Confirm live streaming is enabled, the channel meets current eligibility rules, and activation has had time to complete; YouTube says this can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube is not receiving the encoder feed: Check that the encoder has the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, that it is sending using a supported protocol and settings, and that the outgoing connection is stable. Inspect Live Control Room’s health messages.
- The stream drops and does not resume: Check the encoder, power, and network path; configure and test a backup or recovery method if continuous operation matters. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing backup-encoder failover, but does not prescribe one mandatory hardware configuration.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Keep and check a local recording if you need a complete copy.
- You have reached a stream limit: Check the channel-wide and per-key active-stream counts. YouTube’s stated limits are 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key.
Copyright, monetization, and content rules
A continuous stream still needs to comply with YouTube’s applicable policies and rights requirements. Do not assume that owning a copy of a song or video gives you permission to broadcast it. YouTube says live streams can be monetized for channels in the YouTube Partner Programme; this does not guarantee that a particular channel or stream qualifies, or that it will earn revenue. Review the applicable YouTube rules before scheduling content, and use material you have the rights to stream.

Choosing a way to keep a stream running
For a do-it-yourself setup, compare a software encoder with standalone hardware by source compatibility, supported formats and resolutions, protocol support, and whether you can test failover. Then weigh the ongoing work of maintaining the encoder, connection, monitoring, and recordings against a cloud service’s operating model and cost.
