There is no universal winner. Choose based on the renewal price and privacy eligibility for your exact domain extension, then factor in transfer requirements and how many domains you manage. Namecheap’s published transfer page lists specific prices; the Hover pricing information available here does not provide an exact .com quote, so a direct .com price verdict is not supported.
Compare the price for your exact extension
Registration, renewal and transfer are different charges. Compare the same TLD and term at both registrars, and use the renewal price—not just a first-year offer—to estimate the ongoing cost. Prices can change, and premium or tiered-price domains may cost more than standard registrations. Confirm the amount shown for your domain at checkout.

Namecheap says a mandatory $0.20 ICANN fee applies annually to each applicable registration, renewal or transfer; it is added at purchase for some domains. Check the checkout total to see whether it applies to your transaction. Hover’s pricing is annual and in USD, but without an exposed per-extension price here, its .com cost cannot be compared directly with Namecheap’s.
Privacy protection depends on the TLD
Both registrars advertise domain privacy, but neither statement means every extension qualifies. Hover says WHOIS privacy is free where supported. Namecheap marks eligible extensions as including free-for-life privacy, while noting that some extensions have registration restrictions. Before registering or transferring, check that the exact TLD is eligible and whether privacy is included for that domain.
Transfers: price, added time and timing
Hover says it charges for an additional year rather than a separate transfer fee; in most cases, that year is added to the domain’s existing expiration term. Transfer rules vary by extension. Hover estimates one to two weeks, while warning that the current registrar, extension and other factors affect timing.
Rank #2
Namecheap’s listed transfer and renewal prices are shown above, but transfer charges and whether time is added depend on the TLD and its rules. Some extensions have exceptions, including different handling for UK-family domains. Check the applicable extension rules before treating a transfer as a simple flat-fee move.
Protect your website and email during a transfer
A registrar transfer does not automatically move DNS hosting or switch nameservers to the new registrar. Namecheap says nameservers remain unchanged during a transfer. If your domain uses DNS hosted by the old registrar, that provider may delete the DNS zone after the transfer completes, which can interrupt a website or email.
- Record the current setup. Export or copy your DNS records, including website and mail records. Note which nameservers the domain currently uses.
- Identify who hosts DNS. If nameservers point to an independent DNS or hosting provider, confirm that the account and zone will remain available. If they point to the old registrar’s default DNS, arrange replacement DNS hosting and recreate the records before the old zone is removed.
- Complete urgent DNS changes first. Avoid starting a transfer while a nameserver change is pending. Namecheap advises making urgent nameserver changes before the transfer begins.
- Start the transfer and monitor services. Check that the domain resolves to the intended website and that email continues to work after the move. Transfer timing varies, so do not assume completion will be immediate.
Renewals and managing multiple domains
Hover says new registrations default to auto-renew and recommends keeping domains renewed. Its renewals information says most domains have a 34-day grace period before redemption, but the timing and rules vary by extension. Expiration can interrupt services associated with a domain; do not treat a grace period as an extension of the normal renewal deadline.
Hover lists account-size renewal discounts that start at 10 domains: $0.25 per domain per year for 10–24 domains, increasing to $5 per domain for accounts with 400 or more. These are vendor-listed discounts. Compare the discount with the base renewal price for your TLD and account, rather than assuming a lower final renewal cost than another registrar.

Which registrar fits your situation?
Choose Namecheap when
- You want to compare extension-specific published transfer and renewal prices, and the quote for your TLD works out better for your needs.
- Your domain is eligible for its included privacy protection and that coverage suits you.
- You are prepared to check DNS hosting and preserve records before moving a domain that currently relies on the old registrar’s DNS.
Choose Hover when
- Its checkout quote for your exact TLD and renewal term is competitive with your alternative.
- You manage at least 10 domains and its account-size renewal discount meaningfully reduces your actual renewal cost.
- Your extension supports Hover’s included WHOIS privacy and its transfer terms fit your plans.
For a single domain, compare the exact renewal quote and privacy eligibility first; the available figures do not establish that either registrar is always cheaper. For a portfolio, include Hover’s volume discount in the calculation, but compare the resulting cost—not just the discount—to the alternative. For any live site or email domain, make DNS continuity part of the decision, regardless of registrar.
