A detour redirects traffic around a closed road, ramp or connector. Before driving, check current official traffic information, then follow the temporary signs and markings on the road: construction layouts and schedules can change.
What a lane closure means for your drive
A lane closure takes one or more lanes out of normal use through a work area. The freeway may stay open, but you may have fewer through lanes and less room to maneuver. The exact arrangement depends on the project and can change over time, so use the temporary signs and lane markings rather than relying on what the road looked like on an earlier trip.

TxDOT advises drivers to slow down in work zones. Watch for changes in traffic control and avoid abrupt moves when a lane ends or traffic shifts. A closure may affect a ramp or connector as well as the freeway’s main lanes.

Ramp and connector closures
A closed ramp or connector removes a particular way to get between roads. You may still be able to travel on the freeway, but a familiar interchange movement may not be available. TxDOT’s White Oak I-10 project page has described long-term lane reductions and ramp or connector impacts near downtown, with estimated durations subject to change. Those estimates are not proof that a closure is in effect now.

Signed detours
A detour is a designated alternate route around a closed road or connection. Read the signs early and follow the posted route; do not assume a familiar interchange or street works as usual during construction. The North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP) updates include street-level detour information, illustrating why directions are specific to a location and date.
Traffic shifts and temporary layouts
Construction can shift lanes, ramps or frontage-road arrangements while work continues. TxDOT’s Houston 610 at 69 project overview describes Smart Work Zone technology and directs travelers to Houston TranStar for closure information. Treat signs and markings at the site as the immediate guide to the current layout.

Where to check Houston road closures today
Use a live official traffic source shortly before departure. TxDOT directs travelers to Houston TranStar for road-closure information; its 610 at 69 maps page also lists DriveTexas.org for lane-closure and detour information.
Project pages are useful for understanding work planned along a corridor, but dated notices and estimated durations are not live confirmation. TxDOT notes that scheduled closures can be affected by weather and other unforeseen circumstances. Check the current traffic feed and posted signs rather than assuming an old project notice still describes conditions today.

How to choose between route options
There is no universal best alternate route: the official sources do not provide a stable ranking of routes for every closure. Compare options against the specific notice and current traffic information:
- Does the route use the affected freeway segment, ramp or connector?
- Does the posted detour materially change where you travel?
- What delay does a live traffic source currently show?
- Does the route leave you enough time to respond safely to changing signs and traffic control?
Do not assume an alternate route is faster just because it avoids the work area; conditions vary by location and time.

The NHHIP involves reconstruction of the downtown freeway loop system, including I-45, I-69, I-10 and SH 288. Its updates may provide dated local-street detour details, which should be checked against the notice dates and current traffic information.
Likewise, a project estimate gives context, not guaranteed present-day status. For example, the White Oak I-10 page has described a closed I-45 southbound connector to I-10 westbound with an estimate through Summer 2026, subject to change. That historical estimate alone does not establish whether the connector is closed now.
Special-event restrictions can also be specific to one project. A TxDOT Harris County maintenance proposal published in 2025 set closure restrictions on selected Houston roads around listed FIFA 2026 dates; it should not be treated as a schedule that applies to every Houston project.
Why work-zone caution matters
TxDOT reported more than 28,000 crashes in Texas work zones in 2025, resulting in 203 deaths, including seven roadside workers. The agency said most people killed were drivers or passengers. These are statewide figures, not Houston-only counts. TxDOT describes highway work as “often just inches away from speeding traffic.”
Slow down, pay attention to temporary signs and markings, and allow yourself time to react to changing traffic control. Avoid abrupt lane changes when a lane ends or a detour begins; the safest immediate direction is the one indicated by the signs at the location.
