A hotel free night certificate can cover an eligible award night, but it does not guarantee a room at every property or on every date. The certificate’s issuer sets the rules for eligible hotels, room types, point limits, fees, and expiration. Check the exact award in your loyalty account before planning a stay.
What a hotel free night certificate covers
A certificate is a loyalty benefit tied to an account, card, milestone, or promotion. Its name alone does not tell you what it can book. Depending on the program and award, it may be restricted to a standard room, participating properties, available reward inventory, or a maximum point value.

For example, Marriott’s general Free Night Award is for a standard guest room and can be combined with up to 25,000 Bonvoy points, subject to the award’s rules. Hilton’s cited American Express Free Night Reward terms cover one standard double-occupancy accommodation at an eligible portfolio property, subject to availability. IHG’s cited US business anniversary award covers one standard room night up to its 50,000-point level, with account points allowed above that level. These are distinct examples, not rules that apply to every certificate. Marriott Free Night Award rules, Hilton Honors terms, IHG One Rewards terms

Common routes include card anniversary benefits, card-spending thresholds, elite or milestone benefits, and limited-time promotions. Eligibility and details vary by country, card, and offer; the examples below do not form a complete list of current certificates.
#1 Best Overall
- Not redeemable at hotel locations or if you choose the Pay at Hotel option online
- Redemption: Online only
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
- Marriott Bonvoy: Marriott says Free Night Awards may come from co-branded credit cards, select promotions, or elite benefits. Its Annual Choice Benefit offers an award worth up to 40,000 Bonvoy points as a choice for eligible members reaching the stated 50- or 75-night milestone. Marriott says the award is credited within two weeks after selection. Marriott Annual Choice Benefit
- Hilton Honors: The cited terms govern American Express Free Night Rewards. They do not establish that every Hilton card or member receives a certificate. Hilton Honors terms
- IHG One Rewards: The cited US Chase Business offer provides an anniversary certificate each year. Its terms apply to that specific US card benefit, not all IHG cards or markets. IHG US Chase Business offer
- World of Hyatt: Hyatt lists a Category 1–7 Free Night Award as a milestone reward at 100 qualifying nights. That page establishes this example, not the complete rules for every Hyatt certificate. World of Hyatt milestone rewards

How to find and book a usable night
- Open your loyalty account and identify the award. Note its exact name, points ceiling or category, and expiration date. Confirm the award is available in the account you will use to book.
- Check eligible properties and room types. Read the issuer’s terms. A “standard” room is defined by the hotel, and availability may limit which dates or properties qualify.
- Search the program’s own booking channel. Look for eligible award inventory on your dates. A cash room being offered for sale does not mean a certificate can book it.
- Check whether points can top up the certificate. Marriott’s cited general award allows up to 25,000 additional Bonvoy points. The cited IHG US 50K Flex benefit permits account points above its redemption level. The cited Hilton and Hyatt sources do not establish a comparable top-up rule.
- Review the full cost and deadline before confirming. Check taxes, resort fees, incidentals, cancellation rules, and whether the stay must be completed by expiration or only begin by then.
- Save the confirmation and verify the award is attached. For a longer visit, determine how additional nights will be paid for; Marriott says extra nights may require points or separate arrangements depending on the payment method.
These steps follow the issuers’ published rules; they do not imply that availability has been independently tested. Marriott booking and award guidance, Marriott Free Night Award help, Hilton Honors terms, IHG US offer terms

- Redeemable online only
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
Expiration, fees, and other restrictions
Expiration usually has a stay deadline
Do not assume expiration means only that you must book by a date. Marriott says the check-in date for its cited award must be on or before expiration. Hilton says the stay must be completed by expiration. The cited IHG awards must be redeemed and the stay completed within 12 months from issue. Check the specific certificate for the rule that applies to your dates. Marriott award rules, Marriott booking guidance, Hilton terms, IHG offer terms, IHG program rules
“Free” may not mean no out-of-pocket cost
Charges depend on the award. Marriott warns that some hotels charge resort fees at check-in. Hilton’s cited reward terms include applicable room taxes and resort fees. IHG’s cited US business award covers one standard room night and taxes, while incidental charges and mandatory resort fees may remain payable.

Do not assume an award is flexible or transferable
The cited Marriott, Hilton, and IHG terms restrict transfers; the cited Marriott and IHG examples also say awards cannot be extended. A high points cap does not by itself make a certificate valuable. Compare the terms against where and when you actually travel:

- Give the Gift of Travel with a Best Western Gift Card!
- The Best Western Gift Card allows you to fit over 100 countries and territories worldwide into your wallet!
- Redemption: The Best Western Gift Card can be redeemed at over 4,000 Best Western branded hotels worldwide. You can redeem your Best Western Gift Card online when booking a reservation at bestwestern.com or just present it at the hotel when you check-in.
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
- Cost to earn: Consider the required card spending, annual fee, qualifying nights, or other eligibility conditions in your market.
- Usable locations and dates: Check whether participating properties and standard-room award inventory exist where you want to stay.
- Coverage and top-ups: Compare the points ceiling or category and whether the issuer permits adding points.
- Deadline: Account for both the expiration date and any requirement to complete the stay by then.
- Remaining charges: Include resort fees, incidentals, taxes not covered, and any other costs specified by the terms.
- Flexibility: Check transfer, cancellation, rebooking, and extension rules before relying on the award.
The cash price of the room, your points balance, and the dates you can travel all affect usefulness; the published program rules alone do not establish a comparative return.
