Neither booking a hotel directly nor using an online travel agency (OTA) is automatically cheaper, easier to cancel, or better for every trip. Compare the same property, dates, room, occupancy, inclusions, total price and booking rules before paying. Choose the offer whose verified terms best fit your priorities—not the channel with the most appealing headline rate.
What “book direct” and “book through an OTA” mean
A direct booking is a reservation made through a hotel’s own booking channels. An OTA is a separate online intermediary through which you search for and reserve accommodation. The decision is about the reservation channel, but the terms you accept belong to a particular offer: a room, rate, stay dates and set of rules. Two offers for the same hotel can therefore differ even when one is direct and the other is through an OTA.

That distinction matters most when comparing price, cancellation, changes, loyalty eligibility and support. The channel name alone does not tell you which offer is best. Read the rules attached to the exact rate you are considering, and check which party the reservation terms identify for each action.
Start with a like-for-like comparison
A lower nightly figure is not enough to establish that one offer costs less. The rates need to match on the features that affect what you receive and what you owe. Marriott’s best-rate guarantee criteria illustrate how specific that comparison can be: the property, room, guest count, dates, inclusions and cancellation conditions all matter. A lower price for a different room or a stricter rate is not an equivalent alternative.

- Match the property and dates. Check the exact hotel and every night of the stay. A different property in the same area, or a different date pattern, is not a direct comparison.
- Match the room and occupancy. Compare the same room and bed category, and the same number of guests. A change in room type or guest count can change the value and price of an offer.
- Match what is included. Check whether breakfast and other listed benefits are included, and account for taxes, resort or destination charges, and other payable amounts shown for the offer. Compare the total payable, not just the headline nightly rate.
- Match payment and refund rules. Note when payment is due, whether a deposit is required, and what happens to the amount paid if you cancel.
- Match cancellation and change rules. Record the deadline, any fee after it, and whether changing dates is allowed. “Free cancellation” is meaningful only when you know the cutoff and conditions.
- Check loyalty eligibility. If points or elite-night credit matter to you, verify the hotel brand’s current program terms for that channel and rate.
- Identify the contact for each task. Look in the reservation terms for who handles changes, cancellations and booking support.
If any item differs, you are comparing different offers rather than simply different ways to buy the same thing. Decide whether the difference is worth the price gap before treating one as the better deal.
Why direct booking is not always cheaper
Hotels may vary prices, availability, terms and conditions across sales channels. UK government guidance published by the Competition and Markets Authority on July 5, 2017 describes that flexibility, including the possibility of lower prices through offline or private closed-user channels. The page is older guidance about the UK context, not a current, exhaustive account of competition law everywhere.
There is also a jurisdiction-specific European Union development. In a factsheet dated September 28, 2026, the European Commission describes the Digital Markets Act requirement that Booking.com allow accommodation partners covered by the rule to offer different prices, availability, inventory or commercial conditions on other online channels, including their own websites. This applies to covered partners and the channels within the rule’s scope; it should not be read as a universal pricing rule for every hotel, OTA or country.
These sources support a practical conclusion, not a promise of savings: offers can differ by channel, so check the actual options available for your stay. A direct rate could be the better fit, but the channel itself does not establish that it is the cheapest. Nor does a lower OTA headline rate settle the comparison if it excludes an inclusion or comes with less favorable cancellation terms.

How to compare the full cost
For each offer, note the final amount the booking page says you will pay and the conditions attached to that amount. If the page separates taxes or charges from the displayed rate, include the amounts that are payable for the stay when comparing totals. Do not infer a charge, discount or benefit that is not shown in the offer details.
Then compare the full set of terms alongside the total:
- Same stay: property, dates, room and number of guests.
- Same value: breakfast and any other listed inclusions or benefits.
- Same financial commitment: total payable, payment timing and deposit conditions.
- Same flexibility: cancellation deadline and fee, refund conditions, and whether a date change is permitted.
If two offers are not equivalent, write down the trade-off instead of reducing the decision to price alone. For example, a lower total may be attractive to someone certain of their dates, while a more flexible offer may matter more to someone whose plans could change. That is a preference decision; it is not proof that one channel is generally better.

Read cancellation and change terms for the specific rate
There is no reliable channel-wide rule that direct reservations are easier to cancel or that OTA reservations are less flexible. The policy displayed for the specific reservation governs. Booking.com says the property determines any cancellation fee and sets the policy for that booking. Expedia’s terms direct customers to the relevant travel provider’s rules and restrictions, and say that an administration fee may also apply in some cases.

Before paying, find the cancellation terms for the exact room and rate, rather than relying on a general help page or the label attached to a search result. Confirm the local time or other deadline details if they are displayed, the fee that applies after the deadline, and whether cancellation before the deadline produces a refund or is subject to another condition. Keep the confirmation and the terms shown when you booked so you can refer to the accepted offer.
Check date changes separately. A reservation that can be cancelled under stated conditions does not necessarily allow a date change on the same terms. Booking.com notes that non-refundable offers can carry charges and may not permit date changes. If a change is important, verify that permission and any cost explicitly; do not treat “refundable” and “changeable” as interchangeable.
Check loyalty terms by hotel brand
Loyalty eligibility is not a general advantage of booking direct across the hotel industry. It depends on the brand’s program terms, the booking channel and whether the selected rate qualifies. If earning points or elite-night credit is part of your calculation, check those rules before comparing the offers’ monetary totals.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMarriott’s Help Center guidance, updated July 23, 2026, says reservations made through its defined official channels can be eligible for Bonvoy benefits when the rate qualifies and the program terms are met. Marriott also says reservations through third-party online retailers are generally ineligible for points and elite-night credit, subject to its full program terms and exceptions. Its policy is an example for that brand, not a rule that can be assumed for another hotel group.
Rank #4
For a Marriott stay, first establish whether the channel is one Marriott defines as official, then check whether the particular rate qualifies. For any other brand, look up that brand’s current loyalty terms rather than applying Marriott’s policy by analogy. If eligibility is uncertain, do not count potential points or credit as guaranteed value in the comparison.
Know who handles a change, cancellation or support request
Do not assume one channel resolves problems faster. The available evidence does not establish a general service-quality winner between hotel-direct and OTA reservations. Instead, check the terms for the particular booking and identify the party named for the task you may need to perform.
Before checkout, establish where you would submit a cancellation, who can amend the reservation, and which contact the booking identifies for support. The answer may differ by task, so check each rather than assuming that the party that collected the booking request controls every later step. If a request is time-sensitive, use the contact and procedure in the confirmation or reservation terms, and retain the relevant messages and confirmation details.
This check is especially useful when an offer has a price or flexibility advantage that depends on a condition you may need to exercise. The party responsible for a cancellation fee or a date change should be clear from the terms you accept. If the offer does not make the relevant procedure clear, resolve that uncertainty before paying rather than relying on a general belief about either channel.

Use a priority-based decision
Once you have matched the offers, choose according to what matters most for this stay. Do not assign a universal winner to the channel; compare the actual reservation conditions.
If the lowest verified total is your priority
Compare the full payable amount for equivalent rooms and terms. Check inclusions and cancellation conditions before deciding that a lower figure is a saving. If the options differ, decide whether the price difference compensates for the less favorable feature you would give up.
If flexibility matters most
Compare the precise cancellation deadline, fee and refund conditions, and verify whether date changes are allowed. Select the offer whose written policy fits your uncertainty about the trip. The channel label does not substitute for those terms.

Confirm eligibility under the specific hotel brand’s program and the particular rate. Consider only benefits that the published rules say apply to that reservation; do not assume every direct offer qualifies or every third-party booking is treated identically by every brand.
If managing the booking matters most
Inspect the reservation’s instructions for changes, cancellations and support. Choose the offer whose stated process you are comfortable following. Do not rely on an unsupported expectation that a hotel or OTA will always be easier to reach.
A practical booking workflow
- Choose the exact stay. Set the property, dates, room category and guest count you want to compare.
- Review available offers in the channels you are considering. Record the rate name and its terms, not just the first displayed price.
- Build a side-by-side comparison. Use the same attributes for each offer: total payable, inclusions, payment timing, deposit, cancellation deadline and fee, date-change rules, loyalty eligibility and support contact.
- Resolve differences. If a rate is cheaper but has a stricter cancellation rule, decide whether that trade-off suits your plans. If a room or inclusion differs, do not call the rates equivalent.
- Recheck the final checkout screen. Confirm the property, dates, guests, room, total and accepted terms before submitting payment or reservation details.
- Save the confirmation and terms. Keep the booking reference and the conditions attached to the reservation so you can follow the correct process if you need help later.
Common comparison mistakes
- Choosing by the nightly rate alone. A headline amount may not represent the full payable total or include the same benefits as another offer.
- Comparing different rooms. Room and bed categories matter; a lower rate for another category is not a like-for-like price.
- Assuming “free cancellation” means unlimited flexibility. Verify the deadline and the conditions for a refund, then check date changes separately.
- Assuming a loyalty rule applies everywhere. Program eligibility is brand- and rate-specific. Marriott’s terms should not be presented as the policy of every hotel chain.
- Expecting a universal support advantage. Comparative service quality is not established here. Follow the contact and process named for your reservation.
- Applying one country’s rules globally. The UK guidance is dated and jurisdiction-specific; the European Commission’s DMA explanation concerns Booking.com and accommodation partners covered by that EU rule.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The cited official materials establish that channel offers can differ, that cancellation and payment conditions depend on the individual reservation, and that loyalty eligibility is governed by brand-specific rules. They do not establish a typical savings amount, a universally cheaper booking route, or a general winner for customer support. No market-wide savings figure is needed to make a sound decision: the offer’s own total and terms are the relevant evidence for your stay.
Marriott’s best-rate guarantee requirements provide a useful illustration of the detail involved in comparing rates, but they are Marriott’s criteria, not a universal guarantee available for every hotel or OTA. Likewise, the European Commission’s September 28, 2026 factsheet concerns a defined DMA obligation, while the UK government page from July 5, 2017 should be treated as older UK guidance. Keep those scopes intact when using either source to understand a particular booking.
