HostGator is the better shortlist if you want lower-cost shared hosting and are comfortable handling more of your site’s administration. WP Engine is the better shortlist if you want a managed WordPress platform with WordPress-focused support and hosting features such as backups, staging and security tools. They are not equivalent entry-level plans: compare the specific site limits, capacity, billing term and renewal price that fit your site.
What is the main difference?
HostGator offers shared web hosting as well as a separate WordPress hosting product. Its published plan documentation describes site counts, storage and resource limits, along with access to tools such as the WordPress dashboard, FTP and email. WP Engine sells managed WordPress hosting, with plan tiers that specify site, visit, storage and bandwidth ranges and list platform-management features.

That distinction affects more than convenience. Shared hosting may suit a simple site when its owner is willing to manage WordPress upkeep and check plan limits. Managed hosting may be worth a higher recurring fee when a team values a more WordPress-focused support path and built-in operational features. Neither vendor’s published feature list is an independent comparison of real-world speed or reliability.

Compare the amount due for the same period, then check what happens at renewal. A promotional monthly headline is not the same thing as a regular rate, and HostGator’s listed term totals are billed up front. WP Engine’s offers and renewal schedule depend on plan, currency and billing choice.

HostGator: regular prices shown in its 2026 price chart
HostGator’s regular USD prices below are for the stated hosting category and term. The chart shows the full term total and its monthly equivalent; HostGator says the chosen term is billed up front. Promotional prices, where offered, are separate and apply until renewal.
| Category and plan | 1 month | 1 year | 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared Hatchling | $17.59 | $158.27 total ($13.19/month) | $395.61 total ($10.99/month) |

| Shared Business | $30.79 | $290.27 total ($24.19/month) | $791.61 total ($21.99/month) |
| WordPress Baby | $24.19 | $224.27 total ($18.69/month) | $593.61 total ($16.49/month) |
| WordPress Business | $30.79 | $290.27 total ($24.19/month) | $791.61 total ($21.99/month) |
| WordPress Pro | $38.49 | $382.67 total ($31.89/month) | $1,068.81 total ($29.69/month) |
The shared-hosting page also advertised offer prices of $2.75/month for Hatchling, $3.95/month for Baby and $5.95/month for Business when its search result was accessed. These are offer prices, not enduring rates. Hatchling was described as single-domain, while Baby and Business were described as multi-domain. Check the current checkout terms before purchase. WP Engine: separate offers from renewal prices
WP Engine’s updated pricing notice lists core-plan subscription prices in USD effective at the next renewal on or after March 11, 2026: Lite $17/month, Startup $35/month, Professional $65/month, Growth $130/month and Scale $330/month. These are renewal prices, not a direct match to HostGator’s promotional headlines. WP Engine’s current plans page also describes Essential-plan offers for new customers, with first-year and renewal caveats, possible taxes and overages, and an annual billing option advertised as saving 20%. Verify the selected country, currency, plan and checkout terms rather than combining an offer with a renewal figure. WP Engine updated pricing notice · WP Engine plans and pricing

What capacity does each provider publish?
The capacity figures are not directly interchangeable. HostGator’s documentation lists plan-level sites, storage and resource limits; WP Engine publishes estimated monthly visits as well as storage and bandwidth. Use the measures relevant to your workload and confirm current limits before choosing.

HostGator WordPress hosting
HostGator’s feature summary lists Baby for 20 websites and 20 GB SSD storage, Business for 50 websites and 50 GB SSD, and Pro for 100 websites and 100 GB SSD. It also lists one-click WordPress installation, Cloudflare CDN, WordPress dashboard/FTP/email access, up to 25% server-resource use and 25 simultaneous processes. These are published plan limits and features, not a guarantee of a particular workload’s performance. HostGator’s shared-hosting features differ; the same summary lists Cloudflare CDN for shared Baby and Business plans. HostGator hosting comparison feature summary

| Tier | Sites | Estimated monthly visits | Storage | Bandwidth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | 1–30 | 25,000–400,000 | 10–50 GB | 75 GB |
| Core | 30–50 | 400,000–800,000 | 50 GB–2 TB | 550 GB |
| Enterprise | 50+ | 800,000+ | 2 TB+ | 550 GB+ |
WP Engine labels visit counts as estimates; the appropriate configured plan may depend on site and traffic characteristics. Confirm fit with the provider if you have traffic spikes or a dynamic site. The plans page describes Essential resources as shared and Core and Enterprise resources as isolated. WP Engine plans and pricing

What maintenance, support and security features are listed?
WP Engine’s plan descriptions include managed WordPress, PHP and MySQL, 24/7 technical support, security patching, plugin-risk scans, DDoS protection, automatic and on-demand backups, staging and EverCache. Its comparison shows plugin/theme update automation and uptime monitoring as add-ons on Essential and included on higher tiers; confirm the bundle for the exact configuration you are considering. Core and Enterprise descriptions list a 99.99% uptime guarantee. That is a plan-specific vendor guarantee, not measured uptime and not a guarantee established here for every WP Engine tier.
HostGator’s listed WordPress plans include installation, CDN and dashboard/FTP/email access, but the feature summary is not a like-for-like account of managed maintenance. Check the current plan and support terms for the backup, security and administration work you expect the host to handle. WP Engine plans and pricing · HostGator hosting comparison feature summary

Which host fits your situation?
- A simple, budget-sensitive site: Start with HostGator if its site and resource limits fit and you can manage WordPress upkeep. Include the renewal rate in your budget, not only the sign-up offer.
- A WordPress-dependent business that wants managed operations: Start with WP Engine if the recurring cost fits and its plan features match what you need. Select a tier by site count and expected traffic, and check whether desired automation or monitoring is included or an add-on.
- An agency or multi-site operator: Compare the total cost for all sites, the published site caps, access and hand-off needs, and the support path. A one-site entry price does not answer whether a multi-site workload fits.
- An e-commerce or revenue-critical site: Ask each provider about traffic spikes, recovery objectives and the exact service-level terms for the plan you would buy. WP Engine’s listed Core and Enterprise descriptions include isolated resources and the stated uptime guarantee; this does not establish that it outperforms HostGator in an independent comparison.
What the published information cannot settle
The plan and pricing details cited here come from the vendors’ own pages. They establish what each provider says it offers, not which host is faster, more reliable, safer in practice or better rated for support. No independent speed, uptime, support-satisfaction or total-cost comparison is established by these published figures. Your decision should therefore turn on your required capacity, the work you want handled for you, and the actual quote and renewal terms for your configuration.
