If Cochonnet keeps closing on your Steam Deck, start with SteamOS updates, a restart, and a check of the game’s files. The game’s Steam listing currently gives it an Unknown compatibility status, which means Valve has not checked it for Deck compatibility—not that it is officially unsupported. There is no established Cochonnet-specific crash cause or confirmed Deck fix, so the steps below are general Steam troubleshooting, not guaranteed remedies.

What Cochonnet’s Steam Deck status means

Valve defines the Unknown category as: “We haven’t checked this game for compatibility yet.” Its other categories distinguish games that work out of the box (Verified), may need user configuration (Playable), or are not currently considered playable (Unsupported). Compatibility reviews are ongoing, so check the Cochonnet Steam listing for the current status.

The listing’s minimum requirements are for Windows: Windows 10 or higher (64-bit), a 3 GHz processor or higher, 4 GB RAM, and 2 GB of available storage. Those specifications do not establish how the game performs or behaves on Steam Deck.

Try these seven checks in order

After each step, launch Cochonnet and see whether the symptom changes. That makes it easier to identify what helped and to undo a setting that made things worse.

  1. Install SteamOS updates and restart

Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates, install any available updates, then restart using Steam > Power > Restart. Valve recommends updates and a restart as initial steps for Steam Deck instability.

  2. Temporarily close third-party Desktop Mode apps

Exit or disable apps you added through Desktop Mode, restart the Deck, and test the game again. This is a way to isolate a possible software conflict; it does not mean any particular app is known to conflict with Cochonnet.

    • 【3X Faster Downloads with Wi-Fi 6E】 Never wait for a game again. 3. Verify Cochonnet’s installed files

From Cochonnet’s Library page, open Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Steam recommends verification for crashes that may stem from missing or incorrect installed files. It can take several minutes. A few files may fail verification because they are local configuration files; Steam says that can be normal.

  4. Clear the download cache if Cochonnet will not start

In Steam settings, open Downloads > Clear Download Cache. Steam lists this as a possible step when a game will not start. It does not remove installed games, but Steam will ask you to sign in again. This checks the Steam client’s state; it is not a Cochonnet-specific fix.

  5. Test the latest Proton compatibility tool

In the game’s Library menu, open Properties > Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and try the latest Proton option shown. Treat this as a reversible experiment, not a guaranteed solution. Note the original setting first, and test one change at a time so you can switch back if needed.

  6. Lower graphics settings if the crash follows slowdown

If Cochonnet stutters, slows down, or closes during demanding gameplay, reduce its graphics preset or individual graphics settings and retest. This is more relevant to crashes under load than to a game that fails immediately on launch.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
    • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
    • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
    • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
    • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
    • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
  7. Report a crash that persists

Check the Steam listing for any compatibility-status change, then contact Steam Support or the game’s developer through the game’s support route. Include your Deck model (LCD or OLED), SteamOS version, game build if available, when the crash happens, and the steps you already tried. Valve’s Steam Deck software guidance applies to both LCD and OLED models.

Match the next step to the symptom

  • It will not launch: verify the game files, then consider clearing the download cache. If you test Proton, record the original setting so you can revert.
  • It closes during play after stuttering or slowdown: lower graphics settings and retest.
  • It still crashes without a clear pattern: provide Steam Support or the developer with the device, software, game-build, and crash details listed above.

Steam lists Cochonnet as a casual indie pétanque game from Hardi Engin, released May 29, 2026, with online play, offline custom games, bot practice, practice modes, and a downloadable demo. Store details can change; use the listing for current information.
