WordPress.com is the better fit if you want WordPress hosting and platform management bundled together; HostGator is a better fit if you want a conventional hosting account with cPanel and the option to install WordPress yourself. HostGator also sells managed WordPress hosting, so compare that product separately from its shared hosting. Neither provider is a proven speed or uptime winner based on the available evidence; choose by the exact plan’s features, management level, and full-term cost.
How the hosting models differ
WordPress.com is a hosted WordPress platform: the provider manages the hosting environment and describes features such as automatic updates, backups, scaling, and a content delivery network. HostGator sells shared hosting plans that list WordPress installation, and it also offers a separate managed WordPress product. Those are different levels of service, not interchangeable names for the same plan.

As WordPress.com explains, “WordPress.com and WordPress.org both run on the same WordPress software—the main difference is hosting.” WordPress.org refers to the open-source software you can use with hosting you obtain and manage; WordPress.com is a hosted service. WordPress.com’s comparison guide describes the distinction.

Choose WordPress.com for a bundled workflow
It suits site owners who want one platform for the WordPress site and its hosting infrastructure, rather than setting up a conventional hosting account. Its hosting page describes automatic updates, backups, scaling, and a CDN. These are the provider’s descriptions, not an independent comparison of performance.

Choose the HostGator product that matches your needs
HostGator shared hosting is the conventional option: the hosting account includes WordPress installation, with the customer choosing and managing the site. Its managed WordPress hosting is a distinct product with its own features and terms. Check the product name at checkout before comparing plans.
What do the advertised prices actually tell you?
The starting prices are not like-for-like totals. WordPress.com’s hosting page lists Personal at $2.75 per month when billed every three years, or $9 per month when billed monthly. HostGator’s shared-hosting page lists promotional starting prices of $2.75 per month for Hatchling, $3.95 for Baby, and $5.95 for Business. These figures come from the providers’ current pages as accessed in 2026; offers, currencies, and terms can change.
| Option | Published starting price | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress.com Personal | $2.75/month billed every three years, or $9/month billed monthly, according to WordPress.com’s hosting page. | Billing term, currency, renewal price, and any features or add-ons needed for your site. |
| HostGator Hatchling shared hosting | $2.75/month promotional starting price, according to HostGator’s shared-hosting page. | Introductory term, renewal rate, taxes, and any required add-ons. |
| HostGator Baby shared hosting | $3.95/month promotional starting price, according to HostGator’s shared-hosting page. | Introductory term, renewal rate, taxes, and any required add-ons. |
| HostGator Business shared hosting | $5.95/month promotional starting price, according to HostGator’s shared-hosting page. | Introductory term, renewal rate, taxes, and any required add-ons. |
To compare budgets, calculate what you will pay at signup and the expected renewal charges over the period you expect to keep the site. A low monthly equivalent can require a longer upfront commitment. The listed entry prices do not establish the total cost of ownership. See WordPress.com’s pricing page and HostGator’s pricing details for current billing and offer terms.

Yes, WordPress.com allows plugin installation on paid plans; its free plan does not. The provider’s current plan-features guide and host-selection guide describe plugin access on paid plans and third-party theme uploads, subject to compatibility limits. Older advice that plugins are universally restricted to a higher business tier is out of date.
Rank #3
HostGator lists WordPress installation on its shared plans, but you should confirm the software access and any relevant limits for the specific plan you intend to buy. For either service, list must-have plugins, themes, developer tools, and store requirements first, then match them against the plan: access to plugins does not mean every plan includes identical advanced features.
Backups, restores, domains, and SSL
Backups and restoration
WordPress.com says it automatically saves a site backup daily, and sometimes more often when there are numerous large changes. However, direct restore access depends on the plan, according to its host-selection guidance. A backup being made does not necessarily mean every customer can restore it in the same way.
Rank #4
HostGator’s managed WordPress material describes backup and restore features, but the reviewed plan information does not establish a complete, equivalent entitlement for every shared-hosting tier. Before buying, confirm the chosen plan’s backup cadence, retention period, restore method, and whether restoration is included.
Recommended Free Tools
Domains and SSL
WordPress.com says its sites receive SSL. Its annual paid plans include a free first-year domain, while monthly plans do not; the domain offer is not a permanently free registration. HostGator lists free SSL for shared hosting. Its first-year free-domain offer applies to qualifying 12-, 24-, or 36-month shared, WordPress, or Cloud signups, with regular renewal rates afterward. Confirm eligibility and renewal charges for the exact plan. Details are in WordPress.com’s pricing information, its host-selection guide, HostGator’s shared-hosting page, and its managed WordPress terms.
Best Value
WordPress.com lists email hosting as an add-on, not as included in the plan price. The available HostGator information does not establish a complete email comparison across the relevant plans, so confirm whether a mailbox is included and what it costs to renew before treating email as part of either package.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support, security, and performance
WordPress.com describes human support for account, how-to, and troubleshooting questions, with availability tied to its plans. HostGator lists 24/7 phone and live-chat support. These are published service descriptions, not independent measures of response time or support quality. HostGator’s service overview lists its support channels.
Both providers document security-related features, including SSL; WordPress.com also describes managed platform controls, and HostGator lists security features on its hosting pages. That is not a comparative security audit, so it does not establish that either service is categorically safer.
WordPress.com reports more than 99.99% uptime since 2005 and describes a CDN with 28+ data centers across six continents. These are provider-published statements, not a matched independent test or guarantee. The available evidence does not provide comparable speed tests, uptime monitoring, or load testing for both providers, so it cannot support a performance winner.
Quick Recap
Which provider should you choose?
- Pick WordPress.com if you value a bundled managed WordPress workflow and want the provider to handle more platform infrastructure and routine updates. Check the plan for plugin access, restore options, developer tools, and total price.
- Pick HostGator shared hosting if you want a conventional hosting account with cPanel and one-click WordPress installation, and are comfortable choosing and managing the site within that hosting environment.
- Consider HostGator managed WordPress if you want HostGator specifically but prefer its managed WordPress product to ordinary shared hosting. Compare its own backup, support, and billing terms rather than assuming shared-plan features carry over.
- For a store or a site dependent on particular plugins, verify the essential plugins, themes, developer access, restore needs, and email requirements against the exact plan before committing.
- For a cost-first decision, compare the actual signup charge and renewal costs over your likely ownership period, including domain and email charges where relevant.
