In a server, that connection provides a path between the host and storage devices, enclosures, or shared storage. The name describes the adapter’s role; it does not by itself tell you which protocol, ports, or storage features a particular card supports.
What does a host bus adapter do?
An HBA provides the host-side connection to an input/output path. In a storage setup, that path lets a computer communicate with drives or storage systems. The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) defines an HBA as “an I/O adapter that connects a host computer bus to an I/O interconnect” in its SNIA Dictionary, dated June 26, 2024.

In SCSI terminology, the Linux kernel describes the controller that connects a host to a bus carrying SCSI commands as a host bus adapter. SCSI commands can travel over different physical connections, so the term does not name just one cable or protocol. The Linux kernel SCSI Interfaces Guide discusses SCSI over connections including USB, SATA, SAS, Fibre Channel, FireWire, and ATAPI.

No. SNIA notes that HBA is the preferred term for Fibre Channel and SAS interconnects, but the acronym alone does not establish what a specific adapter supports. For example, Broadcom describes PCIe adapter families that support SAS, SATA, and NVMe storage. Check the exact model’s documentation to confirm its supported protocols and drive types.

- Chipset: LSI SAS3008
- Firmware (FW) version: P16 (16.00.14.00) IT Mode
- Interface: 2 * SFF-8643 Internal 12Gbps, PCI-e 3.0 x8
- Package: controller card, full-height bracket, low-profile bracket
For shared storage, an HBA may connect a server to a Fibre Channel fabric; in a direct-attached setup, it may connect the host to SAS or SATA drives. The appropriate adapter depends on the storage system and host configuration.
What is the difference between an HBA and a port?
The HBA is the adapter or controller; a host port is one of its physical I/O connections. An adapter can have one or more ports. Lenovo describes an HBA board in a host with one or more host ports, and SNIA’s Fibre Channel HBA specification likewise describes a physical HBA containing one or more Fibre Channel ports.

- Package: controller card, full-height bracket, low-profile bracket.
As a result, a port count is not the same as a count of adapters. Check whether a product’s stated ports are internal or external, and confirm the connector and cable type before planning a connection.
Is an HBA the same as a RAID controller?
Not necessarily. “HBA” identifies a host-to-I/O connection role; it does not guarantee hardware RAID, cache, or a particular pass-through mode. Samsung’s HBA explanation notes that some HBAs support RAID and some use DRAM cache, while Broadcom’s adapter lineup varies by protocol and port configuration. Those are model-specific capabilities, not universal properties of HBAs.

If you need RAID, direct drive access, cache, or boot support, verify that the exact adapter model and its documentation explicitly support the required feature. Do not infer it from the HBA label alone.
Can an HBA be virtual?
Yes, in some virtualization documentation. Oracle’s Solaris documentation describes a virtual SCSI HBA made up of a virtual HBA in a guest domain and a virtual SAN in a service domain; together, these components implement a SCSI HBA interface. This is a specific virtualized architecture, distinct from the usual reference to a physical adapter.

What should you check before choosing an HBA?
For a server installation or replacement, use the exact card and platform specifications rather than the generic HBA label. Confirm:

- Ports and connectors: Check the number and type of internal or external ports, connector format, and cable compatibility.
- Host compatibility: Confirm that the server has a suitable PCIe slot and that the card is supported by the platform.
- Operating system and drivers: Check support for your operating system and required driver.
- Storage behavior: Verify any required RAID, pass-through, cache, or boot features in the exact product documentation.
These checks matter because adapters differ in protocols, port configurations, and supported features. Vendor documentation, including Broadcom’s storage adapter information and HPE’s Fibre Channel HBA information, illustrates that product capabilities vary; compatibility still needs to be checked against the selected card and server.
