The current Legacies of the Age of Darkness: Legio Custodes supplement adds selected units; it is not a stand-alone army book. Within that supplement, “Expanded” is a profile category, not a restriction on whether you may field a unit.
Which books govern a Legio Custodes force?
The rules sources have different jobs. Liber Custodes is Games Workshop’s central army book for the faction, while the Age of Darkness Rulebook supplies the wider game rules. The Third Edition supplement, Legacies of the Age of Darkness: Legio Custodes, adds selected units for detachments using the Legio Custodes Army List in Liber Custodes.

The supplement identifies both Liber Custodes and the Age of Darkness Rulebook as prerequisites. Its foreword says it “supplements the Army Lists found in the Liber Custodes Army Book” and allows players to include Expanded Units in their battles. In practice, use the army book for the faction’s army-list foundation, the core rulebook for the game’s general framework, and Legacies when you want to use a profile it provides. Reading only the supplement does not give you the complete rules set it expects you to have.

The document identified in Games Workshop’s surfaced materials is Legacies of the Age of Darkness: Legio Custodes, Third Edition, Version 1.0, with a 2026 copyright. Check the version printed on the rules document you are using, since Games Workshop can update PDFs and rules. A separately surfaced Talons of the Emperor PDF is Version 1.1 and covers Legio Custodes, Anathema Psykana and Agents of the Divisio Assassinorum. It is a different rules document; its version label should not be mistaken for the version of the Third Edition Legacies supplement.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters when checking a rule or sharing a list with another player: name the book and edition, not just “the Custodes PDF.” Talons of the Emperor is an official reference, but its different scope and version label do not make it interchangeable with the Third Edition Legacies document. If your group is comparing profiles or resolving a list-building question, make sure everyone is consulting the same edition and the relevant army-list source.
What does “Expanded” mean?
Legacies labels every profile it contains as Expanded. That classification describes the profile category, not a ban, a sign that a unit is unofficial, or a statement that it is available only in a particular kind of game. Games Workshop’s explanation says Core and Expanded profiles may both be freely used in a Horus Heresy battle and that the category does not change a unit’s availability in an army or detachment.
So do not treat “Expanded” as a separate permission check when deciding whether a profile can appear in your force. Instead, use the current army-list and detachment rules to build the force, and consult the relevant profile and equipment rules for the unit itself. Legacies is a selection of additional units, not a catalog that establishes a role or provides a complete profile for every Custodes unit.

The official explanation says the category itself does not alter availability, so do not infer a restriction from the word Expanded alone.
How to choose between the Achillus and Galatus
The official January 2026 preview gives two clear, contrasting role cues for the Contemptor-Achillus and Contemptor-Galatus. It describes the Achillus as a threat to enemy armour and the Galatus as a crowd-control choice. Those are publisher descriptions, not independent performance testing or a substitute for checking the complete current profiles.

| Unit | Role described by Games Workshop | Equipment cue in the preview | Durability cue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contemptor-Achillus | Armour-hunting; the preview says it can make short work of enemy armour. | Spear, described as dealing Damage 3. | No comparative durability claim was given in the preview. |
| Contemptor-Galatus | Crowd control. | Warblade and a flamer in its sword. | The preview points to additional durability from its shield. |
Use that contrast as a starting point for force planning: consider the Achillus when the target you want it to threaten is armour, and the Galatus when the preview’s control emphasis and shield cue better fit the job you have in mind. Damage 3 is the figure stated for the Achillus spear in the January 2026 preview; consult the current profile for its full rules and context before applying it in a game.
The preview does not establish points costs, movement, a full weapon-stat comparison, relative efficiency, or how either dreadnought performs into particular matchups. Those details should come from the current unit profiles and the rules for the game being played, not from the short role descriptions. In particular, “crowd control” is a role label supported by the Galatus’s described kit, not a quantified claim about how many models it will affect.
The practical comparison is therefore deliberately narrow. The Achillus is the preview’s named answer to enemy armour, with its spear as the equipment cue and Damage 3 as the stated figure. The Galatus is presented around control, with a warblade, a flamer in its sword and extra shield durability called out. If you are choosing between them, begin with the battlefield task you want the model to serve, then check the complete current profiles for the information the preview does not provide. Do not use the role labels as a substitute for points, weapon rules or a direct efficiency comparison.
What Custodes add as Loyalist allies
A Games Workshop article dated 17 March 2026 describes a Legio Custodes Allied Detachment for Loyalist players. In that setup, the detachment provides a Command slot for a Shield Captain and Troops slots for Custodian and Sentinel Guard Sodalities. This is a specific allied-force example, not a claim that every Custodes army must be built as an allied detachment.
The article says these models are capable at ranged combat but particularly shine in melee. It also highlights eternity blades, their Initiative modifier and Duellist’s Edge (1), alongside access to four special Gambits. These are article-level descriptions of the featured allied force; they should not be extended to every Legio Custodes unit or treated as a replacement for the actual unit and weapon rules.

For a Loyalist player considering the example, the useful decision is whether the Custodes slots and featured melee strengths serve a purpose in the larger force. Confirm the allied detachment’s current restrictions, the exact profiles you plan to use and any applicable game rules in the relevant books. The March article supplies the slot outline, but not a comprehensive guide to every list-building interaction.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The slot outline is useful because it identifies the kind of units the featured allied detachment brings: a Shield Captain in its Command slot and Guard Sodalities in its Troops slots. The article’s comments about ranged capability and a particular strength in melee describe the models featured there; they are not a universal claim that every Custodes unit has the same battlefield role. Keep the article’s example, the underlying army-list rules and the individual unit profiles distinct when building a force.
What the four special Gambits tell you
The March 2026 article identifies four special Gambits and uses Stone’s Aegis and World Serpent’s Bane as examples. It characterizes the first as defensive and the second as a lethal-strike option. These names illustrate different approaches—protection and decisive offense—rather than a complete account of the Gambits’ timing, eligibility, effects or costs.
Use the article’s descriptions to understand why Gambits are a notable part of the allied-Custodes presentation, then read the current Gambit rules before choosing or resolving one. The article identifies four special Gambits in total, but only names Stone’s Aegis and World Serpent’s Bane in the cited description. It does not support ranking all four, prescribing when each should be used, or asserting exact game effects beyond the defensive and lethal-strike characterizations given for those two examples.
That gives you a useful high-level distinction without pretending to provide the rules text: Stone’s Aegis is the defensive example, while World Serpent’s Bane is presented as a lethal-strike option. The exact eligibility, timing, resolution and any costs belong to the current rules, not the short allied-force overview. If you want to use one in a game, check those details before play rather than relying on the name or broad description alone.

A practical way to assemble the rules picture
- Confirm the edition. Check that your group is playing Third Edition and that the Legacies document in use is labeled Third Edition, Version 1.0, or a later applicable update.
- Start with the army book and core rules. Use Liber Custodes for the Legio Custodes army-list foundation and the Age of Darkness Rulebook for the core game rules.
- Add Legacies only for profiles it supplies. Treat the supplement as an expansion to the army lists, not a stand-alone source for an entire force.
- Read “Expanded” correctly. The label itself does not prohibit a profile or alter its availability; check the army and detachment rules that actually apply to your list.
- Choose a role from supported cues, then verify rules details. The preview positions the Achillus against armour and the Galatus for crowd control. For costs, full statistics, and restrictions, use the current profiles rather than inferring them from those summaries.
- For the allied example, verify the detachment in your rules. The March 2026 article describes a Command slot for a Shield Captain and Troops slots for Custodian and Sentinel Guard Sodalities, but the rules documents govern the game you play.
What should you get to use Custodes rules?
If you are deciding what book to obtain, Liber Custodes: The Forces of the Emperor Army Book is the direct physical-product fit for the central Legio Custodes army rules, and Games Workshop identifies Liber Custodes as essential to using the faction. For the Legacies supplement, the stated prerequisites are Liber Custodes and the Age of Darkness Rulebook; the supplement alone is not a complete rules set. The exact product listing and rules version can change, so check the current Games Workshop listing and the document you intend to use.
The cited rules information does not establish a price, retailer availability or a particular discount. Nor does it establish that any paint, tool or accessory is required to use these rules. A model purchase is a separate decision from having the books needed to check an army list: the article’s unit examples can help orient your reading, but the current profiles and list rules should guide an actual force choice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the role descriptions do—and do not—cover
The named examples explain how to read a small part of the Custodes range: an armour-focused dreadnought, a crowd-control-oriented dreadnought, and a Loyalist allied detachment featuring Guard Sodalities and a Shield Captain. They do not amount to a complete unit-by-unit tactical guide. No comprehensive role descriptions or full profiles for every Custodes unit are established here, so assigning precise battlefield jobs to units not covered by those examples would go beyond the supported information.
For a rules decision, prioritize the current profile and relevant army-list text over a preview’s shorthand. For a force-planning decision, use the preview descriptions as orientation: identify the target or battlefield task you need, then check whether the actual unit rules, points and detachment requirements make the choice suitable in your game.

That same caution applies to claims about performance. The cited preview gives a role description and a Damage 3 figure for the Achillus spear, but it does not provide points, a full statistical breakdown or evidence for competitive win rates. The March article names four Gambits but does not provide enough detail here to compare their exact effects. Keep those boundaries in mind, and use the Third Edition rules documents for the decisions that depend on precise mechanics.

Frequently Asked Questions
What book do I need to play Custodes in Horus Heresy?
Liber Custodes is the central Legio Custodes army book, and you also need the Age of Darkness Rulebook for the core game rules. If you want to use units from the Third Edition Legacies of the Age of Darkness: Legio Custodes supplement, Games Workshop says it supplements Liber Custodes and is not stand-alone.
Can I use Expanded Custodes units?
Yes. Games Workshop says Core and Expanded profiles may both be freely used in a Horus Heresy battle, and that the category does not change a unit’s availability in an army or detachment. Apply the army-list and detachment rules for your force rather than treating the Expanded label itself as a restriction.
What do the Achillus and Galatus do?
Games Workshop’s January 2026 preview describes the Contemptor-Achillus as an armour threat, with a spear that deals Damage 3. It describes the Contemptor-Galatus as suited to crowd control, highlighting its warblade, flamer-equipped sword and additional shield durability. The preview does not give a complete profile or points comparison.
Can I take Custodes as Loyalist allies?
A Games Workshop article dated 17 March 2026 describes a Legio Custodes Allied Detachment with a Command slot for a Shield Captain and Troops slots for Custodian and Sentinel Guard Sodalities. Check the current army-list and detachment rules for the full requirements of your game.
Which Custodes Gambits are named in the allied-force article?
The article identifies four special Gambits and names Stone’s Aegis as a defensive example and World Serpent’s Bane as a lethal-strike option. It does not give enough detail here to compare all four or specify their exact timing and effects; consult the current rules.
The Bottom Line
For a Third Edition Legio Custodes force, use Liber Custodes and the Age of Darkness Rulebook as your foundation; use Legacies of the Age of Darkness: Legio Custodes for the selected profiles it adds. “Expanded” does not itself bar a unit. Games Workshop’s preview frames the Achillus as an armour threat and the Galatus as a crowd-control choice, while its March 2026 allied example features a Shield Captain, Guard Sodalities and four special Gambits. Check current profiles and detachment rules for full costs, restrictions and effects.
