1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSome horror games make sound part of the threat: a careless sprint can draw an enemy, a room’s acoustics can reveal its shape, or a voice can seem to circle around your head. These five games stand out for using audio to create tension, communicate space, or shape a character’s experience—not simply to announce a jump scare. This is an editorial selection based on those design qualities, not a measured ranking.
How these games use sound
Sound-led horror can work in several distinct ways. It can give the player actionable information, react to what the player or enemy does, make distance and environment feel legible, express a character’s subjective experience, or control tension between major events. The games below offer different combinations of those qualities; none is presented as objectively “better” than jump scares.

Alien: Isolation makes noise a risk
In Alien: Isolation, sound is not only something the player hears—it can be something the player causes. Creative lead Alistair Hope said the Alien responds to player behavior and movement: sprinting creates noise that can attract it. That turns movement into a stealth decision. Moving quickly may save time, but it can also give the threat a reason to come closer.

Its audio therefore works both as feedback and as a shifting source of uncertainty. In a 2014 interview with PlayStation.Blog, Hope called sound “a huge component” of the game’s horror experience.

- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
SOMA makes its setting audible
SOMA uses sound to distinguish two environments: the underwater world and the air-filled spaces of Pathos-II. Audio director Samuel Justice said the contrast was designed to make the location recognizable even with the visuals turned off. Room size also affects audio content, including the sounds Simon makes, helping the environment feel like a space rather than a static backdrop.
The production choices support that sense of place: the team used hydrophones and contact microphones for underwater recordings, and Simon’s underwater sounds were binaural. Justice described the goal as a strong contrast between soundscapes so players could tell where they were by listening. His account appears in Frictional Games’ behind-the-sound article.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
Dead Space (remake) varies the pressure
The Dead Space remake combines character performance, acoustics, and event pacing. EA’s audio-development account describes its A.L.I.V.E. system as controlling Isaac’s heart rate, breathing, and dialogue delivery. It also details audio occlusion, which changes how sounds are heard through materials and down hallways.

The Intensity Director layers audio, lighting, and events, varying when they occur rather than relying on a fixed sequence of expected scares. Audio director Olivier Asselin explained that repeating or withholding an expected sound can change whether an event feels predictable or surprising. As he put it, the goal is to put the player somewhere “where they don’t know what to expect.” EA’s audio-design article and Intensity Director feature describe these systems.

- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.
The Callisto Protocol makes familiar machinery unsettling
The Callisto Protocol builds unease by altering sounds associated with ordinary machinery and using music as punctuation around events. Director Glen Schofield described those choices in a 2022 PlayStation.Blog interview. The approach makes the environment itself feel suspect: a familiar mechanical noise can carry menace when it is subtly changed or placed at the wrong moment.
Schofield reported “more than 200,000 individual sounds” in the game and “more than 60 unique sounds” for parts of Jacob’s spacesuit. Those are the director’s production figures, not an independent measure of audio quality. They help illustrate the attention paid to sound detail, but the game’s distinctive effect comes from how sounds are used to make a threatening world.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Hellblade II puts the player inside Senua’s hearing
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II uses binaural voices positioned around the player to represent Senua’s auditory experience. Rather than simply locating an external monster, the spatial sound places the player within a character’s perspective, making voice placement central to the atmosphere.
A Game Developer report on principal sound designer Daniele Galante’s 2025 GDC presentation says the effectiveness of binaural audio varies between people and identifies headphones as the best way to experience the design. Headphones are an option for hearing the spatial placement more clearly, not a prerequisite for playing. Read the Game Developer report for details.
