Horizontal Scan Rate: Read Line Timing in Display Specs

Horizontal scan rate counts horizontal line cycles per second in kHz. Learn how it differs from vertical refresh and why it matters for signal compatibility.

Horizontal scan rate is the number of horizontal line cycles a video signal or display repeats each second, usually expressed in kilohertz (kHz). On a CRT, each cycle includes the beam sweeping across a line and returning for the next one. It is a different measurement from vertical refresh or frame rate.

What horizontal scan rate measures

Horizontal scan rate is a frequency: it counts how often the signal completes a horizontal line cycle each second. A rate of 15.75 kHz, for example, means 15,750 cycles per second—not 15,750 visible picture lines. A cycle includes timing for blanking and retrace, so the frequency alone does not reveal how many lines of the picture are visible. Extron’s technical explanation describes the number of lines drawn each second as the horizontal scan rate; the BICSI AV design reference likewise defines it as a frequency measured in kHz.

How the term applies to a CRT

In a cathode-ray tube (CRT), an electron beam sweeps horizontally across the screen to draw a line, then returns to begin the next line. The repeated sweep-and-return timing is the horizontal cycle. This physical beam movement is specific to CRTs.

How it differs from vertical scan rate

Horizontal scan rate counts line cycles per second; vertical scan rate describes how often a field or frame is completed. These figures are related by the video timing, but they are not interchangeable. In interlaced video, two fields—each containing a pass of lines—combine to form one frame, so field rate and frame rate can differ. BICSI’s AV reference discusses this distinction in its treatment of interlaced formats.

  • Horizontal scan rate: line-cycle frequency, typically stated in kHz.
  • Field rate: the number of interlaced line passes per second, stated in Hz.
  • Frame rate: the number of complete pictures per second, stated in Hz.

Historical standard-definition examples

A 2006 BICSI/InfoComm International AV design reference gives these figures for historical standard-definition systems. They describe signal formats, not universal specifications for modern displays.

Signal system Horizontal frequency Interlaced timing in the reference
NTSC 15.75 kHz 60 fields per second; 262.5 scan lines per field; 525 per frame
PAL and SECAM 15.625 kHz 50 fields per second; 312.5 scan lines per field; 625 per frame

The line totals include the signal’s scanning structure; they should not be read as counts of active visible picture lines. The cited reference is a 2006 edition, and these figures are included as format examples rather than current product limits.

Why the term appears in non-CRT display specifications

Horizontal scan rate remains useful when discussing whether a display can accept a signal, even when the device has no CRT beam. Extron notes that computer-to-video conversion changes the computer’s horizontal scan rate to match a television format, and that presentation devices such as LCD or DLP projectors must support the input signal’s timing. For these displays, the term concerns signal compatibility, not an internal electron-beam sweep.

What to check when reading a specification

  • Check horizontal frequency in kHz separately from vertical field or frame rate in Hz.
  • Confirm whether the signal is progressive or interlaced; a field rate is not automatically the same as a frame rate.
  • Distinguish total scan lines from active visible lines.
  • For compatibility, verify that the display accepts the complete signal timing rather than relying on horizontal frequency alone.
