Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYes—if your devices send DNS requests through a resolver such as Pi-hole, you can watch a live log of the domain lookups it handles. But it is not a complete record of every website or connection in your home: it shows only requests that reach that resolver, and privacy settings can limit or anonymize the log.
What a DNS log actually shows
When a device needs to find a domain, it can ask a DNS resolver to look it up. Pi-hole processes those requests and provides a query log; its project materials also list a live log view. The log can help you see which domains are being requested and, depending on your network configuration, which client made each request. Pi-hole’s project overview describes the live-log feature, while its client log documentation explains the query-log entries and controls.

That is narrower than “every website every device has tried to connect to.” A DNS log records queries processed by the resolver, not all network traffic or a definitive browser history. It does not show every connection, and it cannot guarantee that a domain lookup led to a site visit.
How to get a household-wide view
For a network-wide view, clients need to use the computer running Pi-hole as their DNS server. The Pi-hole project’s post-install guidance says to configure the router so DHCP clients use Pi-hole for DNS. Exact router menus vary by model, so look for the router’s LAN or DHCP settings for the DNS server handed to clients. Pi-hole’s README documents this setup.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Run Pi-hole on a compatible host. It can run on suitable Linux hardware; Raspberry Pi is one hardware category mentioned by the project. You may already have a device that can serve as the host, so a separate purchase is optional. Check the project README for the project’s platform and installation information.
- Set the router’s DHCP-provided DNS server to Pi-hole. This is the usual route to having clients on the network send DNS requests to it. The relevant control is in the router’s DHCP or LAN configuration; the exact label depends on the router.
- Open the query log while a device is active. Use the dashboard’s log or live-log view and watch for requests as you reproduce the activity. The client log documentation describes live updates and filtering by client or time, though the interface can differ between tools and versions.
- If the router cannot distribute Pi-hole as DNS, consider Pi-hole DHCP. The project documents using Pi-hole as the DHCP server in that situation, with the router’s DHCP service disabled first. Do not enable two DHCP servers on the same network.
Why devices may be missing or grouped under the router
Two separate questions matter: whether a request reaches Pi-hole at all, and whether Pi-hole can identify the originating device. A device using another DNS path may not appear in Pi-hole’s log. And network equipment that relays or redirects DNS can make the router or gateway appear as the client instead of showing each device separately.
A Pi-hole community support thread illustrates one such configuration: the router was advertising itself as DNS, and a gateway ad-blocking feature redirected DNS requests. The thread author reported that changing that setup restored individual clients in Pi-hole. It is an example, not a universal router fix; the correct settings depend on your network. Read the Pi-hole community troubleshooting case.

- If no expected requests appear, check whether the device is using Pi-hole as its DNS server.
- If requests appear only under the router or gateway, check whether it is acting as a DNS relay or redirecting requests.
- If some activity is absent, remember that the log only covers DNS requests Pi-hole processes; a single resolver’s log is not proof that all devices use it for every lookup.
What you can and cannot infer from the log
A query entry can help identify a requested domain, its time, and—when client attribution is available—the client responsible. It does not establish what page someone viewed, what they did there, or whether a connection completed. Treat it as a troubleshooting and network-visibility tool, not a comprehensive surveillance record.

Pi-hole’s client log documentation says logging can be limited or anonymized, so the amount of detail displayed depends on the configured privacy level.
