If it relies on batteries, dead cells can leave the display blank and stop the thermostat from controlling heating or cooling. If it is wired to AC power, batteries may serve only as backup. Check the exact model and its manual before replacing batteries or assuming the thermostat has failed.
What happens when the batteries run out?
A battery-powered thermostat may first show a low-battery warning. If the batteries become fully depleted, the display can go blank and the thermostat may stop controlling the heating or cooling system. A Honeywell/Resideo manual for the T8131A/B states: “After the batteries are completely dead, the bAt Lo indicator disappears, leaving a completely blank display.” That manual also says the thermostat and heating/cooling system stop working; this describes that model, not every Honeywell thermostat. On a thermostat wired to AC power, batteries may instead be optional backup. Their depletion may affect backup functions rather than immediately shutting off normal operation. The exact effect depends on the model and installation.

The T4 Pro guide says batteries are required when the thermostat is not wired for AC power and optional backup when it is. It also says that at critically low battery power, only battery-alert indicators remain on screen. Read the T4 Pro Series guide.

What the low-battery warning tells you
Warnings vary by model, so do not rely on a particular icon, message, or amount of notice across the Honeywell range. The T4 Pro guide says its low-battery icon appears about two months before depletion; that lead time is guidance for that model, not a brand-wide battery-life estimate. It advises installing fresh batteries immediately when the icon appears.
A manual for a legacy programmable thermostat describes a flashing “bAt Lo” warning before depletion. The T8131A/B manual, by contrast, says its “bAt Lo” indicator disappears once the batteries are completely dead, leaving a blank display. See the 69-0740B manual.

How to replace the batteries safely
- Identify the model. Find the model number on the thermostat or its documentation, then open that model’s owner’s manual. Battery count, size, and replacement steps differ.
- Check the specified battery type and quantity. For example, the T4 Pro guide calls for alkaline AA batteries, while the RTHL111B1001/U1 product specification lists two AAA alkaline batteries. These are examples, not interchangeable or universal requirements. Check the RTHL111B1001/U1 specification.
- Follow the manual’s replacement procedure. For the T4 Pro, the guide describes removing the thermostat from its mount, inserting fresh batteries, and reinstalling it. Other models may have different access and installation steps.
- Check operation. Confirm the display returns, choose a reasonable setpoint, and verify that the heating or cooling system responds.
Some older Honeywell thermostats use three alkaline batteries, with AA or AAA size depending on the model. The manufacturer’s maintenance document says backup batteries can preserve programming and the display during most power outages; a blank display during an outage may mean backup batteries are missing or need replacement. See the thermostat maintenance document, 69-0397.
If the display stays blank or the system does not respond
A battery change does not prove that batteries were the only problem. Check the exact model’s troubleshooting instructions, confirm that the batteries are correctly installed and are the specified type, and verify whether the thermostat requires AC power or a functioning backup supply.

The T87RF/Y87RF guide treats low battery, no power, RF communication error, and defective thermostat as distinct conditions. If fresh batteries do not restore normal operation, use the guide’s troubleshooting steps rather than assuming another battery replacement will resolve it.
