Shokz OpenDots Air is a strong open-ear option if you want a light clip-on fit, awareness of nearby sounds and workout-friendly earbuds without paying the OpenDots 2 launch price. It is not the right pick if you need noise isolation, deep bass or reliably consistent long-session comfort: the open design can be overwhelmed by noise, and reviewers differed on fit and touch controls.
What the OpenDots Air design is—and is not
OpenDots Air uses air conduction, not bone conduction. Each earbud clips around the ear: a flexible nickel-titanium JointArc connects the speaker section at the inner ear ridge to a battery compartment behind the ear, leaving the ear canal unsealed. Shokz describes the design as air conduction combined with DirectPitch technology. Shokz’s product page and FAQ and the user manual provide the design details.

That open fit lets some surrounding sound reach you, but it is not noise cancellation and should not be treated as a safety device. The tradeoff is audible in use: music may be difficult to hear in a loud gym, on a busy street or near other noise, and the earbuds do not provide the isolation of an in-ear seal.

Tom’s Guide found the sound enjoyable for an open-ear design, while noting less bass than in-ear earbuds and music that could be drowned out in loud surroundings. TechRadar likewise reported that noisy environments could overwhelm playback. These are reviewer observations, not a guarantee of how the earbuds will sound to every listener. If you mainly listen in quiet rooms or want music alongside awareness of your surroundings, the tradeoff may suit you; if you want bass-heavy sound or dependable listening in noise, an isolating design is a better match.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Shokz lists four preset EQ modes and two custom profiles in its app. The earbuds have dual AI noise-cancelling microphones per earbud for calls; this refers to microphone processing, not active noise cancellation for what you hear. TechRadar specifically notes that playback has no noise cancellation.
Fit, comfort and controls: reviewer experiences vary
The clip-on format avoids placing a tip in the ear canal, but comfort still depends on how the clip sits on your ear. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer found the design comfortable and convenient with glasses and hats, and reported a secure fit during runs and workouts. TechRadar’s reviewer also reported no fit problem during gym sessions, cycling and running, but experienced some pinching during sessions longer than an hour.

Control feedback was also mixed. Tom’s Guide was more favorable, while TechRadar found the touch controls difficult to activate reliably. If you can, try the fit and controls before committing—especially if you wear them for long sessions or expect to adjust playback frequently while moving.

Is OpenDots Air the more affordable Shokz clip-on?
At launch, the Air was priced below OpenDots 2 in the US and UK figures reported by Tom’s Guide: $129 versus $199 in the US, and £129 versus £179 in the UK. TechRadar listed the Air at $129.95, £129.99 and AU$219. Those are published launch prices from 2026, not a promise of today’s price; check local retailers for current regional pricing.
The price difference is only one part of the choice. Shokz’s product information lists OpenDots 2 with IP57-rated earbuds and wireless charging, while OpenDots Air has IP55-rated earbuds and does not support wireless charging. The models also have different audio feature sets. Compare current prices and the features you actually need rather than assuming the cheaper model is automatically the better value.
