Honda NSX and Acura NSX are not rival cars. They are market names for the same NSX model line: Honda used the NSX badge in Japan and many other markets, while Acura sold it in the United States and other North American markets. The important differences shoppers and enthusiasts usually mean are between the first and second generations, their powertrains, construction, production sites, model-year conventions and special editions.
The original NSX was a mid-engine sports car built around an all-aluminum monocoque. The redesigned second-generation car added a twin-turbocharged V6, three electric motors and Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). The final 2022 NSX Type S increased output again, but its specifications should not be applied to every second-generation NSX.

Honda NSX vs. Acura NSX: the short answer
The badge primarily identifies the sales market, not a different engineering program. Honda introduced the original car in Japan as the NSX and launched it in the United States as the Acura NSX. Honda’s historical timeline records the Acura NSX going on sale in the United States in August 1990 and the NSX going on sale in Japan in September 1990.

When people compare the names, they are usually asking one of three questions:
- Why does the car say Acura in North America but Honda elsewhere?
- How does the original, aluminum-structure NSX differ from the later hybrid NSX?
- Does a published horsepower figure describe a regular second-generation car or the limited Type S?
The sections below separate those issues so the badge, generation and specification questions do not get mixed together.
Why the same car has Honda and Acura badges
Acura was the North American luxury-performance brand
Honda marketed the first-generation car through Acura in the United States. The North American launch therefore used “Acura NSX,” while Honda’s domestic Japanese release used “Honda NSX.” The distinction is commercial and geographic: the manufacturer did not create two unrelated NSX model lines for those markets.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Honda’s timeline places the U.S. sale start in August 1990 and the Japanese sale start in September 1990. Those dates describe national launches, not a difference in when the underlying vehicle was engineered.
Where the Honda badge appeared
Japan used the Honda NSX name. Other markets outside North America generally followed Honda branding, although the exact badge and distribution arrangement depended on the country. A car imported from Japan may therefore be called a Honda NSX even when its mechanical family is familiar to North American readers as the Acura NSX.
What the badge does not tell you
The badge alone does not identify the generation, engine specification, transmission, equipment level or production year. A 1990s Acura NSX and a 2010s Acura NSX share a name but are radically different generations. Likewise, a Honda-badged car is not automatically an earlier model; the second generation also appeared as a Honda in Japan.
The two NSX generations are the meaningful comparison
First generation: 1990 through 2005
The original NSX debuted in 1990 as a mid-engine sports car with an all-aluminum monocoque. Its aluminum construction was a defining engineering choice, intended to reduce mass while providing a rigid passenger structure. Honda built the first generation in Japan from 1990 through 2005.
The first-generation range changed over time, including different engine and transmission configurations. Because equipment and specifications evolved during the 15-year run, “first-generation NSX” is a useful family description rather than a single fixed specification. A listing should be checked by model year, market and transmission instead of assuming every 1990–2005 car is identical.

Honda reported more than 18,000 NSXs sold worldwide by the end of June 2005. That was a cumulative sales figure reported by Honda Motor Co., Ltd. at that date, not a current worldwide total and not a North American-only count.
Second generation: full redesign for the hybrid era
Honda described the successor as a full redesign, using the phrase “undergone a full redesign for the first time in 26 years since the introduction of the original NSX” in an August 25, 2016 release. The Honda version entered the Japanese market in 2016–17, while Acura sold the redesigned car in North America.
The second generation replaced the original car’s architecture with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6, three electric motors and Sport Hybrid SH-AWD. Two electric motors drive the front wheels and a third motor is integrated with the rear drivetrain, allowing the system to combine internal-combustion and electric propulsion. The result is an all-wheel-drive hybrid system rather than the original NSX’s earlier layout.

Production of the second-generation NSX was centered at Honda’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio. The Ohio-built car was supplied globally, so production location no longer followed the first generation’s Japan-only pattern.
Construction and powertrain differences
| Area | Original NSX | Second-generation NSX |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying generation | Introduced in 1990; produced through 2005 | Full redesign introduced for the 2016–17 period, depending on market |
| Structure | All-aluminum monocoque | New-generation structure; the supplied official material does not establish that it used the first generation’s identical aluminum-monocoque specification |
| Engine and motors | Original-generation engine and transmission variants changed during the production run | Twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with three electric motors |
| Drive system | Original-generation layout and equipment varied by version | Sport Hybrid SH-AWD all-wheel drive |
| Regular published output | No single output figure covers every first-generation year and market | 573 combined horsepower and 476 lb-ft of combined torque for the regular 2020 U.S. Acura NSX |
| Final special edition | No equivalent second-generation Type S designation applies to the original generation | 2022 NSX Type S: 600 combined horsepower; limited to 350 units worldwide |
The table’s 573-horsepower and 476-lb-ft figures come from Acura’s published 2020 U.S. model-year specifications. They describe the regular second-generation Acura NSX, not every second-generation car in every country and not the later Type S.
How the second-generation hybrid system changes the car
Turbocharged V6 plus three electric motors
The second-generation powertrain combines a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 with three electric motors. The arrangement gives the car electric assistance and front-axle drive while retaining a mid-engine performance layout. This is the central mechanical break from the original NSX: the successor was conceived as a hybrid all-wheel-drive system rather than an evolution of the first car’s conventional powertrain.
Sport Hybrid SH-AWD
Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is the system name Acura and Honda used for the second-generation all-wheel-drive architecture. Because the front motors can act independently, the system can manage front-wheel torque electronically. The name should not be confused with a trim level or a separate Acura-only model; it identifies the hybrid drive technology used by the redesigned NSX.

Hybrid vehicles can be quoted with combined output, which is not necessarily the arithmetic sum of peak engine and motor ratings. Acura’s 2020 specification lists 573 combined horsepower and 476 lb-ft combined torque. Those numbers should be presented with “combined,” the 2020 model-year designation and the U.S. market attached.

The 2022 NSX Type S is a special case
Higher output and a fixed production cap
Honda’s August 3, 2021 release called the Type S “the final model of the second-generation NSX.” Acura’s 2022 brochure lists 600 combined horsepower and limits production to 350 units worldwide. The 600-horsepower figure therefore belongs specifically to the final Type S edition.
Do not use 600 horsepower as a shorthand for every second-generation NSX. A regular 2020 U.S. Acura NSX is the documented 573-horsepower example in the supplied specifications, while the Type S is a later, limited final edition.
How to identify a Type S claim
- Check that the car is identified as a 2022 NSX Type S, not simply a second-generation NSX.
- Confirm whether the stated output is combined horsepower.
- Look for the production context: 350 units worldwide is the published global cap.
- Separate a Type S specification from the standard model-year specification in advertisements, appraisals and comparison tables.
Where each generation was built
Japan: first-generation production
Honda says the first-generation NSX was built in Japan from 1990 through 2005. A Japan-built original may carry either Honda or Acura branding depending on the market for which it was certified and sold.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Ohio: second-generation production
The second-generation program was centered at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio. Honda supplied that car globally, so an Ohio-built NSX may be sold as an Acura in North America or as a Honda in other markets.
Production location is therefore a generation clue, not a badge clue. “Honda NSX” does not mean Japan-built first generation, and “Acura NSX” does not mean Ohio-built second generation without a model-year check.
Launch date versus model year
NSX history uses two date systems that can look contradictory if they are not labeled. Honda’s historical timeline records the U.S. launch in August 1990. Acura’s North American model-history listing identifies availability as model years 1991–2005. Both can be correct because a vehicle can go on sale during one calendar year as the following model year.
| Date label | What it means | NSX example |
|---|---|---|
| National sale launch | The month and year sales began in a particular country | Acura NSX went on sale in the United States in August 1990; Honda NSX went on sale in Japan in September 1990 |
| Model year | The manufacturer and market’s vehicle-year designation | Acura’s North American history lists the first-generation NSX as model years 1991–2005 |
| Generation introduction | The period when a redesigned model entered a market | Honda describes the second-generation car as entering Japan in 2016–17 |
| Special-edition year | The model year attached to a limited version | 2022 NSX Type S |
When comparing listings, use the exact label supplied by the source. Calling the August 1990 launch a “1990 model year” or calling every 1991–2005 car a 1990 launch car can create an avoidable dating error.

Certification and market equipment
North American and Japanese cars had to meet their respective regulatory and distribution requirements. The supplied historical material establishes the shared model line and the broad generation differences, but it does not establish that every individual component, software setting or equipment package was identical in every country.

For a specific car, verify the market, chassis documentation, original specification sheet and current registration records. Do not infer a complete worldwide equipment match from the badge alone.
Trim and option naming
Trim names, option bundles and published performance figures can be market-specific. A Japanese Honda NSX listing and a U.S. Acura NSX listing may use different terminology even when they describe closely related equipment. Preserve the original market and model-year context when translating or comparing listings.
Left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive context
The badge question does not answer steering position. Steering configuration follows the destination market and the individual vehicle. Buyers importing a car should verify steering side, registration eligibility and local compliance separately from whether the emblem says Honda or Acura.
How to compare an NSX listing correctly
- Record the badge and market. Note Honda or Acura, the country of sale and whether the car is an import.
- Confirm the generation. A 1990–2005 production history points to the original family; the redesigned hybrid belongs to the later generation.
- Write down the model year exactly. Do not substitute a sale-launch date for a model-year label.
- Identify the powertrain. The second generation should be described as the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, three-motor hybrid with Sport Hybrid SH-AWD.
- Check whether it is a Type S. The 2022 Type S is the 600-combined-horsepower, 350-unit worldwide final edition.
- Separate factory facts from modifications. A modified car may not match the published output or equipment of its original specification.
- Verify the source market. Use market-specific documentation before treating a number as universal.
Common comparison mistakes
Mistake: treating Honda and Acura as competing manufacturers
The two badges represent market branding for the NSX line. The useful comparison is not “which brand built the better NSX,” but which generation, model year and market specification a particular car represents.
Mistake: calling every Acura NSX a hybrid
The Acura name spans the original 1990–2005 generation and the later hybrid generation. The badge alone does not identify the three-motor system.
Mistake: applying Type S power to the standard model
600 combined horsepower is the documented 2022 Type S figure. The regular 2020 U.S. model is documented at 573 combined horsepower and 476 lb-ft.
Mistake: presenting launch dates and model years as contradictory
August 1990 is the U.S. sale launch recorded by Honda; 1991–2005 is Acura’s North American model-year range. Labeling each date resolves the apparent conflict.
Mistake: assuming production location from the emblem
The first generation was built in Japan, while second-generation production was centered in Ohio. Either generation can be encountered under Honda or Acura branding depending on destination market.

Which NSX is the right reference for a specification question?
For historical design questions
Use the first-generation description: 1990 introduction, mid-engine layout, all-aluminum monocoque and Japanese production through 2005. Add the model year when discussing engine, transmission or equipment changes.
For hybrid-system questions
Use the second-generation description: full redesign, twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, three electric motors and Sport Hybrid SH-AWD. State whether the car is a standard model or the 2022 Type S.
For horsepower questions
Attach the figure to its exact version. The supplied U.S. 2020 specification is 573 combined horsepower and 476 lb-ft combined torque. The 2022 Type S brochure lists 600 combined horsepower and a 350-unit worldwide production limit.
For provenance questions
Use both the market badge and the build location. A Japanese Honda NSX and an Ohio-built Acura NSX can represent different generations, while a Japan-built first-generation car may have been sold under either badge in its destination market.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Honda NSX usually the Japanese version of an Acura NSX?
Yes, in broad model-line terms. Honda used the NSX name in Japan, while Acura used it in the United States and North America. The exact specification still depends on the individual market and model year.
Did the second-generation NSX replace the original without sharing its exact specification?
Yes. Honda described the later car as a full redesign, and its turbocharged hybrid SH-AWD powertrain is fundamentally different from the original generation’s configuration.
Was every 2022 NSX a Type S?
No. Type S is the final, limited second-generation edition. Its 600 combined horsepower and 350-unit worldwide cap should not be applied to regular NSX cars.

Does “1990 NSX” always mean a 1990 model year?
No. Honda records the U.S. sale launch in August 1990, while Acura’s North American history lists the first-generation range as model years 1991–2005. Always state whether a date is a launch date or model year.
