A reported HomePad setup screen would let users create a Photo Face in the Home app, and the same feature is reportedly being developed for iPhone Duo’s StandBy mode. These details come from leaked screenshots described by 9to5Mac, not an Apple announcement, so the setup flow and feature are not confirmed.
What the reported HomePad setup process would include
In a report published October 1, 2026, 9to5Mac’s Ben Lovejoy said software leaker pdfu shared three screenshots said to show HomePad’s upcoming setup process. The report suggests setup would happen in the Home app and include a step for creating a “Photo Face.”

9to5Mac quoted pdfu’s description: “Setting up Apple’s upcoming Home device includes a new step: creating a Photo Face.” That wording describes a leak, not a feature Apple has publicly confirmed. Read the 9to5Mac report.

How Photo Face would use iCloud Photos
According to 9to5Mac’s account of pdfu’s explanation, Photo Face requires iCloud Photos. During setup, users would be able to select a few high-resolution photos to appear promptly while the rest of their library downloads from iCloud.

- Premium, immersive, high-fidelity audio
The report does not establish how long that download would take, what network conditions or storage limits would apply, or whether the described behavior will remain in a final product. Those implementation details are unverified.
Will HomePad share Photo Face with iPhone Duo?
The leak claims that Photo Face is also coming to StandBy on iPhone Duo. 9to5Mac quoted pdfu: “It’s the same Photo Face coming to StandBy on iPhone Duo.” This is a leaker’s claim reported by 9to5Mac, not confirmation from Apple; the available evidence does not establish either product’s release status or final feature set.

Apple’s Personal Safety User Guide documents existing Home app features: people can view and control Home accessories using the Home app on iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or through HomePod. It also explains how to remove someone from a shared Home or leave one. That established Home functionality does not verify HomePad, Photo Face, the leaked screenshots, or an iPhone Duo StandBy feature. Apple Personal Safety User Guide.

9to5Mac said an October 13, 2026 launch was expected, but the cited evidence does not make that an official Apple date. Treat it as a reported expectation, not a confirmed launch schedule.
