A home SOC is a security-monitoring lab built from tools that collect and help interpret endpoint and network evidence. For a first setup focused on a few laptops, a desktop, or a NAS, Wazuh’s all-in-one deployment is a manageable starting point. Choose Security Onion when you specifically want network alerts, protocol metadata, packet capture, and an integrated investigation workflow—and can provide suitable hardware and a traffic feed.
Neither platform automatically sees everything on a home network or guarantees professional-grade monitoring or protection. Your goal, traffic source, available hardware, and willingness to maintain the system determine what a useful setup looks like.

What a home SOC does—and does not do
A security operations center (SOC) brings together evidence, detection, and investigation workflows. At home, that usually means a lab that collects activity from devices or network traffic so you can learn to spot and investigate events. It is a practical learning and monitoring setup, not a promise of comprehensive visibility or professional-grade protection.
The important distinction is between endpoint visibility—what monitored devices report—and network visibility—what a sensor can observe in traffic. These are different evidence sources. A single alert is a clue, not a complete account of what happened.

| Question | Wazuh | Security Onion |
|---|---|---|
| Primary fit | Endpoint security data collection, analysis, alerting, and visualization | Integrated network and host visibility, intrusion detection, log management, and case handling |
| How it gathers evidence | Agents send endpoint data to a server; network devices without an agent can send logs by Syslog or SSH | Network tools analyze traffic; Elastic Agent and Osquery provide endpoint data collection and live queries |
| Investigation capabilities | Server analysis and dashboard for alerts and visualization | Alerts, Dashboards, Hunt, Cases, and PCAP interfaces |
| Useful first question | What security events are happening on my enrolled devices? | What is happening on the network, and what traffic evidence can help me investigate it? |
Wazuh: start with devices and logs
In Wazuh’s documented architecture, agents collect and forward endpoint security data to the Wazuh server. The server analyzes the data and forwards it to the indexer; the dashboard provides alerting and visualization. Devices that cannot run an agent can still contribute logs through Syslog or SSH. That makes Wazuh a practical path for learning enrollment and endpoint alert triage.
Wazuh’s all-in-one installation is explicitly intended for labs and small environments. Its quickstart calls Wazuh “free and open source.” The phrase describes the project’s own documentation, not an independent endorsement. See the Wazuh quickstart and Wazuh architecture documentation.

Security Onion: add network evidence and investigation tools
Security Onion combines network visibility, host visibility, intrusion detection, honeypots, log management, and case management. Its network layer uses Suricata for signature-based alerts and Zeek or Suricata for network metadata; it also supports packet capture and file analysis. Elastic Agent and Osquery provide endpoint data collection and live queries, with centralized management through Elastic Fleet.
Security Onion’s documentation describes the platform as “a free and open platform built by defenders for defenders.” That is the project’s characterization. Its tools serve different investigative roles: a Suricata alert flags traffic matching suspicious patterns, while packet capture can preserve traffic for later review. Zeek’s event pipeline analyzes packets, sessions, and files, and its scripts can encode local security policy and track state over time. That metadata may help explain surrounding activity an alert alone does not describe. Read the Security Onion documentation and Zeek 8.2.1 documentation.

- One Unified Security System, Powered by 1st-Gen aosuBase: 32GB of local storage comes ready to use, holding about 120 days of loop recording. No subscription required. Connect up to 4 cameras to one base with a stable wireless connection and centralized local storage. Recordings saved to aosuBase are event-based, triggered by detected activity.
- Multi-Cam Live View for All-at-Once Monitoring: Watch up to four live camera feeds simultaneously in the aosu app and monitor multiple areas on one screen without opening each camera individually. Live View is available through the aosu app only; the base does not support HDMI or TV output.
- 360° Coverage with Pan, Tilt, and Smart Auto Tracking: Pan and tilt to see all around your property. When activity is detected, the camera automatically follows people and other movement to keep the action in view while recording, giving you a more complete view of what happens around your home.
- 2K (3MP) Clarity with Full-Color Night Vision: Capture clear details in 2K and zoom in up to 6x for a closer look. Built-in spotlights enable full-color night vision, helping you see important color details like clothing and vehicles after dark. For more discreet monitoring, switch to infrared mode for black-and-white night vision without visible lighting.
- Quick Setup with a Pre-Paired System: Connect aosuBase to your router's LAN port with the included Ethernet cable. Cameras connect wirelessly to aosuBase instead of your home Wi-Fi. The system comes pre-paired, so simply power on the cameras and complete setup in the app without pairing each camera one by one. The cameras are designed to work with the included aosuBase, and add-on cameras connect through the base as well.
Network-only inspection has limits, particularly when traffic is encrypted. Endpoint telemetry can add evidence that is not visible from inspecting network traffic alone; it does not make every event observable.
Choose according to your goal
Start with Wazuh for a small endpoint lab
Choose Wazuh first if your priority is monitoring a few computers or storage devices, learning agent enrollment, and reviewing endpoint alerts from one host. This keeps the initial scope focused. You can decide later whether network monitoring would answer questions your endpoint data cannot.

Consider Security Onion for network monitoring
Choose Security Onion if you want to learn network alerts, protocol metadata, packet capture, and a more integrated investigation workflow. Its Evaluation architecture supports temporary testing, but Evaluation mode is described as a quick test setup rather than a production design. For live network monitoring, Security Onion documents a sniffing interface connected to a TAP or a switch’s SPAN (port-mirroring) feed. Installing the software alone does not give it visibility into all household traffic.

Compare the actual workload, not just product names
- Coverage: Which endpoints can run agents, and do you need network traffic evidence too?
- Traffic feed: Can you provide a TAP or SPAN feed to a sensor?
- Compute and storage: What can your host handle at the intended traffic rate, with the retention you want?
- Operations: How much installation, tuning, and maintenance are you prepared to do?
- Purpose: Is this a learning lab, temporary evaluation, or ongoing household monitoring?
Wazuh and Security Onion can be complementary in principle, but running both is not automatically necessary or simple. Start with the evidence source that matches your first question; add another layer only when you have a clear reason and can support its workload.

Plan hardware around the deployment
Official sizing figures are planning guidance, not performance guarantees, and the two projects’ tables describe different workloads. Wazuh’s figures are tied to agent counts and indexed alert retention; Security Onion’s include network traffic processing. The official pages reviewed do not state publication years, so the figures below should be checked against the current installation guidance before deployment.
| Platform and scenario | Documented planning guidance |
|---|---|
| Wazuh all-in-one, 1–25 agents | 4 vCPU, 8 GiB RAM, 50 GB storage for 90 days of indexed alerts, per Wazuh quickstart |
| Wazuh all-in-one, 51–100 agents | 8 vCPU, 8 GiB RAM, 200 GB storage for 90 days of indexed alerts, per Wazuh quickstart |
| Security Onion VM evaluation | 12 GB RAM minimum, per Security Onion hardware guidance |
| Security Onion small-network production guidance | 16 GB RAM or more, per Security Onion hardware guidance |
| Security Onion fully saturated 1 Gbps monitored link running Suricata and Zeek | At least five workers for each engine—ten CPU cores for those workers before other services—per Security Onion hardware guidance |
The Wazuh figures are for its stated agent tiers and 90-day indexed-alert scenario; they are not a sizing promise for every integration or workload. Security Onion’s CPU guidance illustrates how demands can rise with traffic and with the services processing it. Packet capture and indexed metadata also consume storage. The Security Onion hardware guidance explains its requirements and deployment considerations.
What to check in a small server or mini PC
A small lab server or mini PC can be a reasonable host category, especially if memory and SSD storage can be upgraded. Select hardware only after deciding which platform and deployment you intend to run. Check the processor, memory, storage capacity and retention needs, and network interfaces against the official requirements and your expected load. No particular mini PC can be assumed to handle Security Onion or a full-speed link without validating those details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you want a live network feed, a managed switch with port mirroring or a network TAP may be relevant infrastructure. Security Onion names TAP or SPAN as traffic sources, but compatibility depends on the equipment and setup; the platform does not create the feed for you.
A practical first-build sequence
- Write down the first question you want to answer. For endpoint alerts on a few devices, begin with Wazuh. For network traffic investigation, plan around Security Onion and a suitable feed.
- Count the evidence sources. List devices that can run agents, devices that can forward logs, and whether a TAP or SPAN feed is available for network monitoring.
- Check the host against the intended role. Use the relevant project’s current requirements, accounting for storage and retention as well as CPU and memory.
- Install and validate one layer at a time. Confirm that expected endpoint data or network traffic is reaching the platform before adding more components.
- Practice investigation, not just installation. Learn how an alert is generated, what evidence accompanies it, and how to decide whether it merits further attention.
For installation details, follow the Wazuh quickstart or Security Onion’s architecture documentation and Evaluation guide. Hardware needs and software documentation can change, so confirm the current guidance for the version and deployment you choose.
