What to include in a long-term cost comparison
Choose an ownership period, such as five years, and compare real devices that can meet the same viewing needs. Add the one-time setup costs and recurring costs for each option rather than comparing only purchase prices.

- Equipment and setup: device, screen, mount, installation, and any external audio or streaming equipment you actually need.
- Maintenance: replacement lamps and filters, plus likely service or labor costs.
- Electricity: operating power, expected viewing hours, and your local price per kilowatt-hour.
- Use and image needs: target image size, room lighting, and the brightness mode you expect to use.
Epson’s Singapore total-cost calculator includes electricity for laser models and electricity, lamps, filters, and labor for lamp models. It treats the result as an estimate because use patterns, projection environment, and maintenance affect actual costs: Epson’s projector TCO calculator.
When the projector setup can cost more
The projector itself is only part of the setup. If you need to buy a screen, add a mount or installation, or control ambient light, include those costs. LG’s UAE comparison notes that fixed-frame and ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screens add expense; it describes projectors as most suitable when a large image is the priority and the room is dark or controlled. For everyday viewing in a bright room, a TV may require fewer additions and provide more consistent performance. That does not establish that every TV costs less: compare the actual screen size, capabilities, and setup you want.
How lamp and laser projectors differ in maintenance
Lamp models
Estimate how many lamps you could use during the ownership period by dividing expected viewing hours by the model’s rated lamp life. Then check the price and exact compatibility of replacement lamps, and account for any likely labor or filter service. Rated lamp life and replacement cost vary by model and operating mode.

As one UK example, Selectra’s 2026 comparison lists an approximately £80 replacement lamp for the Epson EH-TW6250, rated for 4,500 hours in normal mode or 7,500 hours in eco mode. Laser models
A laser light source avoids routine lamp changes within its rated life, but that is not a guarantee of the projector’s total lifespan or freedom from all service costs. Panasonic says its laser light sources typically provide 20,000 hours of maintenance-free operating life, at which point output is around 50%; other parts may need replacement sooner, and conditions affect lifetime. Panasonic’s PT-REZ12 example illustrates how operating mode changes both power and light-source performance: ECO mode extends the time to 50% light output from 20,000 to 24,000 hours, reduces on-mode consumption from 850 W to 650 W, and saves 1,400 kWh through that period under Panasonic’s stated conditions. The company says actual replacement times vary, so those figures should not be generalized to other projectors.
Estimate electricity for your own viewing
Use the stated power draw for the operating mode that matches your expected brightness, rather than assuming every device in a category uses the same amount.

Build the comparison step by step
- Set the period. Choose how long you expect to own each setup, and use the same period for both.
- Select comparable candidates. Match the image size and capabilities you actually want, rather than comparing cost per inch alone.
- Price the complete setup. Add the device, screen if needed, mount, installation, and any external equipment required.
- Estimate maintenance. For a lamp projector, use expected hours and the model’s rated life to estimate replacement needs, then verify compatible-part prices. For a laser projector, consider model-specific warranty and service support rather than treating rated source life as whole-device life.
- Calculate electricity. Apply the formula above to each device’s relevant operating-mode wattage, your viewing hours, and your tariff.
- Add the costs over the ownership period. Keep one-time setup costs separate from recurring electricity and maintenance so it is clear what drives the difference.
Which one is likely to cost less for you?
A TV is more likely to be the lower-cost practical choice when you watch in a bright room and a projector would require a separate screen, light-control measures, or installation. A projector may make sense when a very large image is the priority and you already have suitable room conditions—or when you are willing to include the screen and setup in the budget. A lamp model’s replacement costs and either device’s electricity use can change the comparison. No universal whole-life cost winner is established; the answer comes from the actual models, setup, use, and local tariff.
