Neither a home battery nor a generator is best for every outage. A battery suits quiet, automatic backup for selected circuits and may recharge from solar if the system is designed to operate during a grid outage. A fuel-burning generator can keep supplying power while fuel is available, but it needs safe outdoor placement, fuel planning and a safe electrical connection. Choose by the loads you need to run, expected outage length, available fuel or solar, installation limits and budget.

How much of your home can each option power?

Start with the appliances and circuits you need during an outage, not the number of rooms in your house. A system’s output, measured in watts, determines what it can run at once; its energy capacity, measured in kilowatt-hours for batteries, helps determine how long it can run. Starting surges from some appliances can also exceed their normal running demand, so check both requirements against equipment ratings.

Home batteries: configured circuits, not automatically the whole house

Most home batteries supply the circuits configured for backup, rather than every circuit in the home. A battery system’s power output must cover the combined demand of appliances running at the same time, while its stored energy determines how long that demand can be sustained. High-draw equipment such as air conditioning or space heaters can use stored energy quickly.

PG&E describes a typical backup sequence in which the system safely disconnects the home from the grid, turns on automatically and supplies backed-up circuits. Ask the installer which circuits are included and what loads they can support.

Generators: selected appliances or a larger share of the home

A portable generator can temporarily run a few key appliances, such as a refrigerator, lights and fans, according to the EPA. A permanently installed standby system may serve more of the home and can automate startup, but its actual capability depends on system sizing and installation. Portable units generally involve more hands-on setup.

For either type, compare rated and starting watts with the loads you plan to run. A portable unit’s fuel type and the generator’s electrical arrangement also determine how you can use it safely; a generator connected to household wiring requires an approved means of preventing power from flowing back to utility lines.

How long will backup power last?

Battery runtime depends on stored energy and load

Battery runtime is shaped by usable stored energy, the demand of the backed-up circuits, reserve settings and the ability to recharge. Running fewer loads or reducing high-draw use can stretch a battery’s stored energy. A battery used for time-of-use bill savings may reserve less energy for outages unless its reserve setting is raised.

Solar can extend backup only when the system is designed to operate during an outage and there is enough sunlight. Many solar systems shut down during a grid outage to avoid energizing a de-energized utility line; some can island and supply some or all home loads. Confirm outage operation with your installer and utility rather than assuming that panels will recharge a battery when the grid is down. PG&E says many home batteries last about 10 to 15 years, but actual service life depends on the product and how it is used.

Generator runtime depends on fuel and replenishment

A generator can provide backup for as long as fuel is available, as the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) puts it. In practice, runtime is constrained by fuel consumption, how heavily the generator is loaded, available stored fuel and the ability to replenish it. Fuel storage, refueling, maintenance, noise and local air-quality rules all matter for an extended outage.

For multiday outages, do not assume a standard tank will be enough. RMI managing director Mark Dyson told the Associated Press that standard fuel-tank designs are no longer sufficient for the multiday outages increasingly seen with extreme weather.

What changes during a several-day outage?

Over several days, the key question is how the system will sustain the loads that matter, not just whether it can start them. A battery without dependable solar recharge has a finite supply of stored energy; a generator needs a continuing, safe fuel supply. Either choice can require load management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • With a battery: Prioritize essential circuits, consider how high-demand appliances affect runtime, and verify the outage reserve setting. If you expect solar recharge, confirm that the system can island and operate during a grid outage.
  • With a generator: Plan fuel storage and replenishment, refueling and maintenance, and account for local restrictions. A standby generator may automate startup, but automation does not remove the need for fuel planning.
  • With either system: Match the equipment to likely outage conditions. As UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health associate professor Noah Kittner told the Associated Press, “different conditions are going to require different elements, like a heat wave versus a hurricane.”

Safety, installation and local rules

Portable generators must run outdoors

Fuel-powered portable generators produce carbon monoxide. Run them outdoors and far from buildings; never run one inside a home or garage, or close to doors, windows, vents, balconies or sleeping areas. Follow the manufacturer’s placement and operating instructions, and check local noise, emissions and fuel-storage rules. The EPA notes that battery-powered or solar power stations do not emit toxic fumes, but are often less powerful than conventional fuel generators.

Household wiring needs protection against backfeed

Never connect a generator to another power source, including utility lines. A generator supplying household wiring needs a safe, approved arrangement that prevents electricity from flowing back to the grid. Check with your utility and local electrical authority about requirements, and use qualified professionals for the connection and any transfer equipment. Approval requirements can vary by jurisdiction.

Battery systems need appropriate installation

A home battery is installed electrical equipment. Discuss system placement, electrical work and outage operation with a qualified installer; do not remove or disconnect the battery yourself. A UK government review published October 2, 2020, described failure modes and mitigations for domestic lithium-ion storage and said few such fires were publicly known at that time. That historical review is not a current incident-rate estimate.

How do purchase and installed costs compare?

Published figures are broad orientation, not like-for-like quotes. The CPUC’s California consumer FAQ gives batteries at $5,000 to more than $7,000 for the battery and says a whole installed battery system may cost $7,000 to more than $20,000 depending on size and type; it gives generators at $500 to more than $10,000 depending on size. These ranges cover different scopes and are not a direct cost comparison.

Ask whether each quote covers the same circuits, starting loads, expected outage duration and degree of automation. No verified figure directly compares the cost per outage or equivalent household runtime for the two categories; check current local pricing and incentives before deciding.

Which option fits your household?

Consideration Home battery Generator
Best fit Quiet, automatic backup for configured circuits; solar may recharge during outages if the system supports it. Longer supply while fuel remains available; portable models can serve selected appliances, while standby systems may automate startup.
Duration constraint Stored energy, load, reserve setting and outage-capable solar recharge. Fuel supply, consumption, replenishment, maintenance and local rules.
Noise and exhaust No toxic fumes from battery-powered systems, according to the EPA. Fuel-burning portable generators produce carbon monoxide and must be operated outdoors and far from buildings.
Installation consideration Installed electrical equipment; confirm backed-up circuits and outage operation. House wiring requires safe anti-backfeed arrangements; portable use requires safe placement and fuel planning.
Cost evidence California CPUC FAQ: $7,000 to more than $20,000 for a whole installed battery system; AP (July 14, 2026): solar-plus-battery installation at least $20,000. California CPUC FAQ: generators $500 to more than $10,000 depending on size; AP (July 14, 2026): whole-house systems $5,000 to $20,000 or more.

Lean toward a battery if quiet operation, automatic backup and solar integration are priorities, and the circuits you need fit the system’s capacity. Lean toward a generator if you need sustained power beyond a battery’s stored energy and can safely site it, meet local requirements and manage fuel. A standby generator and a portable unit involve different installation and operating trade-offs, so compare the specific configurations you are considering.
