When I couldn’t make the automation I wanted work the way I needed, I linked Home Assistant to Node-RED—a flow-based tool that lets you connect triggers, logic, and actions as nodes.
The exact automation and its working flow aren’t specified here, so this is not a step-by-step recreation of a particular setup. The useful takeaway is how to decide whether Node-RED fits, how its Home Assistant connection is provided, and how to identify the right event before building a flow.

Home Assistant automation is capable; the friction can be in the workflow
Home Assistant automations respond to events and perform actions. Its visual editor is designed to let people create them without writing code, and Home Assistant recommends starting with blueprints if you are new to automation. That makes Node-RED an alternative way to build a workflow—not a prerequisite for using Home Assistant.

That is a statement about my use case, not proof that Home Assistant cannot perform the same task. Before moving an automation elsewhere, it is worth checking whether a different trigger, condition, action, helper, or blueprint makes it straightforward in Home Assistant.

What linking Node-RED to Home Assistant means
Node-RED represents automations as flows: nodes receive or react to information, pass it through logic, and send actions onward. The node-red-contrib-home-assistant-websocket project provides Node-RED nodes for communicating with Home Assistant. Its documentation lists installation through Node-RED’s Manage Palette interface or npm, and says the Home Assistant community add-on includes the nodes.
The project’s package listing showed version 0.81.0 in 2026, with requirements of Node.js v20 or later, Node-RED v3.1.1 or later, and Home Assistant v2024.3 or later. These are version-specific requirements, not timeless minimums; check the project’s current documentation against your installed versions before setting it up.

The Companion component is separate
The Node-RED Companion repository describes an additional Home Assistant-side component that complements the WebSocket nodes. It documents installation through HACS or by manually placing the component in custom_components, followed by a Home Assistant restart. It is not established as a requirement for every flow; whether you need it depends on the feature you intend to use.
Identify the right Home Assistant event before building a flow
Home Assistant’s event bus carries signals that something happened. For example, calling an action such as light.turn_on produces a call_service event; if the light entity changes state, Home Assistant then produces a state_changed event. Those are distinct points in the sequence, and listening for one is not the same as listening for the other.
| What you want to detect | Home Assistant trigger concept |
|---|---|
| An entity’s state or attributes change | State changed |
| A named event on Home Assistant’s internal event bus | Manual event received |
| A physical signal represented by an event entity, such as a remote’s press or double press | Event received |
Home Assistant distinguishes Event received from Manual event received: the former listens to event entities that represent momentary physical signals, while the latter listens for named events on the internal event bus. The trigger documentation covers these options.
Inspect the event and its data
Before reproducing behavior in a Node-RED flow, use Home Assistant’s developer tools to listen for events and inspect their data. Confirm the event type and payload produced by the action or device you care about. Do not assume an event name or payload based only on what a button, light, or automation appears to do.

What a reproducible Node-RED setup needs to show
A working account of this automation would need to identify what starts the flow, what conditions it checks, and what actions it performs. It should also name the configured nodes and show the relevant entity IDs or event data, with private details removed. Without those specifics, there is no reliable way to recreate the original flow or determine exactly why the native editor was inconvenient in this case.

Once the flow is built, test the trigger and each branch against the actual event data, then confirm that the intended Home Assistant action occurs. Document restart behavior and what happens when either Home Assistant or Node-RED is unavailable only if those behaviors have been verified for the setup.
