The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Minecraft, and Elden Ring offer different versions of that freedom—not the same kind of open-world experience.
Choose by the kind of exploration you want
| If you want… | Start with… | What its publisher describes | The tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| To pick a direction and explore the terrain | The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild | Nintendo describes surveying the land, choosing destinations, and setting your own route through the wilderness. | There is still an overarching quest; freedom to choose your route does not mean there are no objectives. |
| A story framework with room to wander | The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | Bethesda describes pursuing the main quest or leaving the path for places such as catacombs, with optional quests and exploration. | Its quests and story framework may feel more directed than a sandbox. |
| To make your own activities and goals | Minecraft | Mojang says the game has no set goal; Survival mode includes exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and fighting monsters. | You provide more of your own structure. |
| To explore a mysterious setting with combat along the way | Elden Ring | Bandai Namco describes connected landscapes and dungeons, with spirit or other-player assistance available during exploration. | The publisher’s description establishes combat and adversaries, not a low-pressure or relaxing pace. |
Games for different kinds of self-directed play
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: choose a route through the world
Breath of the Wild is the best fit if your idea of exploration is spotting a distant landmark, deciding to head there, and seeing what you encounter en route. Nintendo describes climbing towers and mountain peaks to look for destinations, surveying the land, then setting out on a chosen path through the wilderness. That makes the freedom primarily about how you move through the world, rather than an absence of goals. The game still has a quest to protect Hyrule. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: wander without abandoning the story
Skyrim suits players who want an RPG with a recognizable main quest but do not want to follow it every time they play. Bethesda presents the choice as either pursuing the main quest or stepping off the path to explore a winding catacomb and build your character’s legend at your own pace. It is a quest-rich world, so its freedom means choosing among story, side paths, and other activities—not supplying every goal yourself. (Bethesda’s Skyrim overview.)

If a main story feels like a distraction, Minecraft is the clearest sandbox choice in this group. Mojang says there is no set goal and that players can play as they like. In Survival mode, exploration sits alongside collecting resources, crafting, fighting monsters, and gaining experience. The appeal is that you decide what to build or pursue; the tradeoff is that the game gives you less prescribed direction than a conventional story-led RPG. (Minecraft’s overview.)
#1 Best Overall
Elden Ring: explore between combat encounters
Elden Ring is a fit if discovery in a mysterious fantasy setting is appealing and combat is part of the draw, rather than an interruption you want to avoid. Bandai Namco describes connected landscapes and complex dungeons, and notes that players can summon spirits or other players to help while exploring. The available official description does not establish that the experience is relaxed or low-stress, so it is not the safest starting point if avoiding combat pressure is your priority. (Bandai Namco’s official website.)
What “at your own pace” means in practice
Open-world freedom can describe several different things. Breath of the Wild emphasizes choosing a route; Skyrim lets you alternate between the main quest and off-path exploration; Minecraft asks you to create much of your own structure; and Elden Ring pairs exploration with recurring combat. These distinctions matter more than the label “open world” if you are trying to avoid a game that feels too directed, too unstructured, or too combat-focused.

- Available Now - Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a new cooperative multiplayer experience inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology.
- Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Uncover the hidden wonders of Tsushima in this open-world action adventure.
- The rise of the Ghost: Forge a new path and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.
- Choose Breath of the Wild if landmarks and self-chosen routes sound more appealing than following a fixed sequence of destinations.
- Choose Skyrim if you want optional wandering within a world that still supplies quests and a central story.
- Choose Minecraft if making your own plans is the point, rather than a lack of direction you need the game to solve.
- Consider Elden Ring if exploration and combat belong together for you; the cited publisher material does not establish it as a low-combat alternative.
Check platform and edition details before buying
Availability, edition contents, price, and accessibility options can vary by platform and region. Nintendo’s official page identifies Breath of the Wild for Switch, but current retailer stock and pricing are not established here. Bethesda describes Skyrim Anniversary Edition as including the core game, the Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn add-ons, plus Creation Club content; confirm the current platform and regional listing before relying on that bundle description. For all four games, check the store page for your platform and region for current editions, prices, accessibility details, and availability. (Nintendo; Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition page.)
