A Home Assistant entity can keep its last numeric reading after its device or connection stops delivering useful data. Before an automation takes a consequential action, check that the entity has a usable state and that its update timestamp is recent enough for that sensor’s normal reporting cadence. A timestamp is a useful signal, but it does not prove that a new physical measurement was taken.
Why an automation can act on stale sensor data
A sensor entity’s displayed value can remain numeric even when new reports have stopped. If an automation responds to another event and reads that retained value, it may act as though the reading is current. Home Assistant’s state object includes a last_updated timestamp, which changes when the state or attributes change. Some integrations count every report as a change even when the reported state and attributes are identical; others may not. So timestamp age is only a reliable freshness proxy when the integration updates the entity as relevant reports arrive. Home Assistant’s state-object documentation describes these timestamp semantics.

Put a freshness guard before the action
For an automation that should react to a sensor change but act only when the reading is fresh, use the sensor event as the trigger and a freshness check as a condition before the action. The check should reject invalid states first, then compare the age of the entity’s last_updated value with a maximum age chosen for that sensor.

state is neither "unknown" nor "unavailable", and now minus last_updated is less than the chosen maximum age
In a real configuration, use the entity’s actual ID and a threshold suited to its reporting interval. Do not copy a generic number of minutes: the right window depends on how often that integration updates the entity and on the consequences of acting on old data. Check the current Home Assistant UI or documentation when translating this pattern into YAML, since the exact configuration depends on the automation and entity.
Reject invalid states explicitly
Do not treat unknown or unavailable as numeric readings. Home Assistant documents that numeric state conditions do not pass when an entity is in either state. The automation troubleshooting documentation explains this behavior. An explicit validity check also makes the intent clear: the action needs a usable reading, not merely an entity that exists.

Set the age limit from the sensor’s cadence
Consider how frequently useful reports are expected, whether reports can be delayed in normal operation, and how costly a stale-data action would be. A short window can reject delayed-but-valid updates; a long one can allow old data through. Home Assistant’s official documentation does not specify a universally correct freshness interval, so choose and explain the threshold for the specific sensor and use case.

A trigger reacts to an event; a condition checks a snapshot after that event. As Home Assistant’s automation documentation puts it, “A condition checks the current state once, right after a trigger reacts.” Conditions do not wait for the state to become true later. How automations react to changes explains this timing.

| Goal | Pattern | Timing caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Act on a sensor change only when its reading is fresh | Use the sensor’s state change as the trigger and apply the freshness condition before the action. | The condition is evaluated when the trigger fires; it will not wake later just because the reading ages. |
| Detect that a sensor has gone quiet | Use a time-based or template-based mechanism that re-evaluates age, such as a template trigger. | Template triggers re-evaluate when referenced entities change. A template with no entity reference is evaluated once per minute. |
| Require a state to remain true for a duration | Use a for wait where its restart behavior is acceptable. |
Home Assistant resets pending for intervals on restart or automation reload. An input_datetime is an option when the waiting period must survive those events. |
See Home Assistant’s automation trigger documentation and template integration documentation for the relevant trigger, template, and wait behavior.

A stale-data alert and a recovery response are separate behaviors. Most entity-targeted triggers do not react to transitions from unknown or unavailable; the general state trigger does. If your automation should notify when data returns, or resume an action after recovery, account for that transition explicitly rather than assuming the ordinary entity trigger will catch it. Home Assistant documents the distinction in its trigger guidance.

- [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
- [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
- [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
- [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
- [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
Check the integration before trusting the timestamp
- Confirm that the entity’s
last_updatedadvances when the relevant sensor report arrives. Its meaning depends on how the integration represents incoming reports. - Decide what the automation should do when the state is invalid or exceeds the allowed age: skip the action, notify, or take another safe path.
- If you need to detect silence, ensure the chosen mechanism evaluates again as time passes; a condition alone does not schedule another check.
- If a pending duration must survive a restart or automation reload, do not rely on a
forwait alone.
A Home Assistant Community question phrases the underlying problem as a sensor that “hasn’t updated for x time.” That is the key distinction: if the requirement is to detect silence, build a mechanism that checks elapsed time, not merely one that checks state when some unrelated event happens. The community discussion uses that phrasing for this kind of automation.
