If Home Assistant seems like too much work, first decide whether you want an easier way to run Home Assistant or a different smart-home platform. Home Assistant Green is the project’s preconfigured appliance; Google Home, Apple Home, and dedicated hubs such as Homey are alternatives for households whose devices already fit those ecosystems. The simplest choice depends on the devices and protocols you own, how much automation control you need, and which app your household will actually use.
Do you need a Home Assistant alternative—or an easier setup?
Home Assistant’s official FAQ estimates about 15 minutes for basic onboarding, then another 30 to 60 minutes for first integrations and a dashboard. For a custom installation on a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, or virtual machine, it estimates one to two hours. These are Home Assistant’s estimates, not independent setup tests, and the FAQ does not state a publication date.

If the main obstacle is sourcing a host computer or installing the software, Home Assistant Green is the lower-effort route: it is a plug-and-play hub with Home Assistant already installed. It is not a different platform, and some setups may still need optional radio hardware for protocols their equipment does not otherwise support.

Home Assistant says, “Whenever there is a local alternative, Home Assistant prefers it.” That describes the project’s stated preference, not a promise that every integration or device works locally. The FAQ notes that local-protocol devices—including Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome devices—can operate without internet, while remote access and some voice integrations still use cloud services.

How to choose a simpler smart-home platform
Before choosing a replacement, make an inventory of the devices you already own. A platform that is easy for a few compatible lights can become difficult if the rest of the home depends on different radios, manufacturer bridges, or cloud accounts.
- Setup and upkeep: A preconfigured hub or familiar phone app can avoid installing a host computer. Pairing devices, applying updates, and troubleshooting remain part of running any smart-home system.
- Exact device compatibility: Check each device’s model and required connection—Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or a vendor bridge. A shared protocol label does not guarantee that every feature will work in every app.
- Local and internet-dependent functions: Find out which actions work on your home network and which rely on a manufacturer’s or platform’s cloud. Do not assume that a platform’s local-control capability covers every device.
- Automation needs: If you mainly want straightforward scenes, a familiar ecosystem may be sufficient. More complex rules across mixed devices may call for a more configurable setup. The sources cited here do not provide a like-for-like automation benchmark.
- Household interface: Consider the phones, voice assistant, and apps people in the household already use. A familiar interface can matter more to daily simplicity than the number of protocols a hub lists.
Alternatives to consider
Home Assistant Green: the easier Home Assistant route
Choose Green if you want Home Assistant’s platform but would rather not assemble or configure a separate host computer. The software comes installed, but you still choose and set up integrations and devices. Consult the official Green page for appliance and optional hardware details; check whether your particular setup needs an additional radio adapter.

Google Home or Apple Home: app-first control
These are candidates when your existing devices are compatible with the ecosystem and you value a familiar app or voice assistant. Matter can help compatible devices work across multiple certified smart-home apps: Google’s Matter setup guidance explains multi-platform control and network requirements. For Matter over Thread, a Thread border router is required. Matter does not guarantee that every app exposes every device feature, so verify support for the functions you actually use.
Homey: a dedicated hub for varied protocols
Homey is worth considering when your home spans several device standards and you want a dedicated hub. Its documentation lists Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other technologies, but broad protocol support is not universal device compatibility. Confirm the exact Homey model or generation and your device support before choosing it.

- Matter + Zigbee Smart Home Hub: Supports the newest Matter standard plus Zigbee for lighting, sensors, plugs, switches, thermostats, and more - thousands of compatible devices. PLEASE NOTE: Z-Wave not supported

Homey’s Matter setup instructions, dated July 29, 2026, describe pairing prerequisites. If you bridge Zigbee devices from Homey into Matter, those devices remain connected to Homey; the standardized features exposed through Matter may be narrower than the devices’ native features. See Homey’s explanations of Zigbee devices with Apple Home and Zigbee devices via Matter.

| Your priority | Option to examine | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Home Assistant but avoid installing it on your own computer | Home Assistant Green | It comes with Home Assistant installed; optional radio hardware may be needed for your devices. |
| Use a familiar ecosystem app and compatible devices | Google Home or Apple Home | Check exact device and feature support; Matter does not make every feature available in every app. |
| Bring several device protocols together in a dedicated hub | Homey | Verify the exact model, device support, and any bridging limitations. |
For other platforms such as Samsung SmartThings or Hubitat, compare current official device and feature documentation against your inventory; the cited sources here do not establish a reliable feature-by-feature comparison with Home Assistant. Avoid choosing by platform reputation alone: confirm how your actual devices connect and which functions remain available if internet access is lost.
