That review praised backlight control, sport and gaming features, but criticised real-world colour and some fast-action texture blur. The 55-inch model looks unusually well equipped on paper; its picture quality in this exact size and configuration is less firmly established.
What is the Hisense 55UR8SAU?
Hisense Australia identifies the 55UR8SAU as a 55-inch UR8S RGB MiniLED 4K smart TV. The 2026 model-specific specification sheet lists a 3840 × 2160 resolution, an 8-bit-plus-FRC panel, 4,224 colour-control units and VIDAA U9, powered by a MediaTek MT9655 processor. Those are published specifications, not independent confirmation of picture performance.

What does the available review evidence say?
TechRadar reviewer James Davidson reviewed a 65-inch UR8 on 10 August 2026. His assessment is useful context for the UR8 series, but it is not a direct test of the Australian 55UR8SAU. He praised the tested set’s backlight control, sports performance, gaming features and anti-glare screen. His criticisms included real-world colours that did not live up to measurements, little distinction among movie picture modes, and some texture blur in fast-paced action.
#1 Best Overall
- HI - QLED MINILED: Striking contrast and vivid, lifelike color put every scene in a new light. Whether it's a sunny landscape or a candlelit drama, the picture leaps off the screen. Mini-LED backlighting uses hundreds of precise light zones to enhance contrast across the screen. Paired with Hi-QLED technology, every color comes through with stunning depth and accuracy
- NATIVE 144HZ REFRESH RATE: Fast breaks, high-speed chases, live finales — every frame stays crisp and fluid, so the action is always exactly where you need it to be. Native 144Hz refresh performance keeps movement fast and sharp, reducing blur during gameplay and live sports. The quick response helps you stay in control during competitive gaming while making rapid camera shots in shows and movies easier to follow
- BUILT-IN SUBWOOFER: Immersive deep bass from the built-in subwoofer pulls you into the heart of the moment, from the rumble of an explosion to the thump of your favorite song. Feel like you’re a part of the action
- ANTI-REFLECTION & GLARE-FREE: Bright rooms are no match for this screen. The anti-reflection and glare-free display keeps your view clean and distraction-free, so you stay focused on what matters — the show
- UNIBODY SLIM DESIGN: Edge-to-edge display and a seamless design that disappears into your room — so all you see is the picture
Davidson’s verdict was: “The Hisense UR8 brings RGB mini-LED to a more affordable price point, delivering impressive backlight control, good sports performance, and a ton of gaming features. Unfortunately, its colors, arguably its main selling point, are disappointing, not providing the wow-factor I was looking for.” That judgement applies to the 65-inch sample he tested, not a measured result for the 55-inch Australian model. Read the TechRadar UR8 review.
CHOICE has a page titled “Hisense 55UR8SAU review,” but the visible information does not reveal its expert rating, pros, cons or test results. Its page confirms a 55-inch listing and displays A$1,799 without a visible date; that figure should not be treated as a current offer or as evidence of a test conclusion. See CHOICE’s listing.
How bright is it, and what do the numbers mean?
Brightness claims for this TV use different sources and methods, so they are not directly interchangeable:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- 2,500 nits: Hisense’s 2026 model-specific specification sheet lists this as the 55UR8SAU’s peak brightness.
- Up to 4,000 nits: Hisense Australia’s product page makes this claim and says data may vary by size; it does not establish that the 55-inch model reaches that figure.
- 2,097 nits and 771 nits: TechRadar measured its 65-inch UR8 sample at 2,097 nits in HDR Filmmaker Mode on a 10% window and 771 nits full-screen. These are independent measurements of a different screen size, not results for the 55-inch set.
Peak brightness figures alone cannot settle how HDR looks in a room or across different scenes. For a direct comparison with another TV, look for measurements that disclose the screen size, picture mode and test-window size, rather than comparing headline figures without their conditions. TechRadar’s measurements are in its 65-inch UR8 review.
Is the 55UR8SAU good for gaming?
Its listed gaming connections and features are substantial: Hisense specifies native 180 Hz Game Mode, FreeSync Premium Pro and four HDMI 2.1 inputs. The sheet also places eARC on HDMI 3. Before connecting a console, PC and audio system, check the TV’s manual for the exact supported resolution, refresh-rate and VRR combinations on each input; a feature list does not establish that every mode works simultaneously in every setup.

The 65-inch TechRadar review praised the UR8’s gaming features, while also noting texture blur in some fast action. That caveat matters to anyone choosing a screen mainly for rapid movement, but it is not a direct 55-inch motion test. If possible, inspect the exact model with the kinds of games and movement you watch, and check measured input lag and mode support from a test of that size before treating the refresh-rate label as a guarantee of performance.
Is it an OLED alternative?
The 55UR8SAU is an LCD-based RGB MiniLED television, not an OLED. Its specification points to a different set of trade-offs: local backlight control and high listed brightness rather than individually self-emitting pixels. The available TechRadar review found good backlight control on a 65-inch UR8, but its criticism of real-world colour means RGB MiniLED’s colour advantage should not be assumed from the technology name alone. The available evidence does not establish a direct 55-inch comparison with an OLED, so compare dark-scene detail, blooming, colour in real content and bright-room reflections on the models you are considering.
Sound, ports and installation
Built-in sound
Hisense specifies Dolby Atmos and a 2.1.2-channel speaker arrangement: two 10 W main speakers, a 20 W subwoofer and two 5 W side speakers. It describes Hi-Concerto synchronization with selected Hisense audio products; this does not establish compatibility with every soundbar. The specification sheet lists eARC on HDMI 3 for connecting compatible audio equipment.
Connections
The model sheet lists four HDMI 2.1 inputs, one USB 3.0 port, one USB 2.0 port, Wi-Fi 6 capability and Bluetooth 5.4. If you expect to use eARC, reserve HDMI 3 for that connection when planning which devices go into the remaining inputs.
Stand or wall mount
Without its stand, the set measures 1226 × 714 × 52 mm and weighs 15.0 kg. With the stand, it measures 1226 × 774 × 263 mm and weighs 18.2 kg. The listed VESA pattern is 400 × 400 mm. Check furniture depth and clearance if using the stand; for wall mounting, confirm that the bracket supports the VESA pattern and the TV’s weight, and that its supplied hardware suits the wall and installation.

Who should consider it—and what to compare
The 55UR8SAU is worth considering if you want a 55-inch 4K TV with a high listed refresh rate, several modern gaming connections and RGB MiniLED backlighting. The unresolved question is whether its real-scene colour and motion performance meet your expectations in this exact size; the independent review evidence available is for the 65-inch UR8.
When comparing it with similarly sized TVs in your budget, check:
- independently measured HDR brightness, including window size and picture mode;
- colour accuracy in real viewing and whether RGB MiniLED produces a visible benefit;
- dark-scene blooming and black levels, as well as reflections in your room;
- supported 4K high-refresh and VRR combinations, input lag and how HDMI ports are allocated;
- motion handling for sport, games and film cadence;
- VIDAA app support for the streaming services you use;
- whether the built-in audio suits your room or an audio upgrade is needed; and
- the actual price, delivery, stock and warranty terms.
The sources available do not provide a full set of comparable direct 55-inch test results across those factors, so these are checks to make rather than settled head-to-head conclusions.
