What “Hire, Prove, PASS, Pay” means
AgentTrust’s project repository describes a machine-to-machine contracting flow: one agent offers a task, another bids to perform it, funds are placed in escrow, the worker submits a deliverable, and an AI referee returns PASS or FAIL. In the intended case, a PASS leads to payment. That is the project’s description of its workflow, not independent confirmation that the entire process has been validated in operation.

- Hire: A requester posts a job and agents can bid.
- Lock: Funds are committed to an XRPL escrow rather than sent directly to the worker at the outset.
- Prove: The worker submits a deliverable for assessment by the project’s AI referee.
- Pay: A PASS verdict is intended to lead to release of escrowed funds.
The ledger and referee have different jobs. XRPL enforces the conditions attached to an escrow transaction. A referee assesses whether the submitted work meets the task’s requirements. The repository describes the referee as independent, but the reviewed material does not establish its independence in practice, the accuracy of its decisions, or a process for challenging them.
How XRPL escrow works
XRPL documentation describes escrow as funds held in an on-ledger object until specified conditions allow them to be delivered or returned. The documented lifecycle uses separate transactions: EscrowCreate establishes the escrow, EscrowFinish releases funds when its conditions are met, and EscrowCancel returns funds to the sender if the escrow expires without being finished.

These are ledger mechanisms, not built-in quality-control policies. XRPL’s escrow rules do not inspect code, text, data, or other task output. In particular, a referee returning PASS does not by itself prove that an escrow can be finished: the application must connect that verdict to a valid transaction and satisfy the escrow’s actual ledger conditions. The reviewed project description does not establish exactly how that connection is implemented.
What happens if the referee rejects the work?
A FAIL verdict is an application-level decision. It is not, by itself, an XRPL transaction that automatically cancels an escrow or returns funds. What follows depends on the marketplace’s rules and implementation: for example, whether the worker can revise the deliverable, whether the requester can challenge a verdict, or whether funds remain locked until a timeout. The available AgentTrust description does not establish those rejection, dispute, or timeout rules.

XRPL’s documented cancellation path is tied to escrow expiration: if an escrow expires without being finished, EscrowCancel returns the funds to the sender. That ledger behavior should not be confused with a referee rejecting the work; the timing and application behavior around a rejection need to be specified separately.
Who signs and submits the transactions?
The official XRPL Payments skill constructs payment transaction objects, including escrow-related transactions, and hands them to the XRPL Agent Wallet skill. The wallet skill handles wallet creation, key loading, signing, and submission. XRPL.org’s Payments skill says, “Both skills are required for a complete agentic payment workflow.”

This separation matters for security: an agent or service that can ask for a payment is not necessarily the component that should hold or use the signing keys. The official skill guidance calls for checking the payment type, trust-line and reserve prerequisites where applicable, confirming sufficient balance, simulating before submission, and explicitly handling transaction result codes. A failed or rejected transaction must be handled as a transaction outcome; it should not be presented to users as a successful payment just because an application returned PASS.
Costs and operational constraints
- More than one transaction: Creating an escrow and later finishing or cancelling it are distinct ledger operations, so the workflow is not equivalent to one direct payment.
- Reserve while locked: The sender is responsible for the escrow object reserve while funds remain locked.
- Conditional completion costs more: XRPL documentation notes higher transaction cost for conditional completion.
- Ledger timing matters: Timed releases resolve according to ledger close times, rather than an application’s exact wall-clock schedule.
- Referee costs and service costs are separate: The project description does not establish a measured referee cost, completed-job rate, payment success rate, or dispute rate.
Token escrows have additional issuer, authorization, and expiration requirements. Those details differ from the basic XRP workflow and should be checked against the relevant asset and issuer requirements before using token escrow.

How to evaluate the workflow before relying on it
Repository presence, API examples, an npm SDK, or MCP setup instructions can document an intended implementation, but they do not on their own establish service uptime, production readiness, audit status, or successful end-to-end operation. Before treating a job as protected, check these concrete questions:

- Release: What exact ledger condition permits finishing the escrow, and which component submits the finish transaction?
- Verdict linkage: How does a PASS become a valid ledger fulfillment? Is the referee’s decision recorded or independently inspectable?
- Rejection: Can a worker revise or appeal? What happens to the funds if requester and worker disagree?
- Timeout and cancellation: What expiration is set, who can cancel when eligible, and where do funds return?
- Keys and errors: Which wallet signs each transaction, how are keys protected, and how are simulation failures and ledger result codes surfaced?
- Evidence: Is there independently checkable evidence of completed jobs, referee performance, and dispute handling? The reviewed sources do not provide substantiated outcome statistics for these measures.
These are the useful comparison axes against direct agent payments or other task-payment services: whether funds are locked before work, what controls release, who controls signing keys, how rejection and disputes work, what ledger and referee costs apply, and what evidence supports the service’s claims. No comparative performance results are established by the sources reviewed here.

A low-risk way to explore XRPL agent payments
XRPL’s official getting-started tutorial installs the wallet and payments skills, creates and funds a testnet wallet, and sends a confirmed XRP payment. The guide estimates about 30 minutes for that introductory tutorial; it is an official time estimate, not a measured study. Completing it can help a developer understand a basic agentic payment path, but it does not validate the separate AgentTrust marketplace, referee, or escrow workflow end to end.
