You can build a prototype that turns a doctor’s Hindi voice note into a large-print medicine schedule, but speech recognition should only prepare a draft. It cannot safely decide what a medicine name, dose, or timing means. A caregiver must check every entry against the clinician’s written instructions or confirm uncertainty with the prescriber or pharmacist before anyone relies on the schedule.
What local Hindi speech recognition can do—and what it cannot establish
OpenAI’s 2022 release describes Whisper as a multilingual speech-recognition system and made its models and inference code open source. OpenAI reported training it on 680,000 hours of multilingual and multitask supervised data. That figure describes training data; it is not a Hindi-specific result or proof that Whisper will correctly transcribe a particular medical recording.

There are also Hindi-focused model efforts. Zindagi Technologies’ version 1.3 model card, published September 3, 2026, reports fine-tuning a Whisper model on 134.75 hours of AI4Bharat Kathbath Hindi data and reports held-out benchmark results. Project Vaani’s open-source speech-model index lists Hindi recognition models in multiple sizes. These sources show that Hindi speech-recognition components exist, not that any component is accurate for medicine names, doses, or a family’s voice note.

A benchmark result is not a safety check. Medical dictation may include unfamiliar drug names, numbers, Hindi-English code-switching, background noise, or speech that is hard to hear. The cited model information does not establish performance for those conditions, for older speakers, or on a particular device. Nor does the existence of an open model establish that a given app runs fully offline.

How to turn a voice note into a checked draft
Treat the system as a transcription and formatting aid, not a medicine recommender or prescription interpreter. The following is a possible workflow, not a validated product or clinical protocol.
- Obtain the recording appropriately. Use a voice note the patient or caregiver is permitted to handle. Consider consent and who else may hear or access it.
- Transcribe with a chosen Hindi-capable tool. If local processing is a requirement, verify that the specific application performs inference on the device. A model being open source does not by itself establish how an app handles audio, storage, telemetry, backups, or network connections.
- Review the transcript against the audio. Mark any unclear word, medicine name, number, or timing for review. Do not silently autocorrect a drug name, convert a number, or guess what the doctor meant.
- Transfer only confirmed directions. Put the clinician-confirmed medicine name and instructions into the schedule. If a detail is absent from the note, leave it unresolved rather than filling it from habit or assumption.
- Check the finished page. Compare every entry with the written prescription or other current clinician-provided directions. Ask the prescriber or pharmacist about any mismatch or uncertainty before using the page.
What the large-print schedule should contain
Make the page easy to scan: use clear, high-contrast text, generous spacing, and one medicine per row or block. The World Health Organization’s Medication Safety in Polypharmacy material mentions large print in a medication-management and adherence context. That supports legibility as a design consideration; it does not validate a particular layout or font size.

Include only information confirmed from the prescriber’s instructions. A practical layout can provide labeled spaces for:
- Medicine name, copied as written on the prescription or packaging.
- Instructions for when or how to take it, copied without interpretation.
- Any clinician-confirmed schedule details needed by the caregiver.
- A note identifying who checked the page and when.
- A clearly visible mark that sends an unresolved instruction back to the prescriber or pharmacist rather than treating it as complete.
Do not use the schedule to introduce a new dose, resolve conflicting directions, or decide whether a medicine can be split, crushed, taken with food, or moved to a different time. Those questions require authoritative instructions from the care team or pharmacist.

How to choose a speech model without assuming a winner
The available source information does not provide a head-to-head evaluation for this use case. When assessing a particular setup, check the factors that affect whether it fits your situation:
- Language: Does it handle the speaker’s Hindi, including Hindi-English switching and the way medicine names are pronounced?
- Recording conditions: Can a caregiver inspect and correct the transcript when audio is noisy or words are uncertain?
- Device and model size: Can the intended hardware run the selected model, and is setup and maintenance manageable?
- Data handling: Does the application keep inference and storage local, or does it upload audio, transcripts, or diagnostics? Check the application’s actual behavior and settings rather than inferring privacy from an open-source model.
- Model documentation: Read the model card and applicable license for the exact model and version. A model listing or benchmark does not establish medical suitability.
Privacy and deployment need separate checks
“Local AI” is not a blanket privacy guarantee. Audio or transcripts might still be sent elsewhere through the application, retained in backups, or included in telemetry, depending on its design and configuration. A large-print paper medication logbook may help someone keep track of information, and it is an optional companion to a printed schedule. It does not check whether a transcription matches a prescription. The WHO material’s mention of large print is not an endorsement of a particular logbook or product.
