For a safe batch workflow, first prove how printed contents-page numbers map to physical PDF pages; then validate chapter boundaries, apply and verify redactions on the source PDF, and split only the verified artifact. A black box drawn over text is not a redaction, and a single page-number offset is unsafe when pagination changes within the document.
How do I split PDF chapters from a table of contents?
Treat the contents page as input data, not as a set of ready-to-use PDF indexes. Printed page numbers may start after unnumbered cover pages, use Roman numerals in front matter, repeat, or diverge from physical PDF order. A fixed offset works only when the document’s pagination and assembly make that relationship stable.

Choose a page-mapping method that matches the document
| Method | Best fit | Correctness burden | Fallback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parsed contents plus fixed offset | A known producer format with stable pagination and a confirmed body start. | Confirm the offset from the source document or a separately validated step; check ordering and page bounds. The formula does not discover the offset. | Use outline destinations or per-page classification if pagination varies. |
| PDF outline destinations | The assembled PDF retains reliable bookmarks pointing to chapter starts. | Validate destination order, uniqueness, and that every destination is within the document. | Fall back to page classification when destinations are absent or ambiguous. |
| Per-page classification | Pagination changes within a bundle or cannot be represented by one offset. | Analyze pages individually and fail safely when a page or boundary is ambiguous; this moves more work into per-page processing. | Route unresolved documents for review instead of guessing. |
For a confirmed fixed mapping, define bodyStartIndex as the zero-based physical PDF index corresponding to firstPrintedPage. Then calculate pdfIndex = printedPage + bodyStartIndex - firstPrintedPage. For example, if printed page 1 is at physical index 4, printed page 8 maps to index 11. That arithmetic is valid only if the same offset applies throughout the relevant body.

Roman-numeral front matter, inserted pages, rotated scans, and repeated printed page numbers can defeat a single-offset mapping. If those features make the correspondence uncertain, do not compensate with an assumed offset: use reliable outline destinations or classify pages, and reject ambiguous cases.

Validate contents entries before PDF I/O
Parse only the expected contents-line format. Preserve diagnostic context in a protected log, and reject unknown or ambiguous lines rather than silently skipping them. Before opening or modifying the PDF, validate the parsed entries and mapped starts:
- The contents list is not empty, and every chapter title is nonblank.
- Every page value is an integer in the expected numbering system; reject malformed values rather than coercing them.
- Mapped starts are unique, strictly increasing, and within the document’s physical page bounds.
- Every resulting interval has a positive length, and the final interval ends exactly at the document page count.
Use half-open intervals: the start page is included and the end page is excluded. This lets one chapter end exactly where the next begins without subtracting or adding an inclusive-page adjustment.

Build contiguous ranges
After the mapped starts pass validation, pair each start with the next start; use the PDF page count as the final end. For the companion article’s illustrative 12-page example, starts at indexes 4, 7, and 10 produce [4, 7), [7, 10), and [10, 12). These values demonstrate interval construction; they are not a performance measurement or a guarantee for other PDFs.

validate(entries, page_count):
reject if entries is empty
reject if any title is blank
reject if any mapped start is not an integer
reject if starts are not unique and strictly increasing
reject if any start is outside the document
ranges = []
for each start and its next start:
ranges.append((start, next_start))
ranges.append((last_start, page_count))
reject if any range has start >= end
reject unless final range ends at page_count
return ranges
This is an implementation pattern, not library-specific, independently tested code. Define conventions explicitly in the calling code: whether input page numbers are printed numbers or physical indexes, whether physical indexes are zero-based, and how the document’s page count is obtained.

How can I tell whether PDF redaction actually removed the text?
A visible rectangle alone does not establish that sensitive content is gone. The PDF Association’s 2020 paper on high-security PDF redactions describes the failure mode in which text remains beneath a black rectangle. Foxit’s PDF SDK for Web redaction guide distinguishes marking regions from applying redaction to remove the underlying content.
Apply redactions before making chapter copies
Redact the source PDF’s underlying content, then verify that redacted artifact before splitting it. Do not treat page copying, an overlay, or an unapplied redaction mark as permanent removal. Foxit’s guide says to confirm irreversible application and retain a backup of the source; keep that backup outside shared output paths.

Use checks suited to the content
- Search extractable text. Re-extract text from the redacted artifact and check for the sensitive strings or patterns that were targeted.
- Review rendered pages. Inspect the rendered output around each redacted area to catch visible remnants or mistakes in the marked region.
- Check other representations when needed. Assess metadata, hidden content, revision history, and embedded files according to the sensitivity and applicable requirements.
The pdftl redaction documentation describes optional verification that re-extracts text and repeats a pattern search. It expressly does not inspect non-visible layers, revision history, or embedded files. No single check described here proves every representation of every PDF safe.
Handle scanned pages differently
Search-based redaction depends on extractable text. Foxit notes that scanned documents usually need OCR before text searching, and that image content on scanned pages must be covered by redaction marks. Treat OCR as a way to locate candidate content, not as a substitute for reviewing the rendered page and confirming the redaction was applied.

What is a safe batch-processing sequence?
- Parse. Accept only the expected contents-line shape, and retain diagnostic context in a protected log. Reject unfamiliar or ambiguous input.
- Resolve page positions. Establish
bodyStartIndexandfirstPrintedPagefrom the source document or a separately validated step. Do not infer the offset from the contents list alone. - Validate and construct ranges. Check titles, integer values, order, uniqueness, bounds, positive interval lengths, and the end-of-file boundary before performing PDF I/O.
- Redact the source. Apply actual content removal, not just a visual mark, and retain the original only in a controlled location.
- Verify the redacted artifact. Combine text and pattern checks with rendered-page review and any additional checks required by the sensitive data.
- Split and publish. Split the verified artifact using the validated chapter ranges. Keep unsanitized inputs out of shared output paths and expire intermediate files under the system’s retention policy.
- Measure the queue before adding workers. Track completed pages per unit time, queue wait, redaction duration, copy duration, output bytes, and failures by stable reason code.
The sequence separates two different correctness questions: whether chapter boundaries point to the intended physical pages, and whether redaction removed the sensitive content. A correct split cannot repair a failed redaction, while successful redaction does not make incorrect page boundaries safe.
Should splitting run locally or through a hosted service?
A local library or SDK can keep processing within the application’s environment, but the team remains responsible for integration, validation, redaction, and secure handling. A hosted splitter may reduce some integration work while introducing file-transfer and provider-governance considerations. Evaluate both against the complete pipeline, not just the split operation.
Adobe PDF Services documentation describes splitting by page ranges and a flow that uploads the input asset, submits a job, and collects generated files. That documentation establishes a splitting capability, not a complete redaction-first security pipeline. Confirm how sensitive files are handled and whether the service covers each required processing stage before relying on it.
How should worker concurrency be tuned?
There is no sourced benchmark here that establishes a safe worker count or throughput target for this design. Record completed-page throughput alongside queue wait, redaction and copy durations, output size, failures, and system resource use. Increase concurrency only while completed-page throughput improves and memory use, queue delay, and rejection rates remain acceptable; otherwise, investigate the bottleneck or reduce the worker count.
The chapter-range arithmetic and workflow are design guidance, not proof that an arbitrary PDF will map correctly or a claim of measured performance. Validate the mapping, boundaries, redaction, and operational behavior against the documents and environment you actually process.
