It usually means a real partition that has no drive letter or does not appear in File Explorer; it can also refer to unallocated space, which is not a partition at all. Check the disk’s layout and partition status before changing anything: EFI System and Recovery partitions help Windows start or recover, and deleting or formatting them can make a PC unusable or erase data.
What “hidden” can mean on a disk
The phrase describes visibility, not purpose. A section missing from File Explorer may be a system partition, an ordinary volume without a drive letter, an OEM utility partition, or unallocated capacity. Those cases require different responses.

- Partition not shown as a normal drive: Windows may keep a partition out of Explorer because it is intended for booting, recovery, or manufacturer tools. Some GPT partitions are not exposed as ordinary volumes; the Microsoft Reserved Partition is visible through command-line tools rather than normal Explorer browsing. Microsoft’s UEFI/GPT partition guidance describes these roles.
- Volume without a drive letter: It may still have a recognizable filesystem and contain data. Not having a letter does not mean it is empty or safe to reformat.
- Unallocated space: This capacity is not currently assigned to a partition. Disk Management can create a new volume there, but doing so is not a safe way to investigate a disk that may contain lost files.
- “Hidden sectors”: This older phrase refers to areas outside the ordinary partition representation, not to a standard Windows partition type. Microsoft’s GPT FAQ says platform-critical data is stored in partitions rather than unpartitioned or “hidden” sectors.
What common Windows UEFI/GPT partitions do
On a modern Windows PC using UEFI and GPT, the default layout generally includes a system partition, an MSR, the Windows partition, and a recovery partition. Additional OEM partitions may appear. Their order and sizes can differ with Windows version, installation history, firmware mode, device sector size, and manufacturer configuration.

| Partition or area | Purpose | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| EFI System Partition (ESP) | Stores files required to boot the device. | Microsoft’s current deployment guidance specifies a minimum of 200 MB for 512-byte native or 512e devices, and 300 MB for 4K-native devices. The ESP uses FAT32. |
| Microsoft Reserved Partition (MSR) | Reserved for Windows partition management and system software; it is not user storage. | The current deployment guide specifies 16 MB. Microsoft’s GPT FAQ instead describes a 128 MB MSR for disks of at least 16 GB. These are conflicting Microsoft documents; the deployment guide, updated September 9, 2026, is the current Windows 11 deployment guidance, not a universal measurement for every installed PC. |
| Windows partition | Holds the Windows operating system and, commonly, user files and applications. | It is typically formatted as NTFS. |
| Windows Recovery partition | Holds Windows Recovery Environment tools used to diagnose or repair Windows. | It is commonly placed after the Windows partition so Windows can manage it as servicing needs change. |
| OEM or other unrecognized partition | May contain manufacturer diagnostics, utility software, or recovery content. | Its purpose cannot be determined from the word “hidden”; consult the PC or disk manufacturer before changing it. |
| Unallocated space | Capacity not currently assigned to a partition. | It is not itself a partition. Creating a volume or formatting over an area can compromise recovery of files that were there. |
Microsoft’s deployment guide gives the current UEFI/GPT layout and deployment sizes. Its separate GPT FAQ contains the conflicting MSR figure, so do not infer an installed PC’s partition purpose from size alone.

How to inspect a disk without changing it
- Open Disk Management: right-click Start and select Disk Management. Review each physical disk and note partition size, label, filesystem, status, and whether a drive letter is assigned. Compare the whole layout rather than treating a missing Explorer entry as missing capacity.
- If the graphical view does not identify a partition clearly, use DiskPart for inspection. Open Terminal or Command Prompt as an administrator, enter
diskpart, thenlist diskandlist partitionafter selecting the relevant disk withselect disk N, substituting its disk number forN. These commands inspect the layout; do not usedelete, clean, format, orcreateas diagnostic commands. - Identify the partition type and role before considering any change. If Windows identifies it as an EFI System Partition or Recovery partition, leave it in place during ordinary troubleshooting. Microsoft warns that these partitions contain important files needed for the PC to operate properly.
- If a volume appears to be a normal data volume but lacks a letter, do not assign one until you have confirmed its purpose. Some system or OEM partitions are intentionally not exposed as ordinary user volumes.
Microsoft’s Disk Management guidance distinguishes initializing a disk, creating a volume in unallocated space, and formatting an existing volume. Those are changes, not inspection steps.
Should you delete an EFI or Recovery partition?
Usually, no. The EFI System Partition supplies boot files, and the Recovery partition holds tools that may be needed to repair Windows. Removing either can prevent normal startup or make built-in recovery unavailable. A partition may look small or unused in Explorer precisely because Windows does not present it as a regular data drive.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

OEM partitions also may support diagnostics or factory recovery. If you are planning a reinstall or a disk-layout change, first establish what each partition does and ensure you have a verified backup and recovery media. Do not delete an unfamiliar partition just to reclaim a few gigabytes.
When a disk may be failing or files are missing
If the disk is failing, or the missing area may contain important files, stop writing to it. Do not initialize the disk, format a volume, create a partition, or copy new files onto it; these actions can overwrite information needed for recovery. Microsoft’s Disk Management troubleshooting guidance cautions that initializing or formatting can erase data and advises considering a data recovery lab for important files on a failing disk.

Does this apply to every computer?
No. These names and instructions describe Windows, especially a UEFI/GPT setup. GPT is suited to modern UEFI systems and supports more than four partitions; MBR remains relevant for older hardware or operating-system compatibility. macOS and Linux use their own partition labels and visibility rules, so a Windows partition map should not be applied to them automatically.
