What does “hidden gem” mean in gaming?
“Hidden gem” is mainly a discovery label: it describes a game that deserves attention but has not reached, or has escaped, the notice of some audience. The Steam curator Hidden Gem Highlights describes its focus as “Unearthing overlooked Steam games across a wide variety of genres.” PlayStation Blog used a similar framing in its 2016 feature, “23 Games You Might Have Missed in 2016.”

The phrase is relative, not a measurable level of popularity. A game may be well known among fans of a genre or on one platform yet unfamiliar to a broader audience.
What does “cult classic” mean?
“Cult classic” is mainly a legacy and audience label. It points to a committed niche following that stays attached to a game, sometimes after limited mainstream success or wider recognition that arrived later. The reference page lists EarthBound, Psychonauts, and Alan Wake as games with cult followings; GameSpot’s editorial coverage also includes titles recognized later. These are attributed examples, not an official classification or a ranking agreed on by all players.

How are the labels different?

For example, the Strong’s World Video Game Hall of Fame considers “icon-status,” “longevity,” “geographical reach,” and “influence.” Those institutional criteria offer one way to think about recognition, but Hall of Fame consideration is not the same thing as being a cult classic.
Can a game be both?
Yes. A game can remain relatively unknown to the broader public while sustaining a devoted niche community. EarthBound (1994) is one title cited as having a cult following; whether a player also calls it a hidden gem depends on the audience and context. A title may become better known over time without losing its dedicated fans.

- Following: Is there evidence of persistent, engaged fans, rather than attention around a single event?
- Recognition over time: Did wider attention grow after release, or has the game’s audience remained concentrated in a niche?
- Availability: Can a player access it now? That depends on platform, edition, and preservation or re-release status—not on either label.
Does cult status mean a game is easy to find or play?
No. Cultural recognition and current access are separate issues. A 2023 study explainer from the Video Game History Foundation and Software Preservation Network reports that 87 percent of classic games released in the United States are out of print. That figure applies to classic games in the study’s stated U.S. scope; it is not a statistic about cult classics or hidden gems specifically.
