Short answer: Hetzner Cloud moves the encoder away from your home power and internet connection, while a home PC uses hardware you already control. Neither is automatically cheaper or guaranteed to keep a YouTube channel live without interruption. Compare a suitable cloud server and its traffic charges with your PC’s measured electricity use, internet costs, and maintenance—and plan separately for outages and YouTube’s archive limit.
What changes when you move the encoder to Hetzner Cloud?
A continuous YouTube stream needs an encoder to send video to YouTube. With a home PC, that encoder depends on your computer, household power, cooling, and internet connection. With Hetzner Cloud, it runs on a virtual machine in a provider data center. Hetzner offers shared-resource and dedicated-resource server types, and lists Cloud locations in Europe, the USA, and Singapore. A public network interface requires a Primary IP. Moving the encoder off-site removes household power and internet as dependencies for that machine, but it does not eliminate every failure point. The VM, its software and configuration, the network path to YouTube, YouTube ingest, and playback all remain relevant. Hetzner’s availability terms apply to an individual Cloud Server, not to the complete encoder-to-viewer path.

Compare the trade-offs
| Factor | Hetzner Cloud | Home PC |
|---|---|---|
| Where encoding runs | A virtual machine hosted in a provider data center; shared and dedicated CPU options are offered. | Your computer in your home environment. |
| Availability dependencies | Hetzner says it will use commercially reasonable efforts to provide 99.9% monthly availability for each Cloud Server, subject to SLA exclusions. This is not an end-to-end stream guarantee. Hetzner Cloud and vServer Service Agreement | Your PC, power, cooling, internet, monitoring, and recovery arrangements. No universal home-PC uptime figure is established. |
| Cost inputs | Server plan, IP, and outbound traffic. Billing continues while a resource exists, including when powered off. Hetzner billing FAQ | Hardware ownership, measured electricity, internet plan, cooling, any backup power, and maintenance. |
| Network and transfer | Included traffic varies by server type and region; outbound traffic above the applicable allowance may be billed. Hetzner traffic documentation | Your upload capacity, data cap, and connection reliability. |
| Encoding capacity | Choose CPU and memory for the encoder settings you intend to use. Hetzner’s reviewed documentation does not establish a minimum VM size for a particular resolution or frame rate. | You can assess your own CPU/GPU and encoder support, but sustained encoding still uses power and produces heat. |
| Long-term recording | YouTube’s archive limitation applies regardless of where the encoder runs; a separate archive may be necessary. | Same YouTube limitation. Local recording also uses home storage and PC resources. |
How to decide which setup fits
Choose cloud when household interruptions are the main concern
A cloud VM is a reasonable fit if you want the encoder outside your home, can administer a server, and have confirmed the selected VM can sustain your chosen encoding settings. Hetzner states a 99.9% monthly availability effort for each Cloud Server, measured over a calendar month, with exceptions including customer software or configuration failures and certain network interruptions outside its reasonable control. Treat this as a bounded VM commitment, not a promise that YouTube will receive or display an uninterrupted stream.

Hetzner’s server resources continue to bill while they exist, even when powered off. Its traffic allowances depend on plan and location. For example, Hetzner Docs lists 20 TB of included traffic for CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud Servers in EU locations; other plans and locations, including the US and Singapore, can have different allowances. The figure is not universal, and the traffic page was last changed 2024-05-21, so verify the selected server’s current allowance and overage terms. Hetzner traffic documentation

Choose a home PC when your existing setup is capable and dependable
A home PC can make sense if it already has sufficient encoding capacity and you can keep it powered, cool, connected, and monitored. Its real cost depends on your household: measure the computer’s power draw while encoding, apply your electricity tariff, and account for cooling, internet service, backup power if needed, and maintenance. Do not assume electricity is negligible or that a cloud server is automatically cheaper.

Calculate both totals on the same time horizon
There is no defensible universal monthly break-even point without the exact cloud plan, region, IP and projected outbound transfer, plus your PC’s measured consumption, electricity rate, internet plan, and backup-power costs. Compare like periods (for example, one month) and include costs that actually change with the streaming setup. A cloud resource that is merely powered off may still incur charges while it exists.

Configure the encoder for YouTube
Use YouTube’s current Live encoder guidance for the exact resolution, frame rate, and codec you select. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. Its guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec; use the current table rather than a single bitrate assumption for every stream. YouTube Live encoder settings
- Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key, following YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions. YouTube live-stream setup
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not include it in public screenshots, logs, or shared configuration examples. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the ingest URL and key, choose RTMPS where supported, and set codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, keyframe interval, and bitrate according to YouTube’s current guidance and the available CPU/GPU capacity.
- Test before relying on the stream. Check that the encoder remains stable under the intended workload and that YouTube receives the stream. Monitor for encoder errors and dropped connection; a VM size alone does not prove that a particular software encode will work.
- Plan recovery. Keep a way to detect an interrupted encoder or ingest connection and restart or fail over. YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend testing encoder failover; do not assume one PC or VM will recover every fault automatically. YouTube live-streaming tips
Plan around YouTube rules and archive limits
Rights and policy apply to continuous channels too
YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and the creator to have the necessary rights to the content. This is especially important for continuous streams built around music, third-party footage, or other licensed material. A technically stable encoder does not grant permission to stream copyrighted material. YouTube Terms of Service

A 24/7 stream may not produce a complete YouTube archive
YouTube says a live stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is an archive caveat, not a blanket prohibition on continuous streaming. If preserving every hour matters, maintain a separate recording and storage plan; YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
Troubleshoot common decision and setup problems
- The VM is online, but the stream stops: VM availability does not guarantee the encoder process, configuration, route to YouTube, or ingest service is healthy. Check encoder logs and YouTube’s incoming stream status; arrange monitoring and a tested restart or failover path.
- The stream key stops working or appears in a screenshot: Check the selected YouTube stream and ingest settings. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
- The VM cannot sustain the selected encode: Reduce workload or select a VM with suitable CPU resources, then test the actual encoder settings. The reviewed Hetzner documentation does not specify a minimum configuration for a given resolution.
- Cloud costs persist after shutdown: Hetzner bills while the resource exists. Check whether you still need the server and review the applicable plan, IP, and traffic charges before deleting or retaining it.
- Transfer charges or limits are unclear: Look up the allowance for the precise server type and location, then estimate outbound transfer for the intended stream. Do not apply an EU allowance to a US or Singapore server.
- YouTube’s replay is missing or incomplete: Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Keep a separate recording if complete preservation matters.
- A home setup drops during an outage: Check local power and internet separately. A UPS can help with some power interruptions but cannot fix ISP outages, cloud-region failures, or power losses beyond its capacity; size it for the equipment and runtime you need.
Or let it run in the cloud
