Hetzner Cloud does not impose one universal traffic allowance: the included monthly outgoing traffic depends on the server family and datacenter region. Hetzner counts outgoing traffic toward the allowance, while incoming and internal traffic are free. If you exceed the allowance, overage is billed rather than automatically stopped; usage alerts at 75% and 100% are warnings, not caps. For a continuous YouTube stream, estimate egress from the stream’s combined video and audio bitrate and its run time, then compare it with the exact plan and region.
What Hetzner Cloud counts as traffic
Hetzner’s Cloud billing FAQ says it bills outgoing traffic; incoming and internal traffic are free. Some cross-zone Cloud traffic sent over public IPs can count as outgoing, so traffic between Cloud servers is not automatically free. If your Hetzner server sends an ingest stream to YouTube, estimate the server’s outbound stream. Do not count YouTube viewers’ playback as if it necessarily leaves your server: YouTube distributes the viewing stream.

Traffic is accounted for by calendar month. Once the included allowance is exceeded, Cloud overage is billed in 100 MB increments, with a partial increment rounded up. Hetzner sends usage notifications at 75% and 100%, but these do not throttle or stop traffic. The allowance varies by product family and location. Hetzner’s Traffic page lists 20 TB for EU CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud servers. For CX and CPX, listed US allowances range from 1–5 TB and Singapore allowances from 0.5–5 TB. CCX allowances also vary by plan and location. Verify the allowance for your exact family, plan, and datacenter rather than assuming that every Hetzner Cloud server includes 20 TB. The figures are from Hetzner Docs’ Traffic page, last changed May 21, 2024; confirm current terms when choosing a server.

Estimate a continuous stream’s monthly egress
Use the encoder’s actual video bitrate plus its audio bitrate. For a decimal estimate, monthly GB ≈ total Mbps × streaming hours × 0.45. This follows from converting megabits to bytes and multiplying by elapsed time; it is arithmetic, not a Hetzner-published usage figure. It assumes a constant bitrate and excludes protocol overhead, reconnects, bitrate variation, and any other server egress.

For example, a nominal 10 Mbps stream running continuously for a full 30-day month uses about 3.24 decimal TB by this formula. Add the audio bitrate if it is not already included in the 10 Mbps, and allow for overhead and all other egress before comparing the estimate with your allowance. YouTube’s recommended 1080p60 live bitrates are 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264; those encoder settings are not Hetzner traffic quotas. Traffic allowance is not a stream-quality guarantee
Having enough monthly data does not establish that a server’s upload throughput is sufficient, that the connection will remain stable, or that YouTube will receive a healthy stream. YouTube advises testing the encoder, monitoring stream health, using RTMPS, and leaving 20% headroom in available upload bandwidth. That headroom concerns connection capacity and reliability; it does not reduce the stream’s monthly data volume. YouTube streaming tips

Before committing to a configuration
- Confirm the exact Hetzner Cloud family, plan, datacenter, included allowance, and applicable overage rate.
- Use the intended codec and combined audio/video bitrate in the estimate, along with the actual hours you expect to stream.
- Leave capacity for protocol overhead, reconnects, bitrate changes, and other server egress.
- Check traffic usage during the month; the 75% and 100% notifications are not protective caps.
- Test the upload path and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators separately from the traffic total.
