Best VS Code Extensions for Developers: Choose by Language and Workflow

The right VS Code extensions depend on your project. Choose by task, check trust and compatibility, and keep each setup focused.

There is no single best set of VS Code extensions for every developer. Start with the needs of your project: language support, formatting, linting, debugging, testing, or remote development. Add only extensions that solve a real task, and check the publisher, documentation, dependencies, changelog, and current compatibility before installing.

What VS Code extensions do

Extensions add capabilities to Visual Studio Code, including language features, debuggers, and workflow tools. The Marketplace is where you discover and install them. An extension’s details can show its publisher, description, README, feature contributions, changelog, dependencies, install count, and rating.

Those details help you investigate an extension; popularity and ratings do not prove that it suits your project. Marketplace information and compatibility can change, so check the current listing rather than relying on an old ranking or install count.

Choose extensions for the work you actually do

Language support

Begin with support for the language or framework your project uses. Then check whether the extension provides the particular editor features you need, such as IntelliSense, debugging, or test integration. A language extension may rely on tools installed separately; read its requirements before expecting it to provide a complete runtime or development environment.

Formatting and linting

A formatter makes code conform to a chosen layout. A linter identifies potential errors or rule violations. They have complementary roles, but should be configured for the project rather than added by default. Check whether your repository already specifies tools or settings so your editor does not fight the team’s conventions.

For JavaScript projects, Microsoft’s VS Code workspace-recommendation example names dbaeumer.vscode-eslint and esbenp.prettier-vscode. These are examples of project-specific recommendations, not universal choices for every JavaScript project or stack.

Debugging and testing

If you debug or run tests from the editor, look for extensions that support the language and tooling already used by the project. Confirm how they connect to the debugger or test runner and whether any required command-line tools must be installed separately.

Remote development

For work in WSL, SSH hosts, or containers, select the remote-development workflow that matches where the code and tools run. Extensions can be installed locally or in the remote environment; check the VS Code extension view to see where an extension is active. Extension synchronization does not cover Remote SSH, container, or WSL windows, so do not assume that syncing your local extensions will reproduce every remote setup.

Example: setting up VS Code for Python

Microsoft’s Python extension supports editor features including IntelliSense, linting, debugging, and testing. The Python interpreter is a separate installation; installing the extension alone does not install Python.

  1. Install the Python interpreter appropriate for your operating system and project.
  2. Install Microsoft’s Python extension from the VS Code Marketplace.
  3. Open the project and select the interpreter or environment the project uses.
  4. Choose a linter that fits the project. The official VS Code Python documentation lists Pylint, flake8, mypy, and community Ruff as options.
  5. Run the project’s tests and debugging workflow, and confirm they use the intended interpreter and environment.

Do not enable several linters just because they are available. Pick the one your project uses, configure it for that environment, and check whether the project already defines its rules.

Check an extension before installing it

  • Publisher: Confirm who publishes it and whether that is the publisher you intend to trust.
  • README and description: Check what it does, how to use it, and any prerequisites or limitations.
  • Features and dependencies: Review the Marketplace details to understand what the extension contributes and what other components it depends on.
  • Changelog and compatibility: Look for signs of maintenance and verify that the current version supports your VS Code setup and project tools.
  • Permissions: Treat extensions as software with meaningful access. Microsoft’s guidance states, “Extensions have the same permissions as VS Code itself.” Beginning with VS Code 1.97, VS Code shows a confirmation prompt for third-party publishers.
  • Current Marketplace listing: Recheck the listing before installation. Install counts and ratings are discovery signals, not proof of safety, maintenance, or project fit.

Use profiles and workspace recommendations to keep setups manageable

Profiles for different roles or stacks

Profiles can help you switch between distinct VS Code configurations, such as one for Python work and another for web development. This avoids treating every extension as necessary in every project.

Workspace recommendations for teams

A repository can recommend extensions relevant to that project. Recommendations let teammates see useful tools without implying that every suggested extension is mandatory for every developer. Review the publisher and requirements before accepting a recommendation.

Remote windows need their own checks

When you open a project through WSL, Remote SSH, or a container, check whether each needed extension must run locally or in the remote environment. Synchronization does not cover these remote windows, so verify the actual extension state in the environment where the project runs.

A practical way to build your extension set

  1. List the tasks you want VS Code to handle: language support, formatting, linting, debugging, tests, or remote access.
  2. Check the project’s existing configuration and team recommendations before choosing tools.
  3. Search the Marketplace for extensions that directly address those tasks, then inspect publisher, README, features, dependencies, changelog, and compatibility.
  4. Install one relevant extension at a time and confirm it works with the project’s actual runtime and tools.
  5. Use separate profiles or workspace recommendations when different projects need different setups.
  6. Revisit installed extensions occasionally and remove those that no longer solve an active need.

For developers who need website screenshots

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a VS Code extension. It is an alternative to setting up browser automation when your development workflow needs website captures. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its clean-shot options can accept cookie and consent banners and remove supported consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Its response identifies page verdict and billing status, and bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed.

ScreenshotNeo API documentation

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, no card required.
