Hermes WebUI is a browser interface built around an existing Hermes Agent setup. Open WebUI is a general-purpose chat frontend that can connect to Hermes Agent through its OpenAI-compatible API. The two are not interchangeable competitors: one is a Hermes-centered interface, the other is a broader chat workspace that can also front Hermes, and you can run both.
Start with the names
“Hermes WebUI” in this comparison refers to the project in the nesquena/hermes-webui repository on GitHub. Its README describes a browser UI that uses your existing Hermes agent and its configured models. Open WebUI is a separate project with its own documentation. Its official Hermes integration guide tells you to point Open WebUI at the Hermes Agent API server as an OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
The confusion comes from the word “Hermes,” which is used for three different things. Hermes Agent is the runtime that receives requests, uses models, and runs tools. Hermes WebUI and Open WebUI are both interfaces that sit in front of an agent or model. Open WebUI’s documentation makes a useful distinction here: a plain model provider takes a prompt and returns a response, while an agent can choose and execute tools. In an Open WebUI-to-Hermes setup, Hermes handles the agent work and Open WebUI handles the chat screen.

These are fit criteria rather than a ranking. Both projects change, and the Hermes project itself describes the wider agent market as converging. Avoid claiming that memory, scheduling, or tooling is unique to one product unless you have checked the current release documentation.

Connecting Open WebUI to Hermes Agent
The official setup flow has four steps:
- Enable the Hermes API server in your Hermes configuration.
- Set an API key for that server.
- Start the Hermes gateway.
- In Open WebUI’s admin connection settings, add the Hermes API endpoint and the key from step 2.
The documented default endpoint is http://localhost:8642/v1. These are the guide’s example values, not universal network settings. If Open WebUI runs in Docker and Hermes runs on the host machine, the guide uses host.docker.internal in the endpoint so the container can reach the host.
Where tools run
This is the most important practical difference to understand before you connect anything. When Open WebUI talks to Hermes, Hermes creates a server-side agent, so tool calls run on the machine hosting the Hermes API server. They do not necessarily run on the computer where you view Open WebUI in your browser.

In practice, if your browser is on a laptop and the API server is on a remote computer, file operations and other configured tools act on the remote computer. Decide which host you want the agent to affect, and set file access and key handling accordingly.
For Hermes WebUI, the project README describes in-process chat as its default, meaning the agent runs within the Hermes WebUI setup. It also describes an optional gateway mode. The same README states that full agent-loop delegation is not yet shipped, as of the early October 2026 check. Confirm the current routing behavior in the README before relying on it, because this is the detail most likely to change.

Which one to choose
- Choose Hermes WebUI if your work is mainly operating a Hermes setup and you want a browser interface built around it.
- Choose Open WebUI if you want a general chat workspace with document retrieval, web search, plugins, and team sharing, and you want Hermes Agent available as one of its back ends.
- Use both if you want the Hermes-focused interface for agent work and a broader workspace for everyday chat. Nothing in the documentation reviewed indicates they conflict when run side by side, but test the endpoint and key settings on your own setup first.
Hermes’s integrations page also names Nous Portal as an option for model and Tool Gateway access. It is an optional service, and the sources reviewed do not establish its current pricing or terms.
