There is no single confirmed fix for every 7 Days to Die FPS drop or EXC NullReference message. The fastest route to a working game is to confirm your exact build, note when the error appears, and then run a set of low-risk checks in order: mod isolation in a new save, Steam file verification, and a comparison against the published hardware specifications. Cleanup and hardware purchases come last, and only after your saves are backed up.
Start by checking which version you are on. The official Help Center listed v3.3.0 Stable as the current stable release as of October 7, 2026. If you are still on v3.2, read the 3.2 section below, but also check whether updating helps, because the 3.3.0 notes name one exception that is still listed as a known issue.

Confirm your version and when the error happens
Before you change anything, write down four details. They decide which of the checks below are relevant to you.

- Exact build: the version shown on the launcher or main menu, and the platform you play on (Steam on Windows is the platform covered by the official Hardware Information page used here).
- Timing: whether the FPS drops began after an update, or were present from the start.
- Where the exception appears: at launch, while generating a new world, when loading an existing save, or during play.
- Mode: solo or multiplayer, and whether you run any third-party mods.
Keep the first complete exception stack trace, not only the short banner. The first full trace shows which code path failed, and it is the detail that separates a generic NullReferenceException from one of the specific issues the developer has documented. A banner line alone does not identify a cause.
What the official release notes do and do not establish
The two most recent stable release notes from the developer are useful, but they answer narrower questions than the title suggests.

v3.3.0 Stable (Help Center, updated October 5, 2026)
The v3.3.0 known issues list includes this entry: “A possible NRE when generating chunk decorations (new games only).” That is the only official statement on a NullReference-type problem in the current stable notes that matches this topic. It applies to creating new games. It does not say the issue is fixed in 3.3, so if you see the error while generating a new world, treat it as a documented open issue rather than something a patch has resolved.
v3.2.0 Stable (Steam announcement, August 26, 2026)
The 3.2.0 changelog lists several specific fixes related to exceptions and memory:
- A NullReference exception when exiting the game after dropping a chicken.
- Memory use from some player gear textures.
- A null check added to
RequirementItemModTier. - An EOS exception during POI reset.
- A serverside exception related to a memory stream.
These entries are individual fixes. They do not show that all 3.2 performance problems or all NullReference messages share one cause, and the announcement does not publish FPS benchmarks or a measured performance gain. If your error matches one of these scenarios, the 3.2 fix already covers it; if not, the checks below are the appropriate next step.
Step-by-step: isolate mods, verify files, then clean up
Work through these in order. Each step is more disruptive than the one before it, so stop when the problem goes away.

1. Test without third-party mods in a new save
- Open the 7 Days to Die launcher and go to the Tools tab.
- Open the game folder from the launcher.
- Move third-party mod folders out of the
Modsfolder (moving them to a backup location is safer than deleting them). - Keep the included
0_TFP_Harmonyfolder in place. Removing it is not part of this test. - Start a new save for the test. The official guidance warns that using a previous save can corrupt it, so do not load an existing world to check.
- If the FPS drops and exception stop in the new vanilla save, move mods back one at a time, launching and testing after each one. Confirm each mod matches your game version before you re-enable it.
A clean test points toward a mod. It does not prove every NullReference message is caused by mods, and a persistent error in vanilla suggests the problem lies elsewhere, such as the game installation or your hardware.
2. Verify the installed game files in Steam
- In Steam, open Library.
- Right-click 7 Days to Die and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
Steam repairs any broken or altered game files it finds. This is the lowest-risk way to rule out a damaged installation, and it does not touch your saves.

3. Clean up old data only after backing up saves
Cleanup is the most disruptive step. Do not run it as a first attempt. If you use the launcher’s Tools tab to clear old data, back up your saves first.
For a manual residual-file cleanup, the official procedure is to back up your saves, remove the old game files, and keep the Saves and GeneratedWorlds folders under %appdata%7DaysToDie. Do not delete those two folders as part of cleanup. Deleting them removes your worlds and their saved progress.

Compare your hardware with the published requirements
The developer’s Hardware Information page, updated April 21, 2026, lists the following Windows specifications. These are comparison points. They describe the minimum and recommended systems the developer publishes, not a guaranteed frame rate.

If your system is below the recommended column, a lower frame rate is expected behavior rather than an error, and it is a reasonable explanation for drops that appear only in heavy scenes. If your system meets or exceeds the recommended column, hardware is unlikely to be the main cause, and the mod and file checks above matter more.
A RAM upgrade is a conditional option only for systems below the recommended 12 GB. Before buying, confirm that your motherboard supports the module count, capacity and speed you intend to add. The published specifications do not establish that adding memory will fix a specific FPS problem.

If the problem continues
When the steps above do not resolve the issue, gather the following before you report it to the developer or search for a specific fix:
- The full stack trace from the first exception message.
- Your exact build number and platform.
- Whether the error appears in a new vanilla save, an existing save, or only during world generation.
- The results of the mod test and file verification.
- Your CPU, RAM and dedicated graphics memory compared with the table above.
Those details are what determine whether your error matches the documented chunk-decoration issue, one of the 3.2 fixes, or something not yet described publicly.
The Bottom Line
Confirm your build first, then run the mod test in a new vanilla save, then verify game files in Steam. Only after those steps should you consider cleanup, which requires backing up saves and keeping the Saves and GeneratedWorlds folders. If the NullReferenceException appears while generating a new world, treat it as the documented open chunk-decoration issue in v3.3.0, not as something already fixed.
