This is a practical sizing recommendation, not an official Hermes minimum. Use 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM and 40–50 GB of disk when you expect browser automation, several profiles, overlapping jobs or generous room for logs and updates. Running a local language model changes the calculation: memory, storage and possibly GPU capacity must be sized to the model, not just to Hermes.

The short answer: size for your workload
Hermes Agent does not publish one first-party CPU, RAM and storage minimum that applies to every VPS deployment. The resource profile depends mainly on whether inference is remote or local, how many tasks run at once, whether a browser is automated, and how much persistent data you retain.

| Use case | CPU | RAM | Persistent disk | What the figures mean |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light, single-user, hosted-model API | 1 vCPU | 2 GB | 20 GB | Practical starting recommendation for Hermes plus headroom; not a guaranteed minimum. |
| General use with browser automation or overlapping jobs | 2 vCPUs | 4 GB | 40–50 GB | More comfortable operating target for concurrency, browser processes, caches and updates. |
| Official Docker example | 1 CPU limit | 5 GB limit (5,120 MB) | 50 GB limit (51,200 MB) | Documented container configuration with persistence enabled, not a universal minimum. |
| Hermes Agent operator defaults | 500m requested; 2 CPU limit | 1 Gi requested; 4 Gi limit | Not stated | Chart defaults for the Kubernetes operator, not a requirement for every VPS. |
| Community installation guidance | Not stated | 4 GB | 1 GB plus local-model files | Community advice; treat it as guidance rather than first-party policy. |
A VPS with 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk is therefore a sensible entry point for a small API-backed personal agent. Keep some capacity unallocated for swap, filesystem overhead, browser binaries, logs, persistent sessions and upgrades. If the server will host other services, reserve their resources before applying these figures to Hermes.
Why Hermes has no single published minimum
Hermes can act as a relatively small orchestration process when the model runs at a provider’s API endpoint. The same project can also launch browsers, retain sessions and skills, execute scheduled work and, in some deployments, run a local language model. Those modes have very different resource curves.

The official Docker documentation illustrates this by showing configurable limits of container_cpu: 1, container_memory: 5120 MB and container_disk: 51200 MB, with persistence enabled. A configurable example tells you how that deployment was shaped; it does not establish that every installation needs exactly 5 GB of RAM or 50 GB of disk.
Likewise, the Hermes Agent operator README sets a default request of 500m CPU and 1Gi memory and a default limit of 2 CPU and 4Gi memory. Those values describe the operator chart’s starting policy. A standalone VPS, a Docker host and a Kubernetes pod can each have different surrounding overhead and isolation, so do not copy the operator numbers as a universal bare-metal minimum.

CPU: concurrency matters more than model size for API-backed use
One vCPU for a light personal agent
With remote inference, the VPS is not calculating model tokens. Its CPU handles Hermes itself, network encryption, tool calls, shell commands, scheduling and any browser or helper processes. One vCPU is usually adequate when one user runs occasional tasks and only a small number of operations overlap.
Expect less responsiveness when a browser launches while a scheduled job is running, or when several tools perform CPU-heavy parsing at the same time. A single vCPU can still work, but queueing becomes visible sooner and short spikes compete with the agent process.
Two or more vCPUs for overlapping work
Choose 2 vCPUs when you automate a browser, keep multiple profiles or sessions, run dashboards, or schedule jobs that can overlap. This aligns with the operator’s documented 2-CPU limit, but remains a practical recommendation rather than a Hermes minimum.

Additional vCPUs help only when work can run concurrently. They do not compensate for insufficient RAM, slow storage or a local model that needs substantially more memory. For local inference, model architecture and runtime determine CPU demand; size the model first, then choose CPU capacity that meets its throughput target.

RAM: leave headroom for browsers, jobs and the operating system
What 2 GB can cover
Two gigabytes is a reasonable starting point for Hermes on a small Linux VPS when inference is remote and the workload is light. It leaves room for the agent, a minimal operating system and modest persistent state, provided you avoid running many extra services on the same host.
Do not treat all 2 GB as application memory. The kernel, SSH access, monitoring, filesystem cache and temporary processes consume part of it. Configure swap as a safety valve for brief peaks, but do not use swap as a substitute for adequate RAM: sustained swapping makes browser automation and tool calls feel slow and can amplify storage wear.
Why 4 GB is a safer everyday target
Four gigabytes gives browser processes, concurrent sessions and scheduled jobs more room to coexist. It is also the operator’s documented memory limit default (4Gi), and it matches the 4 GB figure in a community installation guide. Both are useful reference points, not a promise that every installation requires 4 GB.
Choose 4 GB if you plan to keep a headless browser active, use several browser contexts, process larger files, run a web dashboard, or leave room for upgrades without stopping services. If the VPS hosts a database, reverse proxy, monitoring stack or other applications, add their working sets before deciding how much RAM Hermes receives.

Storage: capacity and I/O are separate decisions
What belongs on the disk
- Hermes and its Python environment or container layers.
- Browser binaries, profiles, cookies and caches when browser automation is enabled.
- Persistent sessions, skills, task data and configuration.
- Logs, temporary files and downloaded artifacts.
- Backups and at least one spare copy of critical configuration before upgrades.
A 20 GB disk can work for a small hosted-model installation if you monitor usage and avoid retaining large artifacts. It is an entry point, not a promise that 20 GB will remain sufficient indefinitely. Docker layers, browser caches and logs can grow quietly, and a filesystem that reaches 100% usage can prevent updates or even stop services from writing state.
When 40–50 GB is the better choice
Use 40–50 GB when you want less housekeeping, multiple browser profiles, longer log retention, local backups or frequent image updates. Hermes’ official Docker example allocates 51,200 MB (50 GB), which is a useful indication of comfortable room for a persistent container deployment rather than a minimum.
Prefer fast, reliable SSD-backed storage. Browser startup, package installation, container extraction, log writes and database-like state are sensitive to I/O latency even when total capacity is adequate. Check whether a provider’s advertised disk is persistent across reboots and whether snapshots or backups consume additional quota.
Hosted inference versus local models
Hosted model API: no GPU for the basic profile
The 1-vCPU, 2-GB-RAM, 20-GB-disk profile assumes Hermes sends prompts and tool-related requests to a model provider. A VPS guide for this setup states that the model runs through the provider API and that no GPU is needed. Your server still needs reliable outbound networking, credentials and enough CPU, memory and disk for Hermes and its tools.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
API usage can shift the bottleneck away from hardware. Network latency, provider rate limits and model-service availability may dominate response time even when the VPS has spare CPU. Conversely, local browser work can saturate the VPS while the model API is waiting, so monitor both application load and system resources.

Local inference: size for the model and runtime
When a model is downloaded to the VPS, its files consume disk and its runtime consumes RAM. Quantization, context length, concurrent requests and whether layers are offloaded to a GPU all affect the requirement. The community guidance explicitly calls for additional model storage, and independent VPS analysis notes that local models must be sized to the model rather than to Hermes itself.
Do not assume that a VPS sized for hosted inference can run a local model. Before choosing a plan, total the model files, tokenizer and runtime cache, then add operating-system and Hermes headroom. If the runtime expects a GPU, select a GPU-capable host; the no-GPU statement applies only to the simple hosted-model arrangement.
Platform and software prerequisites
The official support matrix places Linux/WSL2 and Docker containers in Tier 1. It lists PyPI and Homebrew installation methods as unsupported, so a production VPS should follow a supported Linux or Docker path rather than relying on an unsupported package workflow.

Pin the interpreter and installer path you actually use, and verify that the operating system’s packages provide the required tools before troubleshooting Hermes itself.
Choosing a VPS profile step by step
- Decide where inference runs. Select the hosted-model profile if requests go to an API. If model files stay on the VPS, inventory their size and runtime requirements first.
- Count concurrent activities. Include scheduled jobs, browser contexts, dashboards, file processing and any other services sharing the machine. One occasional activity favors 1 vCPU; overlapping work favors 2 vCPUs or more.
- Set a RAM floor. Start at 2 GB only for a light, single-user API-backed deployment. Choose 4 GB when browser automation or concurrency is part of normal use. Add the memory budget of databases, proxies and monitoring separately.
- Estimate persistent data. Add Hermes state, browser profiles, logs, artifacts, container layers, local model files and at least one upgrade or backup margin. Round up to the next practical disk tier instead of running close to full.
- Reserve operational headroom. Leave space for swap, temporary files, package caches and rolling updates. A plan that is just large enough on day one can fail during an image pull or browser update.
- Choose a supported deployment path. Use a Tier 1 Linux/WSL2 or Docker arrangement and install the documented prerequisites before launching Hermes.
- Measure after launch. Watch CPU saturation, memory pressure, swap activity, disk utilization, I/O wait and job latency during your busiest realistic period. Resize from observed peaks, not from idle readings.
Browser automation and concurrent sessions
Browser work is often the first reason a minimal VPS feels undersized. A browser can create several processes, keep large caches and consume memory independently of Hermes. Multiple profiles multiply that overhead, while downloads and screenshots increase disk usage.
Best Value
- Use 2 vCPUs and 4 GB RAM as a safer baseline when a browser is active during normal jobs.
- Keep browser profiles and downloaded artifacts on persistent storage, but set retention limits for caches and logs.
- Schedule heavy jobs so they do not all start simultaneously on a small host.
- Measure per-process memory during a real browser workflow; a single successful test does not reveal the peak from concurrent sessions.
If browser tasks remain slow while CPU is low, inspect memory pressure, swap and storage I/O before adding cores. If CPU is continuously saturated with sufficient RAM, move to a larger CPU tier or reduce concurrency.
Signs that it is time to resize
| Symptom | Likely constraint | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Tasks queue whenever two jobs overlap | CPU concurrency | Check sustained CPU usage; move from 1 to 2 vCPUs or stagger schedules. |
| Browser tabs or jobs are killed, or swap stays active | RAM | Inspect peak memory and reduce concurrency; move to 4 GB or more. |
| Updates fail with “no space left” errors | Disk capacity | Remove unneeded caches and logs, then expand storage before the next update. |
| Commands pause while CPU is idle | Storage I/O or swapping | Check I/O wait and swap activity; use faster persistent storage and add RAM if needed. |
| Local-model loading fails | Model memory or disk | Compare model files and runtime needs with available RAM, disk and GPU resources. |
Collect measurements during peak activity rather than immediately after boot. A low average can hide short memory or disk bursts that coincide with browser launches, container updates or scheduled jobs.

Persistent state makes backup space part of the storage decision. Keep configuration, credentials in an appropriate secret-management system, sessions and important task data recoverable before changing the container image or Python environment. Test that a backup can actually be restored; a snapshot that was never restored is not a verified recovery path.
Reserve free disk for downloads and temporary extraction during upgrades. Keep the operating system and Hermes installation on a supported, maintained Linux release, and review the Python version whenever the installer or updater changes. Resource sizing should be revisited after enabling a browser, adding profiles, increasing log retention or moving from hosted to local inference.
A practical recommendation
For a personal Hermes Agent on a Linux VPS using a hosted model API, begin with 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM and 20 GB persistent SSD storage, plus swap and monitoring. Select 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM and 40–50 GB when browser automation, concurrent sessions, dashboards or longer retention are normal. Treat the official Docker values and operator defaults as documented deployment examples, not universal minima. The moment you place a local model on the server, recalculate from that model’s files and runtime—and add GPU capacity if the runtime requires it.
