There is no universal “reimage” sequence for installing Hermes Agent with Open WebUI: the steps depend on your server provider, whether it is a VPS or bare metal, and the operating system image you choose. Confirm those details and preserve anything you need before using your host’s current reinstall controls. After a supported Linux system is ready, a practical documented setup is to run Hermes on the host and Open WebUI in Docker, then connect them over Hermes’ OpenAI-compatible API.
What to confirm before reimaging
Reimaging usually replaces the server’s operating system and may erase its files. The Hermes and Open WebUI installation guides explain how to install and connect the software; they do not document a provider-neutral server reimage procedure. Use your provider’s current OS reinstall instructions rather than applying steps intended for another host.

- Identify the provider and whether the server is a VPS or bare metal. Reinstall controls and recovery procedures differ.
- Choose an operating system and architecture supported by Hermes. Its platform guide lists Linux/WSL2 x86_64 and aarch64, and Docker x86_64 and aarch64, as Tier 1 support: Hermes Agent platform support.
- Verify that you can regain access after reinstalling, including SSH credentials, provider console access, and any recovery method your host requires.
- Back up data and configuration you want to retain. Decide where Hermes’ home and Open WebUI’s persistent data will live, and how each will be backed up.
- If Open WebUI will run in Docker, plan to install Docker Engine and Compose on the rebuilt system.
The official installation and integration pages do not establish universal CPU, RAM, or disk requirements for this arrangement. Check the requirements for your selected model, operating system, and hosting plan instead of treating an unsupported server size as a guarantee.

Choose how to run the two services
The Open WebUI integration guide demonstrates connecting a host-run Hermes gateway to Open WebUI in Docker. That is a straightforward server arrangement when you are comfortable managing a Docker volume for the UI and a host service for Hermes.

For a fully containerized Hermes setup, follow the project’s separate Docker documentation; do not assume the host-install instructions or host-loopback address apply unchanged.
Install Hermes and verify it first
- Install as the account that will own and run Hermes. Hermes documents this Linux install command:

Review the current installer and your provider’s security requirements before piping a remote script to a shell. The command-line installation documentation also covers macOS and WSL2, but this server guide focuses on Linux. - Reload the shell if prompted, then follow the Hermes Agent Quickstart setup flow to select a model provider and model.
- Check the account and data location. The POSIX source install uses
~/.hermes/. The installation guide warns that running the installer as root uses root’s home unless you explicitly select another location. Avoid configuring Hermes under root if the gateway will run as a different user. - Confirm the model’s context window. The Hermes Agent Quickstart says Hermes requires a model with at least 64,000 tokens of context. This is a Hermes requirement, not a general minimum for all language models.
- Send an ordinary chat prompt and confirm a response before adding the API connection. This separates model or provider setup problems from networking problems introduced by the UI integration.
Enable the Hermes API gateway
Hermes must expose its OpenAI-compatible API for Open WebUI to connect. In the Hermes environment file, normally ~/.hermes/.env for the POSIX source install, set:

API_SERVER_ENABLED=true
API_SERVER_KEY=<strong-random-secret>Choose a strong, private key and keep it out of public code or logs. The Open WebUI Hermes Agent integration guide lists the default API host as 127.0.0.1 and port as 8642. Start the gateway with hermes gateway and keep it running; for a persistent deployment, use the server’s service manager and configure it to run as the same account that owns the intended Hermes home.

The defaults bind the service locally. Do not expose the API directly to the public internet as a shortcut: a public deployment needs a deliberate security design, including firewall rules, TLS/reverse-proxy handling, authentication, and access controls beyond this local connection example.

Connect Open WebUI to Hermes
When both applications can reach the same host loopback
- In Open WebUI, open Settings > Admin > Connections > Manage OpenAI API Connections and add a connection.
- Set the URL to
http://localhost:8642/v1when Open WebUI can reach Hermes through that same host’s loopback interface. - Enter the exact value of
API_SERVER_KEYas the API key and save the connection.
When Open WebUI runs in Docker and Hermes runs on the host
Inside a container, localhost normally refers to the container itself, not the host. The Open WebUI Compose example uses http://host.docker.internal:8642/v1 and maps that hostname to the host gateway on Linux. Its relevant configuration follows:

open-webui:Use the same secret as Hermes’ API_SERVER_KEY; replace the example key value with your actual secret rather than leaving a sample value in place. On Linux, host.docker.internal is not available by default in every Docker setup, so retain the documented host-gateway mapping or use another appropriately secured network route. Validate connectivity from the actual Open WebUI container environment.

The Compose example publishes Open WebUI on host port 3000 and maps it to container port 8080. Treat the UI’s exposure separately from Hermes API exposure and restrict access according to your deployment needs.

The named volume at /app/backend/data preserves Open WebUI’s database and settings when its container is recreated. The integration guide notes that the connection environment variables are applied on first launch; later connection changes should be made in the Admin UI. Removing the data volume to force environment values to be reread also removes the stored UI data, so do not do that without a backup and a deliberate reset plan.

Troubleshoot connection failures
No Hermes model appears in Open WebUI
- Confirm the configured base URL ends in
/v1. - Check that
hermes gatewayis running and that the Open WebUI environment can reach the configured host and port. - Use the integration guide’s documented
/healthand/v1/modelsendpoints to check gateway health and model discovery from the relevant network location.
Open WebUI reports an invalid API key
Compare the saved Open WebUI key byte-for-byte with API_SERVER_KEY in ~/.hermes/.env, or the applicable Hermes home if the gateway runs under another account. A key configured for the wrong user’s Hermes directory will not authenticate against the intended gateway.
The container cannot reach the host gateway
Check the Compose extra_hosts mapping on Linux and verify the route from inside the running container. If you choose host networking or a bridge address instead, account for the resulting port reachability and firewall exposure rather than opening the API broadly.
Responses take longer than expected
The Open WebUI integration guide notes that Hermes may make several tool calls before responding. Complex requests can therefore take longer than a simple chat; latency alone does not establish a failed connection.
