What Apple Trade In is (and what it is not)
Apple Trade In is a program where you trade an eligible Apple device for credit toward a new purchase or gift card. It’s not a buyback estimate you can count on no matter what you send; the final outcome depends on the device Apple receives and how it tests.

If your device still has activation protections enabled (like Find My / Activation Lock), the device can’t be safely accepted until those checks are resolved.

How Apple estimates your trade-in value
Your initial offer is generated from device identity and claimed condition. It typically depends on the exact model, storage, cellular capability, and—on many devices—the carrier and whether there are known hardware constraints.
Condition grading: what Apple looks for
Apple’s condition categories usually map to real-world hardware states: screen condition (including cracks), body condition (dents, missing parts), functional status (cameras, microphones, buttons), and battery health where relevant. Even if you pick “Good” online, the inspection can reveal issues that don’t match your selection.
Model, storage, and carrier matter
Two devices that look similar can be valued very differently. Storage capacity and whether the device is Wi‑Fi only vs. cellular can move the estimate substantially. Cellular models can also have carrier-related information tied to eligibility.
Why the estimate can change
When you ship, Apple doesn’t just confirm the serial number. It also re-evaluates condition and functionality. If something doesn’t meet the required standard for the grade you selected, the offer can be adjusted or the device can be declined.
The behind-the-scenes workflow (end-to-end)
Apple’s process is consistent: request → verification → shipping → intake scan → inspection/testing → final decision. You’ll usually see only parts of this, but the flow is designed to prevent mismatches and fraud.
1) Start a trade in request
You submit your device details through the Apple Trade In flow. Depending on your location and the device type, you’ll see either an immediate prepaid label option or a “ship it yourself” approach with specific instructions.
2) Device data and activation checks
Before Apple accepts the trade, they must ensure the device isn’t locked to your Apple ID and can be prepared for reuse or recycling. This typically means Activation Lock must be disabled and Find My must be turned off (or the device must be in a state that passes Apple’s security requirements).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3) Shipping option and label generation
Once the request is accepted, Apple generates shipping instructions. If Apple provides a label, you’ll use it with the exact carrier and tracking details they provide. The label is part of the chain-of-custody so the shipment can be tied to the trade.
4) Receiving scan and chain-of-custody
When the box arrives, Apple typically scans the shipment to link it to your trade-in request. This is where mismatches start to surface: wrong device model, missing serial match, or missing required components can cause delays or a rejection.

5) Inspection, testing, and re-grading
Apple’s technicians or automated inspection processes check the device against the grade you selected. This can include visual assessment for damage, functional testing for key hardware, and verification for things like screen integrity, cameras, and ports.
If they find issues that reduce usability or safety, the trade-in value can be lowered. If issues are severe or the device can’t be properly verified, it may be declined.

6) Payment and finalization
After the inspection is complete, Apple finalizes the credit amount. Payment can be a gift card or credit toward a purchase, depending on the path you choose. If the value changes, you’ll see the revised outcome after verification rather than before shipping.
Prerequisites you must complete before shipping
Most trade-in failures are preventable. The biggest wins come from completing your account/security steps exactly and packaging the device so it arrives in the condition you intend to be graded.
Back up your data
Before erasing anything, back up to iCloud or your computer. Trade in is a one-way process for the device—once erased and shipped, you won’t get your data back.
Sign out of iCloud and accounts
Remove your device from Apple services by signing out of iCloud and other relevant accounts. This prevents Activation Lock problems and reduces the chance the device gets flagged during intake.
Turn off Find My and activation lock
On iPhone and iPad, go to Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone (or Find My iPad) and turn it off. You may need your Apple ID password to confirm.
On a Mac, if you use the same Apple ID services, ensure relevant “Find My” protections are disabled as required for the device being traded. If you don’t, Apple may treat it as locked and refuse acceptance until it’s resolved.
Erase the device correctly
Use the device’s built-in erase function rather than only deleting files. On iPhone and iPad, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.

How to trade in iPhone and iPad (step-by-step)
The flow varies slightly by region and whether you’re buying a new device, but the core steps are stable: choose the device, confirm condition, accept the estimate terms, and ship.
On iPhone or iPad
Use the Apple Trade In entry point in Apple’s official purchase flow or the Apple Trade In page tied to your region. You’ll typically be asked to verify device details and select a condition category.
- Select the device you’re trading (iPhone or iPad) and the correct model details.
- Choose the device condition you believe matches your hardware state (including screen and body condition).
- Confirm the offer terms and proceed to shipping instructions.
- Prepare the device: back up, sign out, disable Find My, and erase.
- Pack the device exactly as instructed and ship using the provided label/tracking.
- Track the shipment and wait for Apple’s inspection decision.
On a computer
Trading from a computer is useful if you need to manage confirmations or you’re verifying iCloud sign-out steps on a larger screen.
- Open the Apple Trade In page or the trade-in step within a purchase workflow.
- Enter the device details accurately (model and storage).
- Select condition and review the estimated credit.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to generate your shipping process.
- Complete security steps on the device, then erase.
- Ship and monitor tracking until Apple completes inspection.
How to trade in Mac and other Apple devices
Mac trades tend to focus more on functional readiness and whether the device can boot and be prepared for resale. Apple’s acceptance criteria still rely on account protection and data removal.
Mac and accessories
Trade eligibility often depends on including required items (depending on the program rules for that specific product). If Apple instructs you to send cables or chargers, follow it; sending extra items usually doesn’t help if the essentials are missing.
- Choose your Mac model and configuration in the Apple Trade In flow.
- Select condition based on screen/display and functional tests you can perform.
- Back up data (Time Machine for macOS) and then sign out of Apple ID services.
- Erase the Mac using the appropriate macOS erase method for your version.
- Package the Mac and ship using Apple’s provided instructions and label.
- Wait for inspection and final credit decision.
Shipping and packaging: what happens if you don’t follow instructions
Packaging isn’t just “nice to have.” Shipping damage can reduce the grade you selected—meaning the inspection can lower the offer even if your device started in good condition.
Packaging rules that protect acceptance
Use the right box size and padding. Keep the original materials if Apple provides a kit. Seal the package securely so it can survive typical carrier handling.
- Use enough cushioning so the device can’t shift.
- Include any items Apple explicitly requires.
- Keep the packing slip/trade-in reference number for your records.
- Do not ship a device with loose parts that can crack screens or damage ports.
Common shipping problems
- Cracked screens after shipping: under-padding or no protection around the display.
- Wrong device in the box: mixing up trade shipments when you have multiple devices.
- Missing required components: sending just the device when the program expects more.
- Label mismatch: using the wrong carrier label or an expired shipping instruction.
What to expect after you ship
Once you ship, the clock shifts from “pre-ship estimate” to “post-intake verification.” Apple will confirm the device and then complete inspection.

Status tracking signals
You’ll usually be able to track progress via shipment tracking and the trade-in status page/email confirmations tied to your request. If tracking shows delivered but your status doesn’t update quickly, it may still be in intake processing.
Re-grade scenarios: accepted at estimate, adjusted, or declined
There are three typical outcomes:
- Accepted at the original estimate: the device matches the condition grade.
- Adjusted credit: Apple found differences (for example, screen micro-damage or battery condition).
- Declined: severe issues, missing required items, or account/security blocks prevent acceptance.
Common reasons Apple lowers the offer or rejects a device
Even careful sellers can miss something. The most common problems come from condition mismatch, account lock issues, and shipping damage.
- Activation Lock / Find My not disabled: the device can’t be processed for resale.
- Screen or body damage not matching your grade: cracks, deep dents, or missing parts.
- Non-functional hardware: cameras, microphones, buttons, Face ID/Touch ID failures where applicable.
- Incorrect device model or storage: selecting the wrong option during the trade request.
- Battery-related issues: for devices where Apple includes battery health criteria in grading.
- Missing accessories required by the program: cables/chargers or other items requested in the instructions.
- Shipping damage: scuffs, cracked displays, or port damage introduced during transit.
Fraud and mismatch safeguards (behind the scenes)
Trade-in workflows are built to stop “serial swap” and “wrong item” scams. Apple’s inspection process ties the device you send to the trade request through verification steps such as serial/model checks and condition matching.
If the serial or identification doesn’t align with the request, Apple can delay the decision or decline the trade. That’s why it’s critical to ship the exact device you entered into the trade form, not a similar-looking alternative.

Troubleshooting: if the trade-in process stalls or fails
If something goes wrong, don’t guess—collect evidence and address the most likely blockers: account lock, device mismatch, shipping label issues, or condition re-grade.
Wrong device listed
If you selected the wrong model/storage during the trade request, Apple may still proceed but the inspection can lead to an adjustment or denial. If you catch it early, correct the trade request while you still have time to resubmit under the correct details.
- Compare the trade request model to the device’s exact model/serial details.
- Check your emails/confirmation page for the device name and configuration.
- If you haven’t shipped yet, follow the correction path available in the trade-in workflow.
Activation lock / Find My still enabled
This is the most common “decline” class issue because a locked device can’t be safely processed. If you disabled Find My but the device still shows lock status, double-check the setting and sign-out on the device itself.
- Reopen Settings > your Apple ID > Find My > turn off Find My iPhone/iPad.
- Confirm you signed out of your Apple ID on the device.
- Erase again using Transfer or Reset / Erase All Content and Settings.
Shipping label or tracking issues
If you can’t find tracking, or the label doesn’t scan, keep proof of shipment and the shipping reference number. Carriers sometimes take time to update scans.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the address and tracking number match your trade request.
- Take screenshots of the shipped confirmation and tracking page.
- Contact support if delivered is confirmed but trade status doesn’t update after a reasonable processing window.
Camera, display, or battery discrepancies
If your device is “fine” but Apple lowers the offer, the inspection likely found damage or a functional failure you didn’t test. Take note of what changed—then check the device for issues like brightness irregularities, touch issues, camera focus errors, or abnormal battery behavior.

If you believe Apple made an error and you can provide strong evidence (photos, repair receipts, testing results), support may review it depending on the program rules in your region.
Alternatives to Apple Trade In
If you want maximum control over price and grading, private sale can outperform trade-in credit—at the cost of time, risk, and effort.
Sell privately (eBay or local)
Platforms like eBay let you set a price and describe condition directly. You’ll handle listing, shipping, and buyer communication, and you’ll usually need to protect yourself against scams.
- Pros: can get more than trade-in credit.
- Cons: more time, more negotiation, higher fraud risk.
Carrier promotions
Some carriers run trade promotions tied to specific iPhone upgrades. These can be attractive if they stack with discounts, but the required device condition and timing can be strict.
Refurbishers
Independent refurbishers may offer competitive buy prices if your device meets their grade standards. The trade-off is that grading methods and data security workflows aren’t always as consistent as Apple’s.
Bottom Line
Apple Trade In works because it combines account security checks, a controlled shipping workflow, and an inspection step that re-grades condition after intake. Your estimate is a starting point—not a guaranteed final number.
If you prepare correctly (Find My off, proper sign-out, correct erase, and solid packaging), you’re far more likely to receive credit at the original value without delays.

How long does Apple Trade In take after I ship?
Timing depends on inspection volume and shipping transit time. Start by checking tracking; the trade status typically updates after intake scan and inspection completion.
Will Apple accept my device if it has cosmetic damage?
Often yes, but it depends on the condition grade and the severity. Cracks, missing parts, or deeper damage can trigger a lower offer or a decline.
What if I forgot to turn off Find My?
That’s a common blocker. Erase alone usually isn’t enough if Activation Lock is still enabled. Disable Find My and sign out properly before shipping, or Apple may refuse acceptance.
Can I trade in a device with a non-working component?
It might be eligible but the offer can drop significantly or be declined if essential functions fail. Test what you can before selecting your condition.
