iOS 18.1 expands Apple Intelligence writing tools on iPhone—so you can edit drafts, clean up messages, and generate clearer text without leaving the app you’re working in. The result is faster writing with fewer back-and-forth revisions.
This guide covers what iOS 18.1’s writing tools can actually do, where you’ll find them, the settings that must be enabled, and the common failure points that make people think a feature is missing.

What iOS 18.1 writing tools are (and where they show up)
In iOS 18.1, Apple Intelligence adds writing-focused controls that help you improve existing text (rewrite, proofread, summarize) and, in some cases, draft new text from prompts. Apple places these controls inside common writing surfaces instead of hiding them in a separate app.
You’ll typically see tool options appear as contextual controls (for example, over selected text) and as “writing” actions tied to system apps like Mail and Notes.

Prerequisites: device, language, and settings you must verify
Apple Intelligence features aren’t universal. Before you assume a writing tool is broken, confirm the basics: device compatibility, Apple Intelligence availability, supported language, and the right toggles in Settings.
Check Apple Intelligence availability
On an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, open Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri. If Apple Intelligence is supported and configured, you’ll see Apple Intelligence options and a status for how it’s being processed (on-device and/or private processing).
Confirm the language for best results
Writing quality depends heavily on the language you select. In Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri, make sure your iPhone language and the Apple Intelligence language are supported for writing tools.
Enable required permissions
- Settings → Privacy & Security → ensure relevant writing-related permissions are allowed (if the system prompts you per app).
- Settings → Siri & Search: Siri-based intelligence features may require Siri search/learn toggles to be enabled.
- Settings → General → Software Update: stay on the latest point release you can (iOS 18.1.x can include model and feature fixes).
Writing Tools you’ll see in iOS 18.1
iOS 18.1 writing tools are designed around three jobs: edit what’s already there, compress it into something readable, and draft from intent. The labels can vary slightly by app, but the capabilities are consistent.
Rewrite
Rewrite changes your selected text while keeping its intent. You can use it to reduce repetition, change phrasing, or adjust clarity when your draft reads awkwardly or ramblingly.
Look for rewrite controls tied to the selected text—especially in Mail, Notes, and wherever Apple Intelligence writing actions appear.
Proofread
Proofread focuses on correctness: grammar, spelling, punctuation, and readability. It’s ideal when you want to keep your meaning but remove small errors before sending.
Use Proofread for “quick confidence” passes on messages, emails, and document notes.
Summarize
Summarize condenses longer text into a shorter version. This is useful for turning meeting notes into action items or shrinking a long message thread into a recap.
When you summarize, double-check named entities (people, dates, products) because the shortened version can sometimes omit context you care about.
Get Suggestions (tone and clarity options)
Many iOS 18.1 writing flows include suggestion-style options for tone and clarity—like making wording more concise or shifting it to sound friendlier or more direct.

Compose with prompts (when available)
Depending on the app surface, you may be able to start a draft from a prompt and then iterate using Rewrite/Proofread. When prompt composition is available, it’s the fastest route from “idea in your head” to “ready-to-send draft.”
If prompt composition isn’t visible in a specific app, rely on Rewrite and Proofread for existing text and use Summarize to extract structure.
Clean up formatting and improve structure
Apple Intelligence writing tools can improve the structure of lists, paragraphs, and multi-part messages. Instead of manual reformatting, you can ask for a cleaner layout and better flow.

Where to use them on iPhone
Writing tools work best when they’re used where the text already lives. Here are the major places you’ll find them.
Mail is one of the most direct wins: draft an email, select the portion you want improved, then use Rewrite or Proofread before you send. Summarize is also useful for extracting key points from long threads.
- Open the email draft or the message you’re responding to.
- Highlight the text you want to improve.
- Tap the writing tool controls that appear for that selection.
- Review the revised text, then insert it back into the draft.
Notes
Notes pairs well with Summarize. Turn raw thoughts into readable summaries and action-focused checklists, then use Rewrite to tighten the language.
- Open Notes and find the note or create a new one.
- Select the text you want to clean up.
- Use Summarize for a condensed version or Rewrite for better phrasing.
- Paste or replace the original content with the improved output.
Messages
Messages writing tools help reduce the “did I sound rude?” problem. Rewrite and Proofread are especially useful after you’ve drafted something quickly.
- Open the conversation in Messages.
- Draft your message (or select the text you already wrote).
- Use Proofread to fix small issues, then Rewrite for tone.
- Send after you confirm the final wording matches your intent.
Safari and web text
When writing tools appear for web content, the workflow is usually: select the relevant passage, summarize it, and keep a clean note. This is great for turning research into a short briefing.
- In Safari, navigate to the page you want.
- Select the text you want to capture.
- Choose Summarize (or Rewrite) if available in the selection menu.
- Copy the result into Notes or an email draft.
System-wide writing surfaces
Some writing actions appear across system UI, especially when you select text. If you don’t see a tool in one app, try the same action in another writing surface—compatibility can differ by app integration.
- Open any app with editable text.
- Select a paragraph, then check the contextual actions.
- Try Rewrite and Proofread first; Summarize availability may be more limited.
Step-by-step: the fastest way to rewrite and proofread text
When you need a good result quickly, follow this pattern: select only the portion you want improved, run Proofread first, then Rewrite if you want tone or style changes.

- Tap Proofread (if shown). Review the corrected version.
- If the text is correct but still doesn’t sound right, run Rewrite.
- Choose the style/tone option that matches your goal (for example, more concise, friendlier, or more formal).
- Replace the original selection with the revised text, then re-read for accuracy.
For best outcomes, don’t select huge walls of text when you only need to fix one paragraph. Smaller selections make it easier to preserve the exact meaning you intended.

Practical workflows (real examples you can copy)
Here are common tasks people actually do, translated into tool-friendly steps.
Turn a messy paragraph into a clear email
Start by drafting your thoughts in plain language. Then select the whole draft and use Rewrite until it reads like a message you’d happily send to a real person.
Finish with Proofread for grammar and punctuation, then scan for factual details like dates and commitments.

Summarize a long note for quick action
Select your meeting notes and run Summarize to create a short briefing. If the summary is too short or loses key context, expand by re-running Summarize on a slightly larger selection.
After summarizing, rewrite the first line into an “action header” (for example, what needs to happen next).
Rewrite for a specific tone (friendly, firm, concise)
Write your message normally, then use Rewrite to shift tone. Your prompt/intent can be as simple as “make it more concise” or “sound more polite but firm,” depending on what tone options appear in your UI.
Always do a quick meaning check. Tone changes can subtly change emphasis even when grammar is perfect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteProofread and tighten before you send
Proofread helps with the “small stuff” that can make you look careless. Once Proofread has fixed errors, use Rewrite to remove repetitive phrases and tighten length.
When you’re in a hurry, do Proofread first—then only rewrite the sentences that still feel off.
Advanced controls and edge cases
Writing tools are powerful, but they can behave differently depending on selection size, content type, and language. These are the situations that cause the most frustration.
Choosing tone/length without losing your meaning
If you ask for “more concise,” check that the output still includes the same obligation or requested outcome. Concision is great, but missing one word can change who owns the next step.
Best practice: keep the core facts (names, dates, deliverables) outside the parts you rewrite, or re-check them after rewriting.

Handling names, addresses, and technical terms
Names and technical terms are where mistakes show up. If your draft includes product names, version numbers, or vendor terms, scan those segments line-by-line after Proofread or Rewrite.
If possible, select smaller chunks that exclude the exact terms you want preserved.
When text is mixed with tables, bullets, or code-like content
Writing tools can try to “improve” formatting. For bullet lists, that’s usually helpful; for code-like snippets or structured text, it can cause unintended edits.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- For bullets: select only the paragraph text, not the entire list.
- For structured text: select smaller segments and re-check spacing and punctuation.
- For code-like blocks: avoid Rewrite unless the tool specifically handles code safely in that app surface.
Working with multiple languages
If you write in Spanglish, bilingual work notes, or mixed-language messages, results may vary. Proofread tends to fix grammar in whatever language dominates the selection.
When tone matters, pick the language you want the final output to be in, then run Rewrite on a selection that matches that target language.

The most common reason writing tools appear missing is that Apple Intelligence isn’t enabled or isn’t available for your device/language. Here’s a practical checklist.
1) Verify Apple Intelligence is enabled
- Go to Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Confirm Apple Intelligence is turned on (and not paused by system prompts).
- Check for configuration prompts that might require your consent.
2) Update to iOS 18.1.x
If you’re on iOS 18.1.0 but a later iOS 18.1.x update exists, update. Writing tool integrations can improve between point releases.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Some apps show fewer writing actions than others. If you don’t see Summarize in one app, try the same selection in Notes or Mail.
4) Restart after toggling settings
After enabling Apple Intelligence options or changing language settings, quit the app and restart your iPhone. Contextual menus can lag behind system settings.
5) Try a smaller selection
If a tool doesn’t respond, you might be selecting too much text or selecting content types the app won’t process. Select just the last 1–3 paragraphs and try again.
Privacy, on-device processing, and what Apple Intelligence actually uses
Apple positions Apple Intelligence as privacy-aware by using on-device processing when possible and applying private processing when needed. Your iPhone should handle much of the work without exposing personal content.

Alternatives if you need more control
Apple’s writing tools are built for convenience and native workflows. If you need deeper control, long-form editing, or consistent formatting, you may want additional options alongside Apple Intelligence.
Use macOS tools for longer drafts
When you draft on a MacBook, you can keep editing longer text with the same Apple Intelligence ecosystem. The benefit is more screen space and a tighter workflow between drafting and proofing.
Manual editing plus templates
For recurring message types (status updates, customer responses, project summaries), templates reduce the amount of rewriting you need. Combine templates with Proofread for a fast “quality pass.”
Third-party writing apps
If you want multi-pass style controls, citation workflows, or specialized editing modes, third-party writing tools can complement Apple’s native features. Just be mindful of privacy expectations when you copy sensitive text.
FAQs about iOS 18.1 writing tools and Apple Intelligence
Do iOS 18.1 writing tools work in every app?
No. Apple Intelligence writing tool availability depends on app integration and the specific editing surface. If a tool doesn’t show up, try Notes or Mail with the same text selection.
Can I undo a rewrite or proofread result?
Usually, yes—because the writing tool output is inserted as editable text. If the result isn’t right, delete it and re-run Proofread or Rewrite with a smaller selection.
Will writing tools change the facts in my message?
They can. Proofread and Rewrite aim to preserve meaning, but they may rephrase or reorder details. Always re-check dates, names, and commitments after the tool runs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy do I only see some tools and not others?
Tool availability can vary by selection size, app surface, language support, and Apple Intelligence configuration. Confirm Apple Intelligence is enabled and then try a smaller selection.
Are my drafts stored or used for training?
Apple describes Apple Intelligence as privacy-aware. For the most accurate answer for your configuration, check the privacy details and in-product descriptions under Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri and any feature-specific screens.
Bottom Line
iOS 18.1’s writing tools make it practical to improve your writing where you already work—Mail, Notes, and Messages—using Rewrite, Proofread, and Summarize style actions. When you pair small, targeted selections with a quick meaning check, the results feel less like “magic” and more like a reliable editing assistant.
If the tools aren’t showing, don’t guess—verify Apple Intelligence is enabled, confirm language support, update to the latest iOS 18.1.x, and retry with a smaller selection. That checklist solves most “missing feature” issues fast.
