Unlike app updates you can force at will, AirPods firmware typically applies during a “good conditions” window—when your AirPods are connected, charged, and near your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Before you start: prerequisites and what you should know
Prerequisites
- One iPhone, iPad, or Mac with the latest available OS version for your device.
- AirPods charged (ideally both earbuds and the charging case).
- Stable Bluetooth connection—keep the AirPods close to the Apple device.
What you should know
- There’s no manual “download” button for AirPods firmware. Updates happen through the normal connection flow.
- Firmware version changes are the confirmation. You’ll verify in Settings after the update completes.
- Updates may roll out gradually, so two people can see different timing even with similar hardware.
How to check your AirPods firmware version
You can confirm whether your AirPods have the new firmware by checking their current version in Apple’s settings. The screen labels differ slightly by iOS/iPadOS/macOS version, but the path is consistent.
On iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Find your AirPods in the device list and tap the i (information) icon.
- Scroll to Version to see the firmware number.
On Mac (macOS)
- Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS).
- Go to Bluetooth.
- Select your AirPods, then open the device details (often via an information icon or Details).
- Look for Version or Firmware Version.
If you’re trying to compare before/after, write down the firmware number you see now. After the update window, re-check and confirm the version changed.

How AirPods firmware updates work (and why timing matters)
AirPods firmware updates are delivered over Bluetooth when conditions are stable. That’s why the same steps can take anywhere from minutes to longer depending on signal strength, pairing state, and whether your device triggers the firmware transfer.

Apple’s update flow generally works best when:
- Your iPhone/iPad is near the AirPods.
- The AirPods are connected (not merely paired).
- The AirPods are in their case and/or charging depending on the model behavior and current battery state.
- Your Apple device is awake and active enough to maintain the Bluetooth session.
Update AirPods firmware on iPhone and iPad
Use this method when you want the simplest, most consistent workflow. The goal is to keep the AirPods connected and allow the firmware transfer to complete.
Step-by-step (recommended)
- Place your AirPods in the charging case.
- Plug the case into power and confirm it’s charging.
- On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth and ensure your AirPods show as connected (or connect them if needed).
- Leave the AirPods near the device for at least 15–30 minutes with Bluetooth enabled.
- Keep the iPhone/iPad unlocked and awake during the window if possible.
- After the waiting period, check Settings > Bluetooth > AirPods > i to confirm the Version number changed.
If you use multiple Apple devices
If your AirPods are also paired to a Mac or another iPhone/iPad, make sure the device you’re using for the update is the one currently connected. Otherwise, the firmware transfer may not trigger on the device you’re watching.
Update AirPods firmware on Mac (macOS)
macOS can also initiate the firmware update flow, especially if your AirPods are frequently used with your MacBook. The key is maintaining a stable Bluetooth connection and allowing enough time.

- Keep the AirPods near the MacBook and leave the Mac awake for 15–30 minutes.
- Re-check the AirPods Version field in the Bluetooth device details to confirm the firmware update applied.
If macOS shows the AirPods as connected but firmware still doesn’t change, the next best move is to try the iPhone method. Apple device pairing behavior can differ across iOS and macOS Bluetooth stacks.

What to do if the update won’t install
It’s common for firmware updates to be delayed. What’s not common is that you can’t nudge the process with the right reset steps and conditions. Work through these in order.
1) Confirm your AirPods are eligible for firmware updates
- Make sure you’re using the actual paired AirPods you care about.
- Check the firmware Version field. If you can’t find it, the device details may not be available until pairing is stable.
2) Improve charging and proximity
- Ensure the charging case has sufficient battery or is plugged in.
- Keep the AirPods (or case with AirPods inside) within a few feet of the Apple device.
- Avoid heavy interference (microwaves, crowded hubs, long distance).
3) Restart Bluetooth and reconnect
- On your iPhone/iPad: toggle Bluetooth off and back on.
- Reconnect to AirPods from the Bluetooth list.
- Wait another 15–30 minutes while the AirPods remain in the supported charging/connect state.
4) Re-pair the AirPods (last resort)
If the firmware never progresses, re-pairing can clear a stuck connection state.
- On iPhone/iPad: Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the i next to your AirPods.
- Choose Forget This Device.
- Put the AirPods in pairing mode and add them again.
After re-pairing, repeat the charging/proximity update window, then verify the Version field again.
5) Update your Apple device OS
AirPods firmware delivery can be sensitive to system components in iOS/iPadOS/macOS. Run system updates so Bluetooth and device frameworks are current, then try the AirPods firmware window again.

Security best practices while you wait
If the vulnerability is newly disclosed, you may worry about exposure. The most practical approach is to reduce risky usage patterns and focus on getting updated.
- Update promptly when available and verify via firmware version.
- Avoid pairing with unknown devices. Only connect AirPods to devices you trust.
- Keep your iPhone/iPad/macOS updated. Security fixes in the host OS matter too.
- Don’t disable protections permanently (for example, don’t change Bluetooth permissions in ways that you can’t audit later).
If your AirPods aren’t updated yet, the risk depends on how the vulnerability works and whether it requires specific conditions. The safest posture is to minimize exposure until your firmware version reflects the update.

- Checking too soon. Firmware delivery can take longer than expected, so you need a patience window.
- Using the wrong connected device when multiple iPhones/iPads/MacBook are paired.
- Letting the case or earbuds run low mid-process.
- Switching audio outputs repeatedly during the update window.
- Forgetting to verify by firmware version rather than assuming an update occurred because audio behavior changed.
FAQ about AirPods firmware updates and vulnerabilities
Will Apple notify me when the AirPods firmware update is ready?
Often there’s no explicit “update complete” notification. The most reliable confirmation is checking the firmware Version in Bluetooth device details after giving the update window time to complete.
Do I need to update my AirPods using the case lid open or closed?
Apple doesn’t provide a single universal rule you can memorize. In practice, successful firmware updates usually happen when the AirPods are connected and charging conditions are stable. If one approach fails, try the opposite state and re-run the 15–30 minute window.

Can I update AirPods without an iPhone or iPad?
macOS can sometimes facilitate firmware updates, especially when the AirPods are already connected to your MacBook. But many users find iPhone/iPad to be more consistent for triggering the update flow.
How long should I wait before I assume the firmware didn’t apply?
If everything is correct—charged case, stable connection, device awake—give it at least 30 minutes before concluding it didn’t take. If the firmware version remains unchanged, try the troubleshooting sequence (reconnect, then re-pair if necessary).
What if my firmware version changes but I still hear connectivity issues?
Firmware updates can fix some bugs but not all. If connectivity remains problematic, check Bluetooth interference, restart Bluetooth, and confirm the AirPods are not stuck on an old pairing profile with another Apple device.
