Heavyweight and lightweight describe different torpedo scales and launch roles—not a simple ranking of power or effectiveness. In U.S. Navy examples, the submarine-launched Mk 48 is designed for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, while the smaller Mk 54 is an anti-submarine weapon launched from surface ships and aircraft. Their different platforms and missions explain the distinction better than weight alone.

Why there are heavyweight and lightweight classes
The categories broadly signal a weapon’s scale and the platforms it is intended to fit. The Mk 48 is carried and launched by submarines. The Mk 54 is small enough for deployment from surface ships and aircraft, including helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft such as the P-8A. That makes the classes useful shorthand for different operational roles, but not a complete description of every capability.

The U.S. Navy describes the Mk 48 as a weapon against submarines and surface ships. It describes the Mk 54 as an anti-submarine weapon, with the Navy’s budget highlights discussing its use in littoral scenarios and shallow-water acoustic and environmental conditions as well as deep-water engagements. Those budget descriptions concern intended capability, not results from a head-to-head test. U.S. Navy budget highlights

How their missions and launch platforms differ
Mk 48: submarine-launched, anti-submarine and anti-surface
The Mk 48 is the U.S. Navy’s heavyweight example. The Royal Australian Navy says the Mk 48 and its ADCAP variant are designed to combat fast, deep-diving nuclear submarines and high-performance surface ships. Its platform is a submarine, and the U.S. Navy identifies the Mk 48 as a primary anti-surface and anti-submarine weapon on attack, ballistic-missile and guided-missile submarines.

Mk 54: ship- and aircraft-launched anti-submarine weapon
The Mk 54 is the lightweight example. U.S. Navy sources describe it as an anti-submarine weapon launched from surface ships and aircraft. The Royal Australian Navy specifies air-dropping it from MH-60R Seahawk helicopters and RAAF P-8A Poseidon aircraft. A weapon delivered from those platforms addresses a different operational need than one launched from a submarine; that does not make either class a universal substitute for the other.
Mass and dimensions: keep variants and sources attached
The cited specifications make the size difference clear, but they are not a perfectly matched engineering comparison. The Royal Australian Navy gives two different Mk 48 masses: 1,545.3 kg (3,411 lb) for Mk 48 and 1,662.75 kg (3,671 lb) for Mk 48 ADCAP. For the Mk 54, the U.S. Navy lists 607 lb, while the Royal Australian Navy lists 276 kg. Each figure belongs to its named source and version context; do not treat the small difference between the two Mk 54 listings as proof of a specific design change.

Dimensions show the same broad scale distinction. The Royal Australian Navy lists the Mk 48 at 5.79 m long. For the Mk 54, the U.S. Navy lists 106.9 in length and 12.75 in diameter, while the Australian page lists 2.72 m and 324 mm. These national fact pages use different units and may reflect different reporting conventions; the measurements should not be merged into a single universal specification.

At a high level, the Australian Navy describes acoustic homing for both torpedoes. Its Mk 48 page says Mk 48 and ADCAP can use active or passive homing, with or without wire guidance, and can perform programmed search, acquisition and attack procedures with multiple re-attacks if a pass misses. Its Mk 54 page describes active or passive/active acoustic homing. Those broad labels do not establish equal seeker performance or equal results in the same conditions.

The U.S. Navy lists liquid-propellant propulsion for the Mk 54. The Australian Navy identifies its Mk 54 propulsion as an Otto II liquid-fuel reciprocating external-combustion system. Differences in how official pages describe a weapon are another reason to retain attribution rather than infer performance from a short specification list.
Versions and specification limits
The Mk 54 has undergone distinct modifications: the U.S. Navy fact file records initial operational capability (IOC) for MOD 0 in 2004 and MOD 1 in 2023. It says MOD 0 combines hardware and software from the Mk 46 and Mk 50 programs with commercial off-the-shelf digital signal processing; MOD 1 upgrades the sonar array assembly and associated electronics. A reference to “the Mk 54” may therefore need a modification number for precision.

Specifications should not be mistaken for guarantees of tactical outcomes. The Australian Mk 48 page lists a range of 8 km and a speed of 52 km/h, but the cited Mk 54 pages do not provide equivalent figures for a like-for-like comparison. They also do not establish a universal winner for range, speed, depth or effectiveness; such values depend on variant and operating context.
