Rohit Prasad, a former senior Amazon executive who led Alexa and Artificial General Intelligence and helped develop Amazon’s Nova models, became CEO of Boston Dynamics on October 7, 2026. The company announced the appointment on October 6. It presents the move as a push to combine advanced AI with its robotics business, which it calls Physical AI. That is the stated plan, not a result the company has already delivered.
What changed and when
Boston Dynamics announced the appointment on October 6, 2026, and Prasad took the CEO role effective October 7, 2026. Reuters independently reported the appointment and identified Prasad as succeeding Robert Playter, who stepped down in February 2026. Reuters also identifies Boston Dynamics as owned by Hyundai Motor Group.

Boston Dynamics said Prasad is expected to join its board, but that remains subject to the company’s approval process. Treat the board seat as expected rather than confirmed.
Who Prasad is
According to the company’s announcement, Prasad spent 12 years at Amazon and helped build Alexa from its early days. Before Amazon, he spent nearly 14 years at Raytheon BBN Technologies, where he led machine-learning research and applications. The table below lists his career as the company describes it.

|---|---|---|
| Nearly 14 years before Amazon | Raytheon BBN Technologies | Led machine-learning research and applications |
| 12 years | Amazon | Senior Vice President and Head Scientist for Alexa and Artificial General Intelligence; led development of Amazon Nova foundation models |
| From October 7, 2026 | Boston Dynamics | Chief Executive Officer |
The Amazon and Raytheon BBN figures and the Nova role come from Boston Dynamics’ announcement. Reuters did not independently verify the year counts. The company also says Alexa is used in hundreds of millions of households worldwide; that is its own broad description, not a precise count.
What Boston Dynamics says the strategy is
The company says the appointment is meant to accelerate its Physical AI strategy by combining robotics expertise with advanced AI and commercializing intelligent machines at scale. Its release names industrial, enterprise, and other real-world settings as the target environments.
In his own words, Prasad said:
“Boston Dynamics is uniquely positioned to advance Physical AI through its world-class robotics expertise. I am honored to join the company at such a pivotal moment for the industry. By bringing together advanced AI and robotics, we can build intelligent systems that create meaningful value in real-world environments, expand the reach of robotics across industries, and shape the next era of Physical AI.”

Jaehoon Chang, Vice Chair of Hyundai Motor Group and Chair of the Board of Directors at Boston Dynamics, described the combination as a foundation of Boston Dynamics’ robotics, Prasad’s experience turning AI into products at global scale, and Hyundai Motor Group’s manufacturing, logistics, and mobility capabilities. These are statements of intent. No independently measured outcome for productivity, safety, or sales has been published in connection with this appointment.
What Boston Dynamics makes
The company’s current lineup has three platforms at different stages. They should be compared by intended use and maturity, not by price or performance, because the company has not published those comparisons.
| Platform | Intended use (company description) | Status (company description) |
|---|---|---|
| Spot | Quadruped robot for industrial inspections and managing facility performance data, keeping people out of harm’s way | Described as an operating product line |
| Stretch | Box-moving robot for logistics and retail customers | Described as an operating product line |
| Atlas | Electric humanoid platform | Currently in development; general commercial availability is not implied |
Why the Alexa background is relevant
The most direct link between Prasad’s career and Boston Dynamics is the problem of getting AI to act in the physical world. Fast Company’s feature on the appointment frames the role as connecting AI that understands requests with machines able to act. This is the magazine’s interpretation, not a confirmed Boston Dynamics product roadmap.

Fast Company quotes Prasad’s 2020 column in the magazine: “It is time to retire the lore that has served as an inspiration for seven decades, and set a new challenge that inspires researchers and practitioners equally.” In a later interview, Prasad used a home-assistant example: if a user says “I feel this is too warm,” the assistant should ask whether they want to turn down the thermostat or lower the temperature, rather than offering an irrelevant answer. Fast Company attributes to Prasad a statement made at MIT Technology Review’s EmTech Digital AI conference: “The only way to make smart assistants really smart is to give it eyes and let it explore the world.”
