HDTV zoom modes change how a picture fits the screen: they may preserve its proportions and leave bars, stretch it, or enlarge it and crop part of the frame. The mode names are not standardized across TVs, so choose by the visible result—not by the label alone.
What do HDTV zoom modes do?
A TV has to map the shape of the incoming picture onto the shape of its screen. When those shapes differ, it can preserve the whole image and leave unused space, alter proportions to fill more of the screen, or enlarge the image until some of it falls outside the screen.

On a 16:9 screen, 4:3 material is narrower and may have vertical bars at the sides. A film wider than 16:9 may have horizontal bars above and below. Those bars can be necessary to show the complete picture at its intended proportions; their presence does not, by itself, mean the TV is set incorrectly.
What do the common mode labels mean?
These are typical behaviors, not guaranteed definitions. Sony’s examples include Normal, Zoom, Wide Zoom and Auto Wide; VIZIO’s legacy SV470XVT1A manual describes Normal, Wide, Panoramic and Zoom differently. The available choices and their behavior can depend on the TV model, input and signal.

Why does my HDTV have black bars?
A widescreen HDTV commonly uses a 16:9 (1.78:1) aspect ratio. A 4:3 picture is narrower, so showing it without distortion leaves space at the sides. A CinemaScope film can be wider than 16:9; showing its complete frame leaves space at the top and bottom. Panasonic uses 2.35:1 as an example of a wider-than-16:9 film and explains that filling the screen by zooming crops its sides. Panasonic’s FAQ explains these bars in its discussion of widescreen TVs.
The direction of the bars—and of any cropping—depends on the proportions of the source and the display. A TV may also receive different formats from different programs, so the picture can legitimately fit differently. Sony notes that picture size depends on signal content. Sony Help Guide.

What is the difference between Zoom and Wide?
Wide may stretch or scale a picture to occupy more screen area, changing its proportions if it stretches the image. Zoom enlarges the picture, usually removing bars by cropping some of the frame. The precise behavior depends on the TV and source: “Wide,” “Full” and “Zoom” are menu labels, not universal technical standards.

If the picture looks proportionate but part of it is missing, a zoom or overscan-like enlargement may be cropping it. A mode such as Wide Zoom or Panoramic can compromise between the two by treating the center and edges differently, but the result may still look distorted near the sides.

How to choose a mode without losing or distorting the picture
- Start with Normal or Original. If proportions look right and the whole frame is visible, bars are usually preferable to distortion or lost picture area.
- Try a fill mode only if you prefer a larger picture. Watch for widened faces, stretched circles, or other shapes that no longer look natural.
- Inspect every edge after selecting Zoom. Check for cropped subtitles, scores, captions or other details, not just whether the bars disappeared.
- If sizing changes by program or input, check automatic sizing. On Sony TVs, Auto Wide can change the mode; consult the model’s guide for its menu path and behavior.
- Check the connected box as well as the TV. A cable or satellite receiver may have its own display or aspect-ratio setting. Sony advises checking the box manufacturer’s instructions, too. Sony Help Guide.
Why is part of the picture cut off?
Zooming can enlarge an image beyond the screen boundaries, and the crop may remove content from the top and bottom or from the sides. A wider-than-16:9 film zoomed to fill a 16:9 screen loses some of its side picture. If the image is cut off, switch to Normal or Original first; then consult the TV’s model-specific instructions for the available screen-size options. If a box is connected, check its sizing setting as well.
Why do the same labels behave differently on different TVs?
Manufacturers use their own names and implementations. Sony describes Normal, Zoom, Wide Zoom and Auto Wide in its Help Guide. VIZIO’s 2008-06-02 SV470XVT1A manual describes Normal, Wide, Panoramic and Zoom; it is a legacy model guide, not a description of current VIZIO menus. The examples show why a label alone cannot tell you exactly how a given set will scale or crop a particular input. Check the manual for your TV and the settings for the connected source.
