HDR vs. SDR Explained: Why the Signal Matters as Much as Brightness

HDR is not just brighter SDR. Transfer functions, color representation, metadata, and display mapping all affect how an image is rendered.

HDR is not simply SDR with the brightness turned up. The two describe ways of encoding and displaying image data: a transfer function gives signal values meaning as light, colorimetry describes color representation, and a display interprets the signal and maps it to its own capabilities. Metadata can also guide that rendering, but it is only one part of the picture.

What actually differs between HDR and SDR?

A video signal contains numeric values. Those values do not specify a unique amount of displayed light on their own: the display needs to interpret them using a transfer function. ITU-R Report BT.2408-7 uses BT.1886 as the SDR reference electro-optical transfer function (EOTF) in its mapping guidance, and discusses conversion into the HDR transfer functions PQ and HLG. That interpretation is separate from color representation and from metadata. A format can identify color primaries or a color space, specify how code values relate to light, and carry metadata describing the mastering display. The playback display then makes rendering decisions, including how to fit the signal to its own luminance range. Calling a file or screen “HDR” does not, by itself, tell you all of those details.

What do PQ, HLG, color space, and metadata mean?

Term or format What it describes Documented example
BT.1886 Reference SDR display-light behavior, described by an EOTF. Used as the SDR reference EOTF in ITU-R BT.2408-7’s mapping guidance. ITU-R
PQ An HDR transfer function: it defines signal-to-light behavior. AWS’s format table lists HDR10 with PQ, Rec. 2020, and SMPTE ST 2086 display metadata. AWS Elemental Live format table
HLG A different HDR transfer function and signal approach. AWS lists HLG with Rec. 2020 and no display metadata in its table. Apple describes HLG as scene-referred, with an OOTF based on peak display brightness and ambient lighting. AWS format table; Apple Developer Documentation
Color space or primaries How colors are represented, not how signal values map to light. AWS lists Rec. 2020 for both HDR10 and HLG. That listing does not mean every source uses the full gamut. AWS format table
Display metadata Additional information that can help describe mastering or guide display rendering; it is not the transfer function itself. AWS lists SMPTE ST 2086 for HDR10 and no display metadata for HLG in its table. Those entries should not be generalized to every codec, delivery system, or optional format extension. AWS format table

These distinctions matter because two HDR formats can share a color space but use different transfer functions and metadata conventions. Metadata is not a synonym for HDR, and its presence does not remove the need for a display to interpret and render the signal.

Why does the display affect the result?

A display has finite luminance and dynamic range. When HDR content exceeds what the screen can reproduce, the rendering system must map the signal to the screen’s capabilities. ITU-R guidance addresses adaptation to the display’s peak luminance and calls for display mapping when the screen has lower dynamic range than the HDR content. The resulting image therefore depends not just on encoded values and format signaling, but also on display behavior and viewing conditions.

ITU-R’s examples illustrate why reference figures need context. In one SDR-to-PQ conversion workflow, the report uses 100 cd/m² as SDR screen white and maps nominal SDR peak white to about 203 cd/m², or 58% PQ. These are figures for that described workflow, not universal SDR limits, HDR ceilings, or consumer-TV targets. The report also refers to a 5 cd/m² surround as the BT.2100 surround condition in its discussion of adaptation; that is contextual guidance, not a general room-light prescription. HLG makes the role of viewing conditions especially clear: Apple describes its OOTF as being based on peak display brightness and ambient lighting. A display’s rendering is therefore part of how the signal becomes a viewed image, not a fixed property implied by the HDR label. Apple Developer Documentation

What can go wrong when a signal is interpreted incorrectly?

A transfer-function or format mismatch can produce an image that looks wrong even if the display’s brightness control is increased. ITU-R warns that BT.2100 PQ shown on a monitor expecting BT.709 can appear dim and washed out, with desaturated colors and hue shifts. That is an interpretation problem: the monitor is not rendering the encoded signal according to the intended HDR system. ITU-R Report BT.2408-7 (2023)

Brightness adjustment alone cannot make an SDR interpretation equivalent to correct HDR decoding. The transfer function, color representation, format signaling, and display mapping must work together.

Does converting SDR to HDR create more image information?

Conversion changes how existing material is represented and mapped; it should not be treated as a universal way to recover highlights or color detail that were never captured in the source. The result depends on the conversion method and its goal. ITU-R says the choice depends on the application and documented goals of the method, and states: “Currently, there is no universal approach.” The statement concerns mapping SDR content into HDR. How to think about an HDR-versus-SDR comparison

  • Transfer function: Ask whether the signal uses the SDR reference behavior BT.1886 or an HDR approach such as PQ or HLG.
  • Color representation: Check the specified color space or primaries separately; a wider representation does not establish that the source uses the entire gamut.
  • Metadata: Check what the format actually specifies. For example, AWS’s table lists SMPTE ST 2086 for HDR10 and no display metadata for HLG; this is not a claim about every HDR implementation.
  • Display mapping: Consider the screen’s peak luminance and dynamic range, plus the rendering choices used to adapt the content.
  • Conversion goal: Identify what the conversion is trying to preserve or match rather than assuming there is one correct SDR-to-HDR transformation.

So the useful question is not only “How bright is HDR?” It is “What do these encoded values mean, what additional format information is present, and how will this display interpret and map them?”
