Then check YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics and verify playback on an HDR-capable device. A setting labelled “HDR” cannot turn an SDR source into genuine HDR, and a strong picture pipeline will not prevent buffering if the upload connection or encoder cannot keep up.

What you need for HDR live streaming
YouTube’s guidance is clear: “You need to produce compatible HDR content and use a compatible encoder.” The entire chain matters. The camera or game must produce HDR; the encoder must preserve and signal it correctly; and YouTube must receive a stable stream.
- HDR source: For camera video, confirm in the camera manual that it can record or output HDR in PQ or HLG. For gameplay, confirm that the game is outputting HDR through a supported display and capture path.
- Compatible encoding: YouTube Live HDR uses HEVC/H.265 and 10-bit video. An SDR source with an HDR option switched on is still not genuine HDR.
- Correct color signaling: Transfer function, color primaries, matrix and range must reflect the source. Incorrect signaling can make the picture look washed out, too dark or otherwise unlike the source.
- Sustainable delivery: Your upload connection and encoder must continuously deliver the chosen resolution, frame rate and bitrate. This affects smooth delivery, not whether the source is HDR.
- HDR playback: Viewers need a compatible device to see HDR. YouTube says unsupported devices receive SDR instead.
YouTube’s HDR guidance also notes that the Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors, so that preview alone is not a reliable way to judge the final HDR appearance.

How to configure an HDR stream on YouTube Live
- Confirm the source. Check the camera manual for PQ or HLG HDR output, or confirm that the game and capture chain are actually producing HDR. Do not rely on a generic “HDR” toggle as proof.
- Choose an encoder and protocol the workflow supports. YouTube recommends RTMPS generally and recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR. If your encoder cannot send HDR using that route, YouTube lists HLS as an option. Its OBS instructions describe an RTMP workflow and specify OBS version 30.1 or later for that workflow.
- Set the video codec and bit depth. For YouTube HDR, use HEVC/H.265 and 10-bit video. YouTube’s OBS instructions specify a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10, and P010 (4:2:0).
- Match color settings to the source. YouTube’s OBS instructions specify Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG and recommend HLG. Preserve the source’s actual transfer function and range rather than selecting a different option just because it sounds preferable.
- Set bitrate, rate control and keyframes. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the codec, resolution and frame rate, use CBR, and set a 2-second keyframe frequency; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Test the available upload capacity before going live.
- Start the stream and inspect health. Use YouTube’s health diagnostics to identify issues such as low bitrate or a frame-rate mismatch. If the incoming stream is starved, viewers may buffer even when the HDR color configuration is correct.
- Verify the result on an HDR-capable device. Open the viewer’s quality menu and look for the HDR label. Check an SDR fallback separately: viewers on unsupported devices receive SDR, not HDR.
YouTube Live bitrate guidance by codec
The figures below are YouTube’s published recommendations as accessed October 3, 2026; the help page did not expose a publication date. “Minimum” and “recommended” are YouTube guidance, not universal quality thresholds. Choose a setting your connection can sustain, and run an upload speed test rather than assuming a nominal internet plan speed is available to the encoder.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 minimum | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These recommendations are codec-specific: the H.264 recommendations are higher than the AV1 or H.265 figures in each listed row. For HDR, YouTube’s specified live codec is HEVC/H.265, so use the corresponding H.265 guidance when planning a YouTube HDR stream. If the connection cannot consistently sustain the chosen bitrate, reduce the target resolution or frame rate, or improve the network before increasing quality settings.

Color format and HLS requirements
YouTube’s HLS specification gives additional delivery requirements for HDR. HLS segments are 1–4 seconds, media must be muxed in M2TS, the video must use H.264 or HEVC, and the GOP must be closed. For HDR, the specification requires HEVC, 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, PQ or HLG transfer, Rec. 2020 primaries, and a Rec. 2020 non-constant-luminance matrix. These are YouTube HLS requirements; they should not be assumed to describe every platform or protocol.
In the OBS settings described by YouTube for its RTMP workflow, the named options are Main 10, P010 (4:2:0), and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG, with HLG recommended. Match settings to the actual output and the encoder’s capabilities. An incorrect transfer function or color-space signal can produce a washed-out or otherwise inaccurate image even when the source itself is HDR.

Why an HDR stream may look washed out or fail to look HDR
The source is SDR
An HDR label or encoder setting cannot restore highlight and color information that the source never captured. Confirm the camera’s HDR mode and output format in its manual, or check the game’s HDR output and the supported capture path.
The transfer function or color metadata does not match
HDR depends on correct signaling as well as 10-bit video. Check that PQ or HLG, primaries, matrix and range match the source and the intended YouTube workflow. Do not force Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG onto a source that does not use it.

The viewer is seeing SDR playback
YouTube says compatible devices display HDR automatically; unsupported devices receive SDR. Verify on a known HDR-capable playback device and inspect its quality menu for the HDR badge. The Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors.
The stream is soft, stuttering or buffering
These symptoms do not by themselves indicate an HDR problem. Check YouTube’s stream-health status for low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, GOP or ingestion-starvation issues, then address the reported encoder, input or upload problem. Test the upload connection and lower the target if it cannot sustain the selected settings.

How to distinguish picture quality from delivery reliability
HDR quality is determined by the source, encoding and color handling. Smooth playback depends on whether the encoder and network can deliver the stream consistently. Diagnose these separately: a correct HDR signal can still buffer, while a stable stream can be SDR or have incorrect HDR signaling.
When choosing equipment or settings, compare source and encoder support for PQ/HLG and HEVC Main 10, the target resolution and frame rate, sustainable upload bitrate, available RTMP(S) or HLS support, latency needs, and whether the intended viewers have HDR-capable displays. YouTube says 4K/2160 streams are optimized for quality at normal latency; low-latency optimization is unavailable at that resolution.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs prerecorded videos to stay live around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera, so it is not a replacement for a live camera HDR capture-and-encoding setup. StreamNeo sends uploaded video as made, with one flat price per slot up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers. Nothing has to stay on at home, it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
